Developing A User-Process Model For Designing Menu-Based Interfaces: An Exploratory Study, Boryung Ju, Myke Gluck

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to organize menu items based on a user-process model and implement a new version of current software for enhancing usability of interfaces. Dervin & Nilan's time-line method is used to develop a user-process model for user interface design. We developed a user process model drawn from actual users' understanding of their goals and strategies to solve their information needs by using Dervin's Sense-Making Theory with sense-making interviews. Six experienced subjects were recruited for the sense-making interviews. Each subject went through a learning/exploration session, and was asked to recall and describe specific information needs throughout …

Where's The Beef? Dissecting Spam's Purported Harms, Eric Goldman Jan 2003

Where's The Beef? Dissecting Spam's Purported Harms, Eric Goldman

Faculty Publications

Virtually everyone seems to agree that spam causes tremendous harm, but there is surprisingly little consensus on exactly what those harms are. This Essay examines various harms that spam purportedly causes to assess if the harm is real and if spam is treated dichotomously compared to other media communications. Based on this analysis, the Essay concludes that many harms purportedly caused by spam are not appropriate policy justifications for regulation.

Reflections On The Myth Of Icarus In The Age Of Information, Allen S. Hammond Iv

Faculty Publications

It is economics, policy, law, and indeed, for some, religion that advanced information technology should be eventually accessible to the masses. To this end, the federal and state governments are establishing goals and guidelines for advanced information technology's equitable deployment. Chief among the governments' intended beneficiaries are our children, Generations X,Y, Z, and beyond. The explicit expectation, however, is that every individual and group in our society would benefit from such deployment.

Efficiencies in the computer augmented generation, embedded in the processing and storing of information are expected to enhance education, commerce, the economy, political discourse, individual self actualization, and …

Snow-Patch Influence On Soil Biogeochemical Processes And Invertebrate Distribution In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Michael N. Gooseff, J. E. Barrett, Peter T. Doran, Andrew G. Fountain, W. Berry Lyons, Andrew N. Parsons, Dorota L. Porazinska, Ross A. Virginia, Diana H. Wall

Faculty Publications

The McMurdo Dry Valleys is the largest of the ice-free areas in Antarctica. Precipitation events in excess of 1 cm of snow accumulation are rare. During the winter, snow is transported by strong katabatic winds blowing from the polar plateau, and deposited into the lee of topographic features (e.g., stream channels and other topographic depressions). At the start of the austral summer (early October), as much as 10% of the valley soils may be covered by distributed snow patches. Because liquid water is the primary driver of biological, physical, and chemical processes in this polar desert, quantifying fluxes of water …

The Physiography class invited me to their Comet Party. We all got up at 3 o'clock a.m. and went to the academy building and there watched Halley's comet and indulged in outdoor games, wrote H. Oswald Christensen, a devoted faculty member of the Oneida Stake Academy in Preston, Idaho. His voice, along with those of many other Academy faculty members and students, must not be forgotten.

Who Controls The Water? Yahweh Vs. Baal, Fred E. Woods Jan 2003

Who Controls The Water? Yahweh Vs. Baal, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

As the Israelites settled in the land of Canaan, clashes over religious beliefs and practices developed with other inhabitants of the land. Baalism, the belief in the Canaanite god of water and storm, became a threat to the true belief in Yahweh (Jehovah). This paper is an investigation of the implicit polemical usage of water and storm language in the Deuteronomic History (hereafter referred to as DH). The DH consists of the book of Deuteronomy as well as what is referred to in the Hebrew Bible as the Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings). Many passages in the Deuteronomic …

Phylogeny Of Acridocarpus-Brachylophon (Malpighiaceae): Implications For Tertiary Tropical Floras And Afroasian Biogeography, Charles C. Davis, Charles D. Bell, Peter W. Fritsch, Sarah Mathews Dec 2002

Phylogeny Of Acridocarpus-Brachylophon (Malpighiaceae): Implications For Tertiary Tropical Floras And Afroasian Biogeography, Charles C. Davis, Charles D. Bell, Peter W. Fritsch, Sarah Mathews

Faculty Publications

A major tenet of African Tertiary biogeography posits that lowland rainforest dominated much of Africa in the late Cretaceous and was replaced by xeric vegetation as a response to continental uplift and consequent widespread aridification beginning in the late Paleogene. The aridification of Africa is thought to have been a major factor in the extinction of many African humid-tropical lineages, and in the present-day disparity of species diversity between Africa and other tropical regions. This primarily geologically based model can be tested with independent phylogenetic evidence from widespread African plant groups containing both humid- and xeric-adapted species. We estimated the …

Interrelationships Among Landscapes, Ndvi, And Stream Water Quality In The Us Central Plains, Jerry A. Griffith, Edward A. Martinko, Jerry L. Whistler, Kevin P. Price

Faculty Publications

During late spring through summer of 1994 and 1995, 290 randomly selected stream sites in Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri were sampled once for several parameters including conductivity, turbidity, total phosphorus, nitrate-nitrite nitrogen, the index of biotic integrity, and a habitat index. Based on landscape data from watersheds that were delineated for each sampling location, interrelationships were examined between these water quality parameters and land use/land cover, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and vegetation phenological metrics derived from the NDVI. Statistically significant relationships were found between NDVI values and the derived metrics with the stream condition parameters (r values to …

Analysis Of Vesicular Basalts And Lava Emplacement Processes For Application As A Paleobarometer/Paleoaltimeter, Dork L. Sahagian, Alexander A. Prusevich, William D. Carlson Nov 2002

Analysis Of Vesicular Basalts And Lava Emplacement Processes For Application As A Paleobarometer/Paleoaltimeter, Dork L. Sahagian, Alexander A. Prusevich, William D. Carlson

Faculty Publications

We have developed a method for determining paleoelevations of highland areas on the basis of the vesicularity of lava flows. Vesicular lavas preserve a record of paleopressure at the time and place of emplacement because the difference in internal pressure in bubbles at the base and top of a lava flow depends on atmospheric pressure and lava flow thickness. At the top of the flow, the pressure is simply atmospheric pressure, while at the base, there is an additional contribution of hydrostatic lava overburden. Thus the modal size of the vesicle (bubble) population is larger at the top than at …

Unwarranted Variations In The Quality Of Health Care: Can The Law Help Medicine Provide A Remedy/Remedies?, Philip G. Peters Jr., John E. Wennberg M.D.

Faculty Publications

This article reviews the essential findings of studies of variations in quality of care according to three categories of care: effective care, preference-sensitive care, and supply-sensitive care. It argues that malpractice liability and informed consent laws should be based on standards of practice that are appropriate to each category of care. In the case of effective care, the legal standard should be that virtually all of those in need should receive the treatment, whether or not it is currently customary to provide it. In the case of preference-sensitive care, the law should recognize the failure of the doctrine of informed …

Haplotype-based methods offer a powerful approach to disease gene mapping, based on the association between causal mutations and the ancestral haplotypes on which they arose. As part of The SNP Consortium Allele Frequency Projects, we characterized haplotype patterns across 51 autosomal regions (spanning 13 megabases of the human genome) in samples from Africa, Europe, and Asia. We show that the human genome can be parsed objectively into haplotype blocks; sizable regions over which there is little evidence for historical recombination and within which only a few common haplotypes are observed. The boundaries of blocks and specific haplotypes they contain are …

Faculty Publications

We synthesized key findings from the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, the world's largest and longest-running experimental study of habitat fragmentation. Although initially designed to assess the influence of fragment area on Amazonian biotas, the project has yielded insights that go far beyond the original scope of the study. Results suggest that edge effects play a key role in fragment dynamics, that the matrix has a major influence on fragment connectivity and functioning, and that many Amazonian species avoid even small (<100-m-wide) clearings. The effects of fragmentation are highly eclectic, altering species richness and abundances, species invasions, forest dynamics, the trophic structure of communities, and a variety of ecological and ecosystem processes. Moreover, forest fragmentation appears to interact synergistically with ecological changes such as hunting, fires, and logging, collectively posing an even greater threat to the rainforest biota.

"Do You Have Any Books On..." An Examination Of Public Library Holdings, Cynthia Bassett, John M. Budd

Faculty Publications

Public librarians have long debated the question of whether quality or popularity should drive collection decisions. A survey of the selected holdings of twenty medium-sized public libraries indicates that both quality and popularity may be determining factors in whether to acquire particular titles. Furthermore, the study suggests that the existence and content of reviews may also influence the likelihood of libraries to select particular titles, as may the selectors' perception of the diversity of their community.

Widespread Decline In Hydrological Monitoring Threatens Pan‐Arctic Research, Alexander I. Shiklomanov, Richard B. Lammers, Charles J. Vorosmarty

Faculty Publications

Operational river discharge monitoring is declining in both North America and Eurasia. This problem is especially severe in the Far East of Siberia and the province of Ontario, where 73% and 67% of river gauges were closed between 1986 and 1999, respectively. These reductions will greatly affect our ability to study variations in and alterations to the pan‐Arctic hydrological cycle.

As for the proposal this Article seeks to promote, the length and complexity of this undertaking hopefully demonstrates the difficulty in arriving at an easily identified solution. Century long colonial struggles by several distinct countries and millions of their inhabitants are not easily resolved. Nevertheless, there are certain procedural steps that can be undertaken which may promote the realization of self-determination. The United States should be true to its rhetoric and promote democratic efforts in these lands to achieve autonomy. It is not enough to promote self-determination for other powers' colonies. The subordination of citizens and nationals is not only …

Insurance, Terrorism, And 9/11: Reflections On Three Threshold Questions, Robert H. Jerry Ii

Faculty Publications

For most of us, the collapse of the World Trade Center towers exists at the outermost edge of human comprehension. Even after one visits Ground Zero, the events of 9/11 retain a surreal quality, invoking feelings beyond words as one tries to contemplate losses immeasurable with numbers. Indeed, the insurance losses are insignificant when compared to the human tragedies caused by the terrorist attacks-and in insurance terms, we witnessed the most costly, complex events to transpire in a single day in the history of the planet. Many years will pass before all the insurance ramifications of 9/11 are sorted out.
