Lamb-Mössbauer Factor Of Sodium Ferrocyanide, Daniel L. Decker, L. E. Lortz Feb 1971

Lamb-Mössbauer Factor Of Sodium Ferrocyanide, Daniel L. Decker, L. E. Lortz

Faculty Publications

Using a set of commercially prepared sodium ferrocyanide absorbers enriched to 91.2% Fe57 the Lamb-Mössbauer factor was measured to be 0.28±0.03. The thickness of Fe57 for these absorbers was measured using x-ray absorption techniques and was found to be considerably smaller than that advertised by the manufacturer even after correcting for the size of the ferrocyanide particles in the absorbers.

Transition To A Steady State Of Repeated Acquisition, Donald M. Thompson Jan 1971

Transition To A Steady State Of Repeated Acquisition, Donald M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

Pigeons obtained food reinforcement via a four-response chain that require pecking different keys in the presence of different colors. The sequence of correct key positions changed from session to session. Errors gradually decreased across sessions until a constant minimum range of variability in error levels was reached (steady state). Other characteristics of the transition and steady state of repeated acquisition (e.g., within-session rate of error reduction) were described. © 1971, Psychonomic Journals, Inc.. Two-, Three-, And Four-Particle Spatial Correlations Among Tertiary Cosmic Ray Muons, David D. Busath, R O. Stevenson Jan 1971

Two-, Three-, And Four-Particle Spatial Correlations Among Tertiary Cosmic Ray Muons, David D. Busath, R O. Stevenson

Faculty Publications

Showers of muons which result from interactions of primary cosmic rays high in the atmosphere appear deep underground as bundles of nearly parallel muons. For threshold energies of 1 TeV and arrival zenith angles of 45 degrees, those events having a small mean number of muons are described by a power law distribution in shower size having an exponent of ≅ -3.7 and a radial density distribution that decreases with distance R from the shower axis a little less rapidly than exp(-R/5.4 m). Comparison of new data on four muon spatial correlations in terms of the same phenomenology with data …

Asymptotic Evaluation Of Wkb Matrix Elements. Ii. Use Of Langer's Uniform Asymptotic Wavefunctions, Wesley D. Smith, Russell T. Pack Feb 1970

Asymptotic Evaluation Of Wkb Matrix Elements. Ii. Use Of Langer's Uniform Asymptotic Wavefunctions, Wesley D. Smith, Russell T. Pack

Faculty Publications

An improvement in a previous procedure for the analytic asymptotic evaluation of integrals arising in the quantum-mechanical theory of inelastic molecular collisions is presented. The integrals are evaluated using Langer's uniform asymptotic wavefunctions and the higher-order saddle-point or steepest-descents method. It is found that the Langer functions give no better results than WKB functions, but the higher-order steepest-descents corrections produce a marked improvement. The result is a simple method for evaluating a large class of integrals with an error of 0.1%-2.1%.

Transferring North Carolina Real Estate Part Ii--Roles, Ethics, And Reform, Dale A. Whitman Jan 1970

Transferring North Carolina Real Estate Part Ii--Roles, Ethics, And Reform, Dale A. Whitman

Faculty Publications

As we have seen in Part I of this article, prevailing practices in the transfer of North Carolina real estate are seriously deficient in their substantive protection of the buyer. Part II will explore whether these practices also violate the norms of professional conduct and will conclude with some proposals which should ameliorate both the substantive and ethical deficiencies which face the real estate buyer. Before doing so, however, it seems appropriate to discuss in some detail the roles of various actors in the typical transaction and the types of persons who fill those roles.

Repeated Acquisition As A Behavioral Baseline, Donald M. Thompson Jan 1970

Repeated Acquisition As A Behavioral Baseline, Donald M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

The Boren (1963) technique for studying variables affecting acquisition with an individual-S design was modified and used with pigeons. The sensitivity and reversibility of the steady-state baseline were demonstrated by temporarily removing the different Stimuli correlated with the different members of the chain. This “tandem” probe produced a substantial increase in the number of learning errors. © 1970, Psychonomic Journals, Inc.. All rights reserved.
