Nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) have emerged from recent advances within tissue engineering as a promising alternative to autografts for peripheral nerve repair. NGCs are tubular structures with engineered biomaterials, which guide axonal regeneration from the injured proximal nerve to the distal stump. NGC design can synergistically combine multiple properties to enhance proliferation of stem and neuronal cells, improve nerve migration, attenuate inflammation and reduce scar tissue formation. The aim of most laboratories fabricating NGCs is the development of an automated process that incorporates patient-specific features and complex tissue blueprints (e.g. neurovascular conduit) that serve as the basis for more complicated …

Avoided Quantum Criticality In Exact Numerical Simulations Of A Single Disordered Weyl Cone, Justin H. Wilson, David A. Huse, S. Das Sarma, J. H. Pixley

Faculty Publications

Existing theoretical works differ on whether three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl semimetals are stable to a short-range-correlated random potential. Numerical evidence suggests the semimetal to be unstable, while some field-theoretic instanton calculations have found it to be stable. The differences go beyond method: the continuum field-theoretic works use a single, perfectly linear Weyl cone, while numerical works use tight-binding lattice models which inherently have band curvature and multiple Weyl cones. In this work, we bridge this gap by performing exact numerics on the same model used in analytic treatments, and we find that all phenomena associated with rare regions near the …

On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients. If GW190521 is from a quasicircular binary inspiral, then the detected signal is consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses of 85-14+21 Mm and 66-18+17 Mm (90% credible intervals). We infer that the primary black hole mass lies within the gap produced by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova processes, with only a 0.32% probability of …

We perform an unmodeled search for persistent, directional gravitational wave (GW) sources using data from the first and second observing runs of Advanced LIGO. We do not find evidence for any GW signals. We place limits on the broadband GW flux emitted at 25 Hz from point sources with a power law spectrum at Fα,Θ<(0.05–25)×10−8  erg cm−2 s−1 Hz−1 and the (normalized) energy density spectrum in GWs at 25 Hz from extended sources at Ωα(Θ)<(0.19–2.89)×10−8  sr−1 where α is the spectral index of the energy density spectrum. These represent improvements of …

Abstract-The paper presents N-element switchable beam antennas (BAs) system design for Wireless Sensor Node (WSN), in which the operation of the BAs was characterized by semi-Markov Decision Process (SMDP) with variable sojourn time. A matrix-based switching methodology was introduced for selecting an operational BA, based on the received signal power by each BA. Optimal analysis was carried-out to obtain optimal results in terms of the maximum total of sum of discounted reward in current states. Also developed in the study is the methodology for switching a BA from non-operational to operational state and vice-versa. The effectiveness of this switchable BAs …

Evaluating The Potential Of Drone Swarms In Nonverbal Hri Communication, Kasper Grispino, Damian Lyons, Truong-Huy Nguyen Sep 2020

Evaluating The Potential Of Drone Swarms In Nonverbal Hri Communication, Kasper Grispino, Damian Lyons, Truong-Huy Nguyen

Faculty Publications

Human-to-human communications are enriched with affects and emotions, conveyed, and perceived through both verbal and nonverbal communication. It is our thesis that drone swarms can be used to communicate information enriched with effects via nonverbal channels: guiding, generally interacting with, or warning a human audience via their pattern of motions or behavior. And furthermore that this approach has unique advantages such as flexibility and mobility over other forms of user interface. In this paper, we present a user study to understand how human participants perceived and interpreted swarm behaviors of micro-drone Crazyflie quadcopters flying three different flight formations to bridge …

Creating Collaborative Subject Guides For Multi-Insitutional Digital Collection: A Case Study From The Louisiana Digital Library, Sl Ziegler, Leah Powell

Faculty Publications

This case study focuses on the development of subject guides for the Louisiana Digital Library (LDL), a state-wide digital repository for digital cultural heritage. While subject guides are always important for navigating large collections, during the state-wide shutdown of libraries due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for the guides was greater than ever. In keeping with the LDL’s multi-institutional and collaborative nature, representatives from seven Louisiana-based institutions responded to an open call to form a rapid-response working group. Within three weeks, ten guides were developed and published. Equally important, an iterative workflow for building and updating guides was established …

A Metacognitive Approach To Reconsidering Risk Perceptions And Uncertainty: Understand Information Seeking During Covid-19, Yan Huang, Chun Yang Sep 2020

A Metacognitive Approach To Reconsidering Risk Perceptions And Uncertainty: Understand Information Seeking During Covid-19, Yan Huang, Chun Yang

Faculty Publications

The study examined the psychological drivers of information-seeking behaviors during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. Employing a two-wave (from April 16, 2020, to April 27, 2020) survey design (N= 381), the study confirmed that both risk perceptions and uncertainty were important antecedents to information seeking and that their effects were linked to emotional appraisals of the risk situation. Findings revealed nuanced relationships between these two constructs and emotional appraisals. Danger appraisal was positively associated with perceived susceptibility and susceptibility uncertainty but negatively related to severity uncertainty; hope appraisal depended on the interaction between uncertainty and risk perceptions. Implications of …

The Pull-To-Stay Effect: Influence Of Sales Managers' Leadership Worthiness On Salesperson Turnover Intentions, Vishag Badrinarayanan, Aditya Gupta, Nawar N. Chaker Sep 2020

The Pull-To-Stay Effect: Influence Of Sales Managers' Leadership Worthiness On Salesperson Turnover Intentions, Vishag Badrinarayanan, Aditya Gupta, Nawar N. Chaker

Faculty Publications

Given that salesperson turnover is a significant problem for sales organizations, sales researchers have devoted a lot of attention toward explicating various drivers and mitigators of salesperson turnover intentions. Within this domain, consistent with the popular sentiment "employees don't quit their jobs, they quit their bosses," scholars have explored sales manager-related triggers such as leadership style, salesperson - sales manager relational exchange, and several managerial characteristics. We extend this stream of research by developing and testing a framework of salespersons' perceptions of their manager'sleadership worthiness- a higher-order construct comprising of competence, charisma, and behavioral integrity - and its subsequent impact …

Under Pressure: Time Management, Self-Leadership, And The Nurse Manager, Elizabeth Goldsby, Michael Goldsby, Christopher B. Neck, Christopher P. Neck

Faculty Publications

Decision making by nurses is complicated by the stress, chaos, and challenging demands of the work. One of the major stressors confronting nurses is perceived time pressure. Given the potential negative outcomes on nurses due to perceived time pressures, it seems logical that a nurse manager's ability to lead nurses in moderating this time pressure and in turn to make better decisions could enhance nurse well-being and performance. Paralleling research in the nursing literature suggests that, in order to improve patients' judgement of the care they received, nurse managers should embrace ways to lower nurses' perceived time pressure. In this …

Α -Logarithmic Negativity, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

The logarithmic negativity of a bipartite quantum state is a widely employed entanglement measure in quantum information theory due to the fact that it is easy to compute and serves as an upper bound on distillable entanglement. More recently, the κ entanglement of a bipartite state was shown to be an entanglement measure that is both easily computable and has a precise information-theoretic meaning, being equal to the exact entanglement cost of a bipartite quantum state when the free operations are those that completely preserve the positivity of the partial transpose [Xin Wang and Mark M. Wilde, Phys. Rev. Lett. …

Ab Initio Leading Order Effective Potentials For Elastic Nucleon-Nucleus Scattering, M. Burrows, R. B. Baker, Ch Elster, S. P. Weppner, K. D. Launey, P. Maris, G. Popa

Faculty Publications

Background: Calculating microscopic effective interactions (optical potentials) for elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering has already led to a large body of work. For leading-order calculations a nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction and a one-body density of the nucleus were taken as input to rigorous calculations of microscopic full-folding calculations. Purpose: Based on the spectator expansion of the multiple scattering series, we employ a chiral next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) nucleon-nucleon interaction on the same footing in the structure as well as in the reaction calculation to obtain an effective potential for nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering, consistent in leading-order, which includes the spin of the struck target nucleon. Methods: …

Accurately estimating cause-specific mortality for immature insect herbivores is usually difficult. The insects are exposed to abiotic and biotic mortality factors, causing cadavers to simply disappear before cause of mortality can be recorded. Also, insect herbivores are often highly mobile on hosts, making it difficult to follow patterns for individuals through time. In contrast, the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton, spends its entire egg, larval, and pupal period inside a host stem. Therefore, with periodic sampling stage-specific causes of mortality can be ascertained. Consequently, we examined C. cinctus mortality in eight barley, Hordeum vulgare L., cultivars in two locations …

Faculty Publications

Wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton, is an economically serious pest of cereals grown in North America. Barley cultivars were previously planted as resistant crops in rotations to manage C. cinctus, but due to increasing levels of injury to this crop, this is no longer a valid management tactic in Montana. Therefore, we aimed to understand antixenosis (behavioral preference), antibiosis (mortality), and potential yield compensation (increased productivity in response to stem injuries) in barley exposed to C. cinctus. We examined these traits in eight barley cultivars. Antixenosis was assessed by counting number of eggs per stem and antibiosis was assessed …

Twenty One Years After The Publication Of The Generalized Faustmann Formula, Sun Joseph Chang

Faculty Publications

In this paper, I discuss developments of the generalized Faustmann formula since its publication in 1998. They included the formula for even-aged plantation management, uneven-aged management and forest valuation. These formula were followed by those for forest property taxation and valuation under taxation, the generalized van Kooten model, and the generalized Reed model as well as the uneven-aged management formula with carbon sequestration. The dynamic, incremental solution for the generalized Faustmann formula was then discussed. Pressler's indicator rate formula turned out to be equally applicable under the generalized Faustmann formula. Further, it enables the incorporation of risk preference to deal …

Social Inequalities In Flooding Inside And Outside Of Floodplains During Hurricane Harvey, Kevin T. Smiley Sep 2020

Social Inequalities In Flooding Inside And Outside Of Floodplains During Hurricane Harvey, Kevin T. Smiley

While previous research often finds flood impacts outside of conventional flood risk zones such as FEMA's 100-year floodplain maps, we have less of a sense of the social and demographic composition of the areas outside of floodplains that experience these impacts, even though social inequalities in flood risk and impacts more broadly is well-documented in the United States. Using data on 100-year floodplains, flood impacts, socio-demographic characteristics, and residential parcels, this study focuses on race as a primary marker of socio-spatial inequality to examine flooding inside and outside of floodplains during Hurricane Harvey in Greater Houston. Descriptive findings show that …
