Physical And Chemical Trace Evidence From 3d-Printed Firearms, And Use Of A Quadcopter For Targeted Sampling Of Gaseous Mercury In The Atmosphere, Oscar Beauchamp Black
Physical And Chemical Trace Evidence From 3d-Printed Firearms, And Use Of A Quadcopter For Targeted Sampling Of Gaseous Mercury In The Atmosphere, Oscar Beauchamp Black
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My forensic research resulted in the first peer-reviepaper to address the forensic challenges presented by 3D-printed polymer firearms. The work involved a systematic approach to the analysis of evidence stemming from 3D-printed firearms filling a critical void in current forensic knowledge. We used DART-MS to characterize the polymer evidence left behind by 3D-printed firearms as well as an evaluation of pre-existing firearm and toolmark techniques and fingerprint analysis. We demonstrated that 3D-printed firearms leave behind characteristic polymer residue on cartridge cases bullets and the receiving surface which can be identified using DART-MS. The culmination of the work includes a database …
Bacterioplankton Biogeography Of The Mississippi River Basin, Jason Taylor Payne
Bacterioplankton Biogeography Of The Mississippi River Basin, Jason Taylor Payne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bacterioplankton are important structural and functional components of river networks yet their biogeographical patterns in these systems are largely unknown. Using Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene we characterized variation in bacterioplankton community alpha diversity (within-sample richness of operational taxonomic units OTUs) and beta diversity (between-sample differences in composition) (1) along a 1 300-km downstream reach of the Mississippi River (2) over a range of temporal scales in the Lower Mississippi River (LMR) and (3) along cross-sectional transects repeated monthly for six months across the LMR floodplain. Particle-associated assemblages were richer in bacterial OTUs and more productive than free-living …
Fictionalist Truth Conditions For An Expressivist Semantics Of Slurs, Celine J. Geday
Fictionalist Truth Conditions For An Expressivist Semantics Of Slurs, Celine J. Geday
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are broadly two kinds of accounts of slurs: ones that place the derogation in the content of what is said or some concept associated with the words themselves or those that argue derogation takes places in the expression of some state of the slur-user – that derogation is part of the use of the slurring words. In this paper I argue that an expressivist account of slurs can be combined with a semantic account in which the truth conditions of the semantic account are fictional.

Reward And Punishment: The Neural Correlates Of Reinforcement Feedback During Motor Learning, Christopher Mark Hill
Reward And Punishment: The Neural Correlates Of Reinforcement Feedback During Motor Learning, Christopher Mark Hill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
‘By the carrot or the stick’ reward or punishment has been contemplated by instructors to motivate their pupils to learn a new motor skill. The reinforcements of reward and punishment have demonstrated dissociable effects on motor learning with punishment enhancing the learning rate and reward increasing retention of the motor task. However it is still unclear how the brain processes reward and punishment during motor learning. This study sought to investigate the role of reinforcement feedback in cortical neural activity associated with motor learning. A novel visuomotor rotation task was employed with reward punishment or null feedback as the participants …
The Medicine Hat Block And The Assembly Of Laurentia: New Interpretations From Single-Grain Zircon Analyses, Blake Oswell Ladouceur
The Medicine Hat Block And The Assembly Of Laurentia: New Interpretations From Single-Grain Zircon Analyses, Blake Oswell Ladouceur
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Medicine Hat Block (MHB) is one of the core cratonic elements that amalgamated in the Paleoproterozoic to form Laurentia. However the role of the MHB in the formation of Laurentia is poorly constrained due to virtually all of the MHB being concealed by Proterozoic and younger supracrustal sequences limiting availability of data. The primary sources of samples from the MHB are 1) xenoliths of variable metamorphic grade including gneisses amphibolites and meta-plutonic rocks collected from Eocene volcanic rock; and 2) similar lithologies recovered from boreholes that penetrate to the MHB basement. Previous work on samples from the MHB yielded …
Molecular Simulation Of Graphene Oxide (Go) Nanocarriers For Doxorubicin: Effects Of Ph And Go Pegylation On The Drug Loading, Retention, And Release, Mina Mahdavi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation as a powerful tool is used to investigate the graphene oxide (GO) based drug delivery system in the process of drug loading, drug carrying and drug release. Doxorubicin (DOX), a widely used anticancer drug, is used as a drug model. The effect of different parameters including pH levels and the oxidation level of GO sheets on the drug loading mechanism is broadly discussed in this study. The drug release from the GO sheet using pH stimulus is explored and results confirmed that GO can release DOX molecules at acidic pH level.

The Effect Of Magnesium Supplementation On Physical Performance Of Collegiate Football Players, Shannon Marie Boguth
The Effect Of Magnesium Supplementation On Physical Performance Of Collegiate Football Players, Shannon Marie Boguth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mg supplementation can maximize energy stores for exercise, decrease indicators of inflammation, and increase the rate of lactate clearance. While these functions of Mg can benefit exercise capabilities, research is lacking on their effects on specific performance parameters. The purpose of this study was to determine if Mg supplementation would increase performance parameters in NCAA Division-I football players. Eighty-one participants were separated into position groups and randomly assigned to receive a daily placebo, low dose of Mg (100 mg), or high dose of Mg (200 mg). Participants completed a pre- and post-test for performance parameters that included 1RM clean, 1RM …
Connecting Thread, Christen Parker
Connecting Thread, Christen Parker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Up until about the 1960’s, sculpture was dominated by work made with metal, wood, or stone. These materials would be described as “hard” or “masculine,” while materials such as fabric or yarn are described as “soft” or “feminine.” Fabric is known for its softness and malleability and is commonly used to cover the human body for objects such as clothing or bedding. The materials that I have selected are generally considered soft, yet protective, but are also thought of as insubstantial and fragile. As a child, I would see quilts and hear stories about how my maternal grandmother and great-grandmother …
Evaluation Of Best Practices In Child Nutrition At Child Care Centers In Mississippi, Whitney Clara Black
Evaluation Of Best Practices In Child Nutrition At Child Care Centers In Mississippi, Whitney Clara Black
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Results: Survey responses indicated that the majority of directors rated themselves as skilled at several key areas of best practices, especially in creating a clean, pleasant place for the children to eat and in using program nutrition requirements to ensure that food and nutrition needs of the children are met. Analysis of the center menus proved the latter to be true as the recommendations for Vitamin A, Vitamin C, calcium, and iron were either met or exceeded for females 4-8 years-old, and males 4-8 years-old. A need for more training was also indicated, especially in writing food and nutrition procedures …
Intelligence-Led Policing: Linking Local And State Policies To Establish A Comdefinition, Chad B. Prosser
Intelligence-Led Policing: Linking Local And State Policies To Establish A Comdefinition, Chad B. Prosser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research project studied agencies within local and state levels through their official policies in order to establish a comdefinition of ILP while establishing themes that link the predominate policing methodologies together. A definition could not be generated based on the data analyzed. Despite this, three themes emerged that link ILP agencies to agencies that implement other policing philosophies: Intelligence, Community, and Analysis. The majority of agencies do not implement ILP; however, almost all of the agencies within the sample frame of this study acknowledge or implement certain portions of the ILP methodology making it a flexible alternative to implement …
Meaning, Purpose, And Experiential Avoidance As Predictors Of Valued Behavior: An Application Of Ecological Momentary Assessment, Jeffrey Pavlacic
Meaning, Purpose, And Experiential Avoidance As Predictors Of Valued Behavior: An Application Of Ecological Momentary Assessment, Jeffrey Pavlacic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Values-based interventions in therapeutic settings direct behavior with avoidance and escape functions towards valued domains that are intrinsically reinforcing. This “progression” towards valued domains fluctuates on a daily basis, predicting less psychological stress. Contemporary conceptualizations of meaning in life delineate two primary domains: purpose (goal achievement), and significance or presence of meaning (the extent to which a person perceives themselves as “mattering”). These domains have not been simultaneously and systematically investigated in college students, a population at risk for developing maladaptive coping strategies and negative affect attributed to adjustment-related issues (e.g., binge drinking, depression, increased risk for suicidal ideation). College …

The aim of this study was to synthesize a smart light sensitive polymer which activates and releases the encapsulated drug on exposure …
Environnmental Influences On Caribbean Octocoral-Symbiodiniaceae Symbioses, Mark Mccauley
Environnmental Influences On Caribbean Octocoral-Symbiodiniaceae Symbioses, Mark Mccauley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A Caribbean octocoral colony is an assemblage of the octocoral host, dinoflagellate algae (family Symbiodiniaceae), bacteria and other microbes, together functioning as meta-organism (holobiont). Even though octocorals dominate many Caribbean reefs, compared to scleractinian corals, little is known about their biology under ambient or potentially stressful conditions. Of the nine species of octocorals (gorgonian corals, Order: Alcyonacea) studied, each had significantly different polyp behaviors, biochemical compositions, Symbiodiniaceae parameters, isotopic signatures, in addition to hosting distinct microbial assemblages. We identified multiple Symbiodiniaceae species (Breviolum minutum, Breviolum B41, Breviolum B1a and Breviolum B1i), inhabiting the gorgonians. These symbioses were temporally and …

Identity, Dissent, And The Roots Of Georgia’S Middle Class, 1848-1865, Thomas Robinson
Identity, Dissent, And The Roots Of Georgia’S Middle Class, 1848-1865, Thomas Robinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation, which focuses on Georgia from 1848 until 1865, argues that a middle class formed in the state during the antebellum period. By the time secession occurred, the class coalesced around an ideology based upon modernization, industrialization, reform, occupation, politics, and northern influence. These factors led the doctors, lawyers, merchants, ministers, shopkeepers, and artisans who made up Georgia’s middle class to view themselves as different than Georgians above or below them on the economic scale. The feeling was often mutual, as the rich viethe middle class as a threat due to their income and education level while the poor …
My Feet Are Chained: Settler Colonialism And Mobility In The Florida Borderlands, 1812-1866, Christine Antoinette Rizzi
My Feet Are Chained: Settler Colonialism And Mobility In The Florida Borderlands, 1812-1866, Christine Antoinette Rizzi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project uses the framework of mobility to understand how settler colonialism functioned in a tri-racial southern borderland in the nineteenth-century. Nineteenth-century Florida constituted a borderland characterized by competition for land and resources among Seminole Indians, African Americans, and white Americans. White Americans regulated mobility, i.e. the physical movement of peoples, in order to privilege their own settlement in Florida, divest native peoples of their land, and enslave people of African descent. Beginning in 1812 and lasting through the first half of the 1860s, white Americans used legislation, the settlement of white families, the solidification of a slave system, and …

Analysis Of Brevundimonas Subvibrioides Developmental Signaling Systems Reveals Unexpected Differences Between Phenotypes And C-Di-Gmp Levels, Lauryn Anne Sperling
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The DivJ-DivK-PleC signaling system of Caulobacter crescentus is a signaling network that regulates polar development and the cell cycle. This system is conserved in closely related bacteria, including the sister genus Brevundimonas. Previous studies had shown unexpected phenotypic differences between the C. crescentus divK mutant and the analogous mutant of Brevundimonas subvibrioides, but further characterization was not performed. Here, phenotypic assays analyzing motility, adhesion, and pilus production (the latter characterized by a newly discovered bacteriophage) revealed that divJ and pleC mutants have mostly similar phenotypes as their C. crescentus homologs, but divK mutants maintain largely opposite phenotypes than …

Historical Groundwater Data Analysis Of The Wilcox Aquifers In Lafayette County, Mississippi, Adam Schildhammer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lafayette County, Mississippi, is located in the northern central part of the state and relies on groundwater resources for all of the municipal water needs in the county. The population is increasing in the county; therefore, groundwater withdrawals are as well. With such a high demand on groundwater, it is important to have an understanding of the historical trends of the groundwater levels to determine is the population is over pumping the available supply. The Meridian-upper Wilcox aquifer and the lower Wilcox aquifer are the two groundwater sources for the county. In order to fully understand the behaviors of these …
Design And Analysis Of Efficient Parallel Bayesian Model Comparison Algorithms, Robert Wesley Henderson
Design And Analysis Of Efficient Parallel Bayesian Model Comparison Algorithms, Robert Wesley Henderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bayesian model comparison provides a rational and consistent method for applying logic and probability to the problem of evaluating models. Model comparison requires numerical techniques that are usually very time consuming to run. This dissertation proposes extensions to several existing numerical model comparison techniques, including nested sampling and thermodynamic integration, that incorporate parallel algorithm design to achieve significant speed-ups. Serial computer performance gains have sloin recent years, and most processing speed improvements are seen in the area of parallel architectures. This work discusses the design, theoretical analysis, and empirical analysis of these algorithms, focusing on the performance of these algorithms …

Mefenamic Acid – Hpmc As Hg Amorphous Solid Dispersions: Dissolution Enhancement Using Hot Melt Extrusion Technology, Ashay Shukla
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mefenamic acid, a BCS class II drug, displays high permeability and low solubility, thereby exhibiting a poor dissolution profile. Hence to improve the solubility and dissolution rate of Mefenamic acid, Hot Melt Extrusion (HME) technique was employed. The amorphous solid dispersion matrix exhibited enhanced dissolution with desired release characteristics. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose acetate succinate (AquaSolve™ HPMC-AS HG) was used as a carrier with the poloxamer (Kolliphor P407). The drug load was varied from 20% to 40% within the blend. Drug and polymers were blended using a twin shell V-blender for 10 minutes and extruded using an 11mm twin-screw co-rotating extruder (ThermoFisher Scientific, …
Building An Automated Q-A System Using Online Forums As Knowledge Bases, Kyle Moore
Building An Automated Q-A System Using Online Forums As Knowledge Bases, Kyle Moore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Question-Answer systems traditionally use expensive and difficult to produce structured knowledge bases. Recent systems have used unstructured natural language sources as their datasets, but most of those sources have been overly broad or difficult to extend. Online forums are a largely untapped source of information that can provide both depth and breadth when limited to a specific domain, as well as being adaptive to the introduction of new information. In this paper, I conjecture that online forums can be similarly and effectively used as an unstructured knowledge base for Question-Answer systems. I use a relatively simple summarization-based approach to analyze …

An Improved 3d Complex-Envelope Four-Stage Adi-Fdtd Using The Fundamental Scheme, Qi Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Three corresponding reference methods are developed. The CE explicit FDTD method is used to solve the problem with a point source and perfect electric conductor (PEC) boundaries. The problem with a point source and absorbing boundary conditions (ABC) is solved by the 3D free-space Green's function in the frequency domain, and then transformed to the time domain using the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). For the problem with a plane wave and ABC, the frequency-domain solution is obtained using the volume integral equations and method of moments (VIE-MOM), and is then transformed into the time-domain solution using the IFFT. Comparison …
Predictors Of Behavioral Health Among Firefighters In Their Third Year Of Fire Service, Victoria Alicia Torres
Predictors Of Behavioral Health Among Firefighters In Their Third Year Of Fire Service, Victoria Alicia Torres
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Employee turnover is expensive, as job training can cost upwards of 30% of an employee’s annual salary (not including additional onboarding expenses; Boushey & Glynn, 2012). This is especially true among high stress, dangerous occupations that require specialized training such as firefighters (Envisage Technologies, 2016; Knoll, 2011; Patterson et al., 2010). Health status is a primary reason for job concerns that may lead to decline in job performance and employment separation (Hourani, Williams, & Kress, 2006; Virtanen, Kivimäki, Vahtera, Elovainio, Sund, Virtanen, & Ferrie, 2006). Two research areas that support this notion include literature on the biopsychosocial model and occupational …

The Synthesis Of New Donor-Sigma-Acceptor Compounds As Potential Current Rectifiers, Trey Gautier Vaughan
The Synthesis Of New Donor-Sigma-Acceptor Compounds As Potential Current Rectifiers, Trey Gautier Vaughan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The zwitterionic D-σ-A’s are characterized by having an anionic donor, a cationic acceptor, an intervening sigma-bond bridge, and an aliphatic tail. The aliphatic tail is of such length as to impart greater solubility in organic solvents since the formal charges on the donor and acceptor lead to poor solubility. Additionally, the aliphatic tail is required for Pockels-Langmuir deposition to facilitate the favorable van der Waal’s packing when combined to form dense monolayer registries. These monolayers may then be suitable for measuring the bulk electrical properties.
