Experimental And Numerical Study Of Process Parameters Effects Towards Part Quality And Porosity During Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing Processes., Subin Shrestha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Powder bed additive manufacturing (PB-AM) process utilizes an electron beam or a laser as a heat source to melt the metallic powder particles. These processes have the capability of freeform fabrication, however certain defects such as porosity, high surface roughness, etc. would hinder its application. It is important to understand the effect of the process parameters and the underlying physical phenomena, which lead to the formation of such defects. In this regard, a three-dimensional (3D) thermo-fluid model is developed to study the effect of beam speed on the surface morphology during powder bed electron beam additive fabrication (PB-EBAF). Besides, the …

No Vacancy: Family Vacations On The Road, On The Water, And On The Edge., Amy Jackson Sellers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a memoir about the best and worst of traveling on summer vacations with my family as a child and as an adult. This piece is an ode to both my parents and to the art of the family road-trip, which is all but lost thanks to cheap flights, cell phone screens, and a general reluctance to take significant time off work. By alternating between lighter and heavier material with each chapter, this memoir avoids the saccharine nature of nostalgia while still being true to all the brilliance and poignancy of the past. By telling the chapters through …

Novel Inference Methods For Generalized Linear Models Using Shrinkage Priors And Data Augmentation., Arinjita Bhattacharyya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Generalized linear models have broad applications in biostatistics and sociology. In a regression setup, the main target is to find a relevant set of predictors out of a large collection of covariates. Sparsity is the assumption that only a few of these covariates in a regression setup have a meaningful correlation with an outcome variate of interest. Sparsity is incorporated by regularizing the irrelevant slopes towards zero without changing the relevant predictors and keeping the resulting inferences intact. Frequentist variable selection and sparsity are addressed by popular techniques like Lasso, Elastic Net. Bayesian penalized regression can tackle the curse of …

Rethinking Meredith Monk., Tracy Monaghan May 2020

Rethinking Meredith Monk., Tracy Monaghan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Meredith Monk’s decades of work embody an interdisciplinary art that exists at the intersection of sonic, visual, and kinesthetic artistic media. To date, scholars and critics of music and dance have only studied aspects of her work in isolation and have tended to omit the other critical aspects of Monk’s compositional language. For example, music scholars omit analysis of movement in their analyses, while dance scholars omit musical analyses. This has led to inappropriate categorization of her work, particularly into the vein of minimalism. My project represents the most in-depth study of all aspects of Monk’s music to date by …
