The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell
The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the historical accuracy of Robert Hugh Benson's historical novels "The King's Achievement," "Come Rack! Come Rope!," and "By What Authority," arguing that despite their fictional romantic elements, these novels authentically portray the historical relationship between the English and Catholic Churches during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Bell opens by distinguishing the aims of the historian from those of the novelist, then situates Benson biographically as a convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism whose religious sensibility shaped his literary work.
Drawing on the "Lingard-Belloc History of England" as an authoritative historical source, the thesis traces the …

He served as a Mississippi congressman for twelve years, served as President Buchanan's Secretary of the Interior, resigned in January 1861 to serve in the Confederate military, and was appointed by Jefferson Davis to supervise covert activities based out of Canada. Thompson contributed a great deal to Oxford and to the establishment of the new university there. Southern newspapers and histories of the time lauded him as an honorable and accomplished statesman, but Thompson remains a largely neglected figure …

The Development Of Colloid Chemistry, Oscar A. Bouise
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
At first, it was a blur, that had shrouded a great mystery for ages and ages, until some seventy odd years ago. Then came Thomas Graham, who could not satisfy himself with merely viewing a blur as a blur. Being a scientist, he applied his mind experimentally, with the keen precision of any of the eminent astronomers using a telescope, and viewed more clearly this mist which hovered above the horizon . But maybe it was not due time fir the unfolding of the great secret, for Graham's focus only revealed a more complicated mist that had been seen before. …

During the past two decades, substantial advances have been made toward the understanding of various phases of heat regulation. Many threads leading to the explanation of the complete mechanism of heat regulation of the body have been unraveled. Altho the exact anatomical location, extent and relations have not yet been determined, it has become evident that the chief control of body temperature is thru the central nervous system. Especially important regions are the basal nuclei and the brain stem. Barbour has produced evidence, confirmed by Hashimoto, Prince and Hahn, Rogers, Bazett and Penfield, that temperature control occurs by means of …
