The Incidence Of Trichinella Spiralis In The Diaphragms Of Swine From The Louisville Abattoirs., Stuart Lyle Adams

Trichinosis is a disease caused by the parasitic nematode Trichinella spiralis. When meat containing encysted larvae is consumed the cysts are dissolved by the action of the gastric juice in the stomach and the larvae migrate to the intestine where they mature, copulate and give birth to living young within a week of the original infection. The larvae enter the lymph spaces and are carried to the thoracic duct from which they reach the venous circulation and thence the arterial circulation by way of the heart and the pulmonary capillaries. Facts and figures show that education is the largest and the most important business of the nation. Approximately one fifth of the American People are now in public elementary or secondary schools. To finance the facilities required for this vast army, who are seeking an education, more than two billion dollars are required for current expenses, including capital outlay and interest. A total instructional personnel of approximately a million is required to carry on this program. In 1938 one and one eighth million pupils were graduated from high school, and it is estimated that one out of seven of this …

Colorimetry measures the quantity of absorbed light nephelomery measures the quantity of reflected light. Nephelometry posses certain advantages not to be found in other quantitative methods. The average worker is accustomed in most cases to estimating relatively large amounts of substances by gravimetric means, the limitations of which are well known. Insolubility, knowledge of composition, purity, rapid filtration, accurate weighing, constancy of ignition--many of these are sometimes difficult in practice to attain. Nephelometric determinations often may be carried out without the necessity of accomplishing the above.

Analysis of samples of oat hay frequently reveals concentrations of nitrates sufficient to be toxic and cause occasional livestock losses. Pigweeds and sorghum having high concentrations of nitrate nitrogen have also been reported as being toxic to cattle. In view of this fact this study was begun to determine what factors might play a role in nitrate metabolism and the extent of their influence.
