A Graphical Solution For Batch Steam Distillation Of A Binary Mixture., Howard D. Carlson 1921-

The theory for the graphical solution of batch steam distillation of a binary mixture is presented and illustrated. The results obtained from this graphical procedure are compared with actual experimental results. The comparison showed very close agreement between the graphical results and the experimental results. Three sets of experimental data are shown for benzene-bromobenzene mixtures and one complete set for benzene-toluene mixtures.

In almost every classroom in the country there are overage boys and girls, retarded children who have been pushed along through school after repeated failures have convinced both them and their teachers and companions that they are of little consequence. Since not much can be done to remedy the situation after so many years, the only solution in most cases is to pass the children along as rapidly as possible, allowing them to sit in the successive grades where the intellectual tasks are completely beyond their limited abilities. Although the problems and implications of chronic illness will be discussed in their broader outlines, the purpose of this study is to see more specifically how chronic illness affects a particular group of patients. The questions, what are the problems and the needs of the chronically ill, what is the community doing to meet those needs, what are the facilities and what should they be, will be related to a representative sample of Louisville General Hospital patients. According to the census approximately 53 per cent of the farm land in South Dakota was used for pasture in 1945. An additional eight percent was used for the production of hay. This thesis presents results on methods used to produce a hard surfaced wood product. The methods involve the parting of the wood fibers on the surface by a special serrating tool, followed by surface impregnation and final curing. The serrations on the wood surface produce an artificial grain upon curing. A preliminary investigation was made to improve the rot-resistance of wood by gaseous treatment. Results of such treatments show some limited success with formaldehyde on yellow poplar and warrant further study. An investigation was made to find a substitute for teak wood used on submarine decking. A number of combinations …

Success or failure - there are no other two words which can create more joy or sorrow to both pupils and teachers. Some of the teachers in Halleck Hall Junior High School feel that they are not satisfied with the achievement made by the slow-learners, or low groups, with whom they work. An attempt has been made, under the direction of the principal, to classify pupils entering Halleck Hall Junior High School, into homogeneous groups. A unit was constructed for the study of film heat transfer coefficients of a heavy fuel oil in viscous or streamline flow. The heat exchanger was of the shell and tube type, having extended longitudinal steel fins welded to the tube. Auxiliary equipment consisted of an oil pump, oil storage reservoirs, piping, and means for measurement of temperatures and oil flow rates. The unit was operated both as a fin type heat exchanger with the oil in contact with the finned surfaces, and as a straight tube and shell exchanger with the oil on the tube side. Oil flow rates …

Ethylcellulose was refluxed with Stearic, Oleic, Linseed Fatty acids, and a neutral Mineral Oil in the presence of a solvent. The products recovered were analyzed to determine if any possible reaction had taken place. Conditions for the reaction were carried out so that the temperatures obtained could be in the near range of varnish cooking, that is between 375 and 500°C. The I solvents used were diethylbenzene, boiling point 180oC and tetralin, boiling point 208oC. In each case approximate stoichiometric proportions of the fatty acids and ethylcellulose were used. These were refluxed to a sensible minimum viscosity of solution. The …

The repercussions of war upon the 4-year accredited high schools of South Dakota during the period from October, 1941, to October 1943, have been numerous and intense. There have been considerable discussion concerning the effects of the war upon the schools, many articles have been written on the subject, and some surveys over the United States as a whole have been made. In SOuth Dakota it appears that there is a definite shortage of qualified educational instructors to teach the physical sciences and coach athletics.
