The origin of the Future Farmers of America in South Dakota did not occur by chance. Instead, it grew from the desires and needs of farm and ranch boys enrolled in vocational agriculture in South Dakota high schools. Numerous vocational agriculture departments in the state had agriculture clubs preceding the organization of the F.F.A. in South Dakota. Many of them were planning and carrying to completion various activities now common to the F.F.A. in this state. However, these clubs lacked a coordinating agency such as a state association operated by and for representatives from their own group. W.P. Beard, state …

Kentucky slavery was attacked during the summer months of 1845 from within by one of the state's native sons. Cassius M. Clay, son of a Madison County slaveholder, began the publication of The True American, an abolition paper, on June 3, of that year. He caught the tide of slavery controversy in one of its numerous periods of flux. At that time opinion on the slavery question was not solidified anywhere in the country. Since 1831 most of the opposition to the "peculiar institution" was centered in the states north of the Mason-Dixon Line. but even in that vast region, …

The many economic hardships which faced American farmers from 1920-1923 were varied in nature. Crop failures through unfavorable weather, marketing conditions and factors involving purchases, credits, loans, and transportation were but a few of the early problems of the farmers. Purchase of land and equipment at high prices and at peak times and the marketing of products during unfavorable marketing conditions brought many farmers face to face with bankruptcy.

A study of the drying of Buna-S in crumb form (designated as GR-S) is presented in which investigations of vacuum and air drying are made. The drying characteristics are presented and the effect of drying on the quality is evaluated. Vacuum drying is investigated using a shelf and a rotary type unit. The individual effects of temperature, vacuum, thickness of crumb layer, and size of crumb particles are studied. Data are correlated by means of drying rate curves. Comparisons of the effects of the variables are made using these curves. Air drying is studied by the use of a shelf …

There have been developed various colored ethyl cellulose lacquers that compare favorably with standard nitrocellulose lacquers in physical tests. Ultra violet light caused rather pronounced darkening of the lighter colors such as white and light yellow, probably because of the use of high amounts of phenolic resin. Also because of the presence of relatively large amounts of phenolic resin, the cost was somewhat higher than a comparable nitrocellulose lacquer. Suggestions for further work and improvement are included. An ethyl cellulose lacquer has also been developed to be applied by spray or brush to ethyl cellulose plastics with a minimum amount …

While the writer was an undergraduate he spent two Summers in the Panamint mountains above Death Valley, California. Hiking with one of the few old-timers remaining in that region he noticed that "the old desert rat" would stoop occasionally to pick up certain rocks which he would examine closely. Some went into a pouch he carried. They were later crushed and "panned." If they made a "showing" in the gold-pan, the prospector would retrace his steps and arduously search for the parent vein. This study of thirty eight unmarried mothers known to the Children's Agency of Louisville, Kentucky is an attempt to find out what happens to these girls after the agency has terminated its contact with them. The study is not concerned with the problem of unmarried motherhood as such, but rather with the individual girl who gives birth to a child out of wedlock.
