A Pathological Investigation Of The Lake Poinsett Fish Disaster, Herbert Bach

During the first week of April, 1946, the ice cover of Lake Poinsett, South Dakota began breaking up and many thousands of dead fish appeared on the surface of the water. This was the beginning of a spectacle never before witnessed in this territory. Strong April winds swept ice fragments and dead fish in to the lake shores within a few days there were from three to five tons of dead fish on every fifty feet of shore line and a like number of dead fish remained floating in the water nearby.

An analysis of the literature shows the close analogy between liquid crystalline phases in solution (fluids separating from main portion of solution and having some of the directional properties of crystals) and unipolar coacervates (solvated micelles of like charge separating as a distinct colloidal phase). A theory is here advanced that liquid crystalline phases in solution are the direct result of a maximum in osmotic pressure which is predictable from the first approximate equation of the Debye-Huckel theory in the same manner as unipolar coacervates were predicted by I. Someone has said that Hitler failed to conquer Russia because there was no strong internal ally, i.e. 'Fifth Column', to prepare for his armies. Such an opinion heaps enormous credit upon Joseph Stalin because he launched investigations and trials of alleged traitors as early as 1935. Some critics prefer to call the trials and resultant executions 'blood purges' since they also served the purpose of eliminating virtually all of Stalin's political opponents. Ethylcellulose Lacquer Coatings For Polystyrene Plastics., Stuart V. Heil

An ethylcellulose lacquer system for both decorative and protective purposes was developed for use on polystyrene plastics. It was found that a one-coat lacquer containing only alcohol solvents produced the most satisfactory finish. Formulations were based on experimental work, conducted to determine the effect of the various lacquer components on the plastic. The results of a study of formulations on a two-coat system are presented.

This thesis is divided into three parts: I. The Surface Impregnation of Wood; II. Use Characteristics of Impregnated wood; and III. Investigations of Resin Adhesives. The material presented in Part I is a continuation of previous experimentation that had established general methods for producing a hardened surface wood product. The methods involved parting of the wood fibers on the surface by a special serrating tool, followed by a surface impregnation and final curing. I. IMPROVED TECHNIQUES FOR WASHING IRON BLUE SUSPENSIONS
The investigation of several procedures for the speeding of the washing of iron blue suspensions to remove electrolytes is reported. The use of several techniques to coagulate blue particles in the colloidal range to cause more rapid settling was found to be of little value. A conventional Oliver filter and centrifugal clarifier were found to be unsatisfactory for clearing iron blue suspensions. Considerable advantage in washing by settling and decantation was obtained with the settling of the blue suspensions in relatively shallow vessels. This study is an attempt to follow the development of the group of children who attended the Mental Hygiene Clinic Nursery School of Louisville, Kentucky in its first three years, September, 1939 through May, 1942. The children were studied on a comparative basis of their behavior in the two school situations - nursery school in 1939-1942 and elementary school in 1946. The study not only considers the child's behavior in the classroom, but also attempts to evaluate the effects at personality and environmental influences upon the child's school adjustment - his health, conditions in the home, and mental development.
