Five hundred years have passed, and Joan remains a living breathing presence, when those others of her day have become little more than names, a museum of labelled shadows. What is the explanation of this continued interest in a young girl who lived for only nineteen short years in the first part of the fifteenth century? Before attempting to answer this question, let us briefly summarize the facts of her life: she was born, it is believed, on January 6, 1412 in Domremy, a small town in north-eastern France. Water And Water Vapor Barriers For Structural Plywood : Ii. Core Void Fillers For Structural Plywood., James Van Dyck Fear

This thesis presents the results of an investigation conducted to improve the weather resistance of plywood assemblies used in prefabricated housing manufacture. Specifically, this work involved water sealers for edge joints (called edge sealers), the prevention of surface transfer of water vapor through plywood (called vapor barriers), and fillers for structural defects in the wood (called core void fillers). Two edge sealers for plywood were developed that were considered successful in resisting water permeation. One was a quick drying paint formulated by the addition of 30 per cent leaded zinc oxide to 70 per cent Arco primer paint No. 156. …

In January, 1947, the social studies unit, "The Ohio Valley (The Middle states)," was distributed to all Louisville Elementary Schools to be accessible to the fifth grade teachers. This unit, prepared and written by the Division of Curriculum and Research under Dr. John Dotson, will be described in greater detail in Chapter IV of this study. The University of Louisville, like most other universities, played an important role in World War II in the training of Service Men for active duty in the Navy, and now in the post-war era, finds herself taxed to the limit to provide educational facilities for her veteran students. To admit large numbers of students, whether veteran or non veteran, without some sort of screening process to identify those who obviously could not do college work would be wasteful of manpower and public moneys. This thesis is a report on coatings exclusive of the porcelain enamels which may be used at temperatures as high as 750*F., and also a description of the properties of the more heat resistant resins of commerce. The method of preparation and testing of the various coatings investigated in this research is given, and the results are tabulated and discussed. Best results were obtained with Dow Corning silicones of the 800 series heavily pigmented with either zinc dust or aluminum bronze, and with glycerol phthalate -- silicone coatings pigmented with aluminum bronze.

A Substitute For Wood Veneer., Edwin R. Arbegust

This thesis is a report of an investigation for a substitute for wood veneer to be used as face material for wire-bound boxes. The fiberboard substitute was made using a heavy paper backing with a wood waste mixture of chips and sawdust with various types of adhesive binders. The following adhesives were used singly and in mixtures: Starch, sodium silicate, asphalt emulsion, animal glue, urea resin with a wheat flour extender, rosin, and casein. The composition and test results of the fiberboard panels made in the laboratory are reported.

The purpose of this survey is to make clear the plan, content, organization and work of public safety departments and their two main subdivisions, fire departments and police departments, in the United States. All cities within the population classes of 250,000 to 650,000 were canvassed. There are a total of twenty-eight cities within that category. Of these, a total of 15 cities replied fully or partially to the questionnaires. Municipalities replying to all three sections of the survey were: Birmingham, Alabama; Denver, Colorado; Louisville, Kentucky; St. Paul, Minnesota; Rochester, New York; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Toledo, Ohio; San Antonio, Texas. …

English Contemporary Opinion Of The American Civil War, Vorice Jackson Waters

This thesis, submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1947, presents a survey of British public opinion during the entirety of the American Civil War. Drawing on contemporary newspapers, pamphlets, letters, diaries, parliamentary speeches, and official government records, the study analyzes the conflicting opinions expressed by individuals, organizations, and government officials in England from the outbreak of hostilities through the conclusion of peace. The thesis finds that English upper and middle classes generally sympathized with the Confederacy, influenced by historical parallels to the …

This is a study of patients readmitted to Nichols Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky during the period of April through December of 1946. This particular project was undertaken because on general observation, there appeared to be an unusual number of patients being readmitted to the hospital after having received "maximum hospital benefits" at a previous hospital admission and having been discharged "improved". To bear out this observation, a sample study was made over a ten day period and it was found that 14 percent of all the patients being admitted were readmissions. Since this was true, the question arose …

The purpose of this paper is to examine three of Dreiser's major novels in order (1) to show that his philosophy of life is exemplified in his fiction and (2) to determine whether or not his ideas undergo any change. The problem of success or failure of college students in various courses and subjects, has led to considerable thought and study among persons responsible for the guidance of college students and of high-school graduates about to enter college. Even a casual observer will rapidly admit that many students in our colleges fall by the wayside. A large number do poorer work than it seems should be expected of them.
