The purpose of this thesis is to trace the historical development of autobiographical writing in Kentucky; to analyze the literary and philosophical characteristics of these works and, by this means, to divide these writings into several categories; and, finally, to reveal by an interpretation of these autobiographies, certain cultural aspects of Kentucky life and society. As thus stated, the intentions of this study are several; but, actually, all these aims are inseparably related part. of a single general problem which is to investigate Kentucky autobiographical writing as a whole in order to better understand the individual works in that literature.

The purpose of this study is to record the history of the governmental structure of the city of Louisville from 1780 until 1870. In 1864, the Red Cross was born by the signing of the Treaty of Geneva. It was to become the only great international organization of its kind to relieve suffering during times of war. The founders had advanced the idea that relief in time of epidemics and disaster would be equally valuable, but this idea was not incorporated in the treaty. When the Congress of the United States ratified the treaty, service and relief in time of epidemics and disasters was included with the permission of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva. In July 1946 the Board of Health of Louisville and Jefferson County, Kentucky, announced its decision to curtail services of the public health department serving the metropolitan area surrounding and including Louisville, and the outlying agricultural region in the rural part of Jefferson County. In the past decade the combined health department for Louisville and for Jefferson County had accomplished much for the health needs of the citizens of the community. Simultaneous drying of curing superphospate is shown to be of definite value in increasing the available P2O5 content. Raw superphosphate heated to 80 degrees C., and analysed after 1 hour, 4 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours of curing contained 16.92%, 19.67%, 20.66%, and 20.78% of available P2O5 respectively. For the same periods of time samples cured at room temperature contained 15.28%, 17.1%, 17.7%, and 18.82% of available P2O5. There was a larger amount of P2O5 available after 4 hours heating than after 48 hours at room temperature. This increase represented a 12:1 time-ratio in favor of the heated sample. …

The alfalfa seed producing areas of the United States, during the past decade, have become increasingly more limited and the chances of obtaining satisfactory seed yields have become more and more uncertain. At one time, South Dakota enjoyed an enviable position in alfalfa seed production. In 1929, South Dakota reached its peak in alfalfa seed production when 50,000 acres of alfalfa were harvested for seed with a production of over 100,000 bushels of alfalfa seed. For the nine year period, 1925 through 1933, South Dakota ranked within the top ten states of the United States as an alfalfa seed producer. …

Present methods of breeding new barley varieties are costly, laborious and lengthy. Populations from a cross are grown until they become homozygous before much selection by comparative yield trails can be made. The pedigree method limits the number of crosses that can be studied because of the large segregating populations necessary for the expression of desired gene combinations. Because of the enormous amount of work involved, it would be highly desirable for a plant breeder to work only with superior parental material. The weight of an animal is usually the most important measurement in assessing the results of livestock experiments. This is especially true with meat animals such as cattle, sheep, and hogs. The weight is measured by individual weightings is a variables that is influenced by many factors. In most experiments the weight desired is the average body weight under conditions being imposed by the experimental treatment. Since the introduction of 2,4 - dichlorophenoxyacetic acid as an herbicide, considerable study has been given to the physiological action of this compound on various plants. Changes in metabolic rate have been reported by many workers (1,2,3). These changes have been measured by the respiration of tissue slices, by changes in the carbohydrate and nitrogen constituents of the plant, and by changes in the water content.

There has been considerable discussion in recent years concerning the educational proficiency of the eighth grade graduates of one-room rural schools as compared to that of the eighth grade graduates of independent town and consolidated schools as they enter our high schools. These discussions have not been limited to educational circles alone but have also interested members of the general public. In these discussions opinions are many and factors are few. Conclusions in the majority of cases are based on what the individual wishes to believe true, not what is actually true. In making a study of the above named …
