In the classification of organic reactions, condensation is used in two different ways. In a very narrow sense, condensation means any reaction in which a carbon to carbon linkage is formed. In a broad sense, it refers to an organic double decomposition reaction in which the reactants are both large in molecules, and one of the products is a small molecule such as water, ammonia, or hydrogen chloride. An example of a condensation, as defined in the narrow sense, would be the reaction of acetaldehyde to form aldol. However, if the aldol is converted to crotonaldehyde with the elimination of …

A reduced profit margin in the poultry business has brought about the demand for more efficient methods of poultry farming. A savings of a few cents per bird on the cost of raising poultry may mean the difference between profit or loss. With this is mind an efficiency study was made of three types of electric brooders. Two of these types of brooders, the infra-red lamp and the conventional electric resistance type heating element and hover, are available commercially. The portable floor plate brooder with electric heating elements was constructed for research purposes in this study. These three brooders units …

More than two and one-half million rural urban boys and girls in this nation are now members of one of the largest rural youth organizations; namely, the 4-H Club. Adult leadership available has not been adequate to service this group; consequently, it has become necessary to call upon the junior members of local organized 4-H Clubs to assume duties and responsibilities in assisting with this leadership work. Over 1,500 of the 15,000 or more 4-H members in South Dakota are currently enrolled as Junior Leaders.

An improved pulping process has been developed by the USDA which uses straw as the basic ingredient in the production of boxboard and corrugating paper. If a plant or plants using this pulping process could be built in the state, a use would have been found for a product produced by farmers that has very limited commercial value to them at present. For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the relative effectiveness of the various methods for the relief of farmers in financial distress. Much interest has been centered around price support programs which would prevent farmers from becoming financially distressed but little attention has been devoted to an analysis of modern farm bankruptcy legislation which would permit individual farmers to rehabilitate themselves when faced with economic ruin.

South Dakota farmers each year produce approximately 2 million bead of hogs which are valued at 75 to 100 million dollars. The income derived from the sale of hogs makes up approximately 20 percent of their cash fars income. The financial return received by the swine producer is an indication of his success. This success will depend in part upon the kind and cost of ration and the gaining ability of the pigs receiving this ration. Flower and fruit drop is a great problem to growers in many tomato producing areas. Workers have observed this phenomenon of the loss of flowers or undeveloped fruit and have associated it with heat, moisture, and physiological condition of the plant. In view of the association of carbohydrate level with yield, one phase of this experiment was designed to determine the separate and combined effects of temperature and light on fruit setting. Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus (Rosenbach) Zoph has been known to man for some time, for it was back in 1878 that Koch noted the presence of micrococci in pus from wounds. in all probability these organisms were Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus or their very closely related type species Micrococcus pyogenes var. albus. It is very interesting to note relatively small amount of attention paid to this genus after the early taxonomic work was completed, and it was for this reason that this study was undertaken. Previous studies of the physiological condition of athletes have furnished evidence indicating that strenuous and persistent activity modifies cardiovascular function and increases body strength. The modifications in cardiovascular function which come as a result of activity remain only as long as the activity continues. Further investigation was conducted in this study with specific attention given to the cardiovascular and strength modifications of football players during, immediately following, and several weeks after the season. This study utilized two previously validated cardiovascular tests: namely, the Harvard Step Test and the Carlson Fatigue Test. Roger’s strength test, which also has been previously validated, …
