Pan Evaporation Measuremnts As A Criterion For Predicting The Irrigation Requirements For Various Crops, Niel A. Dimick

Measurement of evaporated water from various devices has assisted in determination of the evaporation losses from large storage reservoirs. Evaporation is a large consumer of open-reservoir stored water which is used for irrigation, municipalities, manufacturing and numerous other purposes. The use of evaporation pans for measuring the quantity of water evaporated produces better results for estimating the resource extent of our stored water. Precautionary steps can then be taken toward the possible occurrence of predicted water shortages. This is essentially the principle involved in determining the consumptive use of moisture by irrigated crops. Consumptive use is commonly referred to as …

Educators and physical educators are very much concerned about the degree of carry-over of physical education activities into the leisure experiences of pupils. They also seem to be cognizant of the need for noting the degree of interest and skill developed by pupils in these activities for carry-over to adult life. The desirability of some form of budgetary procedure for public schools has long been recognized. It is wise planning to apportion available funds among the various items necessary for the efficient operation of the school system, and serious effort should be made to restrict expenditures to the various estimated amounts set forth in the adopted budget. In the larger city districts, in most cases, the boards of education are progressive and forward-looking and have developed budgetary procedures to a high degree. Track and field meets have been held for high-school athletes in South Dakota since 1903, when Yankton College first sponsored a meet on May 8th at College Park in Yankton. The sport has grown steadily, and in 1955 the South Dakota High School Athletic Association sanctioned thirty-three conference meets, twenty independently sponsored meets, eight regional meets, three cross country meets, twelve dual-triangular-quad-rangular type meets, three junior-high meets, and one state meet. In addition to this, South Dakota high-school athletes participated in nine out-of-state meets. The author has been unable to find any extensively collected historical data or any assemblage …

The bacteria examined in this study are facultative psychrohiles, which have their origin in the mesophilic group. Different members of the group have their optimum growth at temperatures slightly below the mesophilic range, but will grow at temperatures ranging from below zero to 25 degrees C. they have become increasingly important with the advent of the frozen food industry. Their presence in frozen foods is often the cause of objectionable flavor, putrid odor, or unnatural appearance. During the life cycle of Hypoderma lineatum DeVillers, the first instar larva spends considerable time migrating through the body of the host. During this migrating through the body of the host. During this migration the larva spends a period in the submucosa of the esophagus. This stage is referred to as the esophageal first instar. The following study was conducted on cattle grubs of this stage. The larvae which were used in this study were dissected from beet gullets obtained from the John Morrell & Company Packing Plant. Cytoplasmic male sterility has become a factor in corn seed production during the past number of years. The advantage of male sterility is that the producer is saved the expense and trouble of detasseling in the single-cross and double-cross seed fields. It also could be an advantage in certified seed production in that it would eliminate the human error factor in the detasseling process. The disadvantage is that, at present, male sterile and male fertile seed must be mixed or blended to insure a kernel set when grown by the farmer. It is highly desirable that no seed go out …

In recent years the importance of an adequately trained elementary-school principal has been recognized by many of our school officials. Because of this recognition the State Department of Public Instruction in South Dakota is increasing its requirements for an Elementary-School Principal’s Administrative certificate. Effective July 1, 1955, the above certificate will be issued to elementary-school principals who devote and one-half or more of their time to administration and supervision, and who have earned nine semester hours of graduate credit in the field of administration, supervision, and guidance, with a minimum of two semester hours of credit in each field. Before World War II the economic conditions and the oversupply of teachers tended to build up restrictions against employment of married-women teachers in the public schools. Many school boards went ahead and made board regulations against the hiring of married-women teachers. After the start of the World War II large numbers of the public-school teachers left the teaching profession to enter the services of their country and some to secure more lucrative employment. One of the principal sources of water for irrigation is the underground water stored beneath the surface of the earth. Various methods have been devised to extract this water so that it may be applied to growing crops in regions of inadequate rainfall. Near the Sioux River in Eastern South Dakota, ample water has been obtained at shallow depths to irrigate average sized fields in certain areas. The advent of antibiotics in animal nutrition placed new emphasis on the intestinal microflors. E.L.R. Stokstad (38) presented the following observations as indicating that the growth promoting effect of antibiotics was due to the action on the bacteria of the intestinal trace. “(1) Antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents of widely varying chemical structure are effective. This precludes the possibility of their being incorporated into any growth essential for the animal. (2) The ineffectiveness of antibiotics in increasing growth in the germ free animal. Since the late 1800’s when athletics were forced into the secondary school curriculum by popular demand, methods haven been sought by which they could be financed. Gate receipts have and still do provide the bulk of the funds to finance the athletic programs in these schools. Athletics originated as an extra-curricular activity and in many schools are still so regarded. Consequently, school boards generally have not accepted the fact that athletics should be financed from tax funds in the same manner as the academic portion of the secondary school curriculum.
