The production of beef in South Dakota is one of the largest industries in the state. Those in the business of producing beef are constantly looking for newer methods of management, nutrition and breeding which will economically increase the production of beef. It has been shown that adding diethylstilbestrol to the rations or implanting diethylstilbestrol pellets in the ears will generally economically increase beef production by increasing rate of gains and feed efficiency. Investigation with mutagenic agents to increase variability in plants have met with some success in the improvement of agronomic crops. One such agent is colchicine, a poisonous alkaloid extracted from the autumn-flowering crocus (Colchicum autumale L.). Evidence of the mutagenic nature of colchicine without changing the chromosome numbers, has been shown in sorghum. Observations of the variability induced in sorghum lines by colchicine treatment inspired the present study which was undertaken to determine what effects this chemical might have on an inbred line of corn. Results similar to those in sorghum could be of utmost importance in corn breeding since …

Horseradish peroxidase is a well-known enzyme and one that is often studied. It is well suited for enzyme studies due to its availability, relative ease of preparation, and stability. Although a wealth of knowledge has been gained about this enzyme, very little can actually be said about the mechanism of the reaction. Much of the work that has been done has been concerned with the reaction with hydrogen peroxide. Because of the time consuming and costly nature of the total collection in vivo digestion trials, various other methods have been tried to get reliable digestibility data in a faster and less costly manner. One of the more recent methods being used is the “artificial rumen” (in vitro) technique. This method makes use of rumen bacteria and simulated conditions in the rumen of the animal. The appearance of true-breeding diploid mutants from a true-breeding diploid inbred line of Pers. treated with colchicine has been reported. The authors of the reports later proposed that a variant arose through a colchicine-induced somatic reduction accompanied by point mutations with subsequent restoration to the diploid condition. This mutant cell, favored by a positional advantage or desirable genotype, divided producing daughter cells which multiplied rapidly and soon comprised most of the apical variation to form a plant exhibiting the genotype of the original mutant cell. To the engineer dealing with fluid flow in distribution networks such as urban water distribution systems, the study of flow and pressure throughout the system is a complex problem involving tedious calculations unless some sort of analogue aid is given him. The McIlroy Fluid Network Analyzer, devised in 1948 by the late Malcolm S. McIlroy, Professor of Electrical Engineering at Cornell University, has been an invaluable aid to the person investigating this problem of fluid network analysis. One of the interesting symbiotic relationships in nature is that existing between the ruminants and their microbial population. This arrangement has solved for them the problem of existing on an herbivorous diet. Most mammals can derive little benefit from the potentially available energy in plant materials, which is locked in the complex, insoluble polysaccharide, cellulose. Cellulase is not a mammalian enzyme, but it is part of the chemical machinery of a number of bacteria, some species of which reside in the rumen. The purpose of this experimental work was to determine and analyze the type, rate, and causes of corrosion in the South Dakota State college steam power plant condensate lines. Since corrosion at this power plant requires an excessive amount of money for labor and pipe replacement, an investigation leading to reduction in corrosion would justify this study and would benefit other people who have to contend with the hard waters present in South Dakota. Condemned beef livers cause a loss of several million dollars each year. This loss is felt not only by the meat packer, but the animal husbandryman as well as the consumer. Percentagewise, the United States annually condemns in federally inspected meat packing plants between two and 20 percent of all beef livers. These beef livers are principally of three pathological types. These types include liver abscesses, telangiectasia, and the “sawdust” liver. Little is known of the three liver conditions in regard to their causative agents.
