Bloat may spell disaster to any farmer on a given day. This kind of disaster is typical and not infrequent in ruminates especially cattle and sheep. Bloat affects polygastrics, why not monogastrics? Ruminants or polygastrics have a four compartment stomach utilizing protozoa and bacteria similar to a fermentation vat which catabolizes complex substrates into simple digestible nutrients while the monogastrics rely on secretions from the stomach lining. Primarily fermentation takes are water and larger amount of free gas, which can accumulate in the rumen when disposal is impaired. Why do animals dispose of these large quantities of gas 364 days …

In order to determine the nature of the inheritance of colchicine-induced mutations on a mutant derived by colchicine treatment from the sorghum variety Experimental 3, a true-breeding mutant P15 was crossed with its full sib P6 and F2 and F3 progenies were studied. Estimates of the number of genes which affected the expression of six different characters that had been mutated by colchicine treatment were obtained. The characters studied were days to heading, plant height, width of leaf, number of tillers, seedling base colot, and awn development. The estimated number of mutated genes for each of the six …

The successful operation of sewage stabilization ponds by a number of North and South Dakota communities during the past few years has shown this method of disposal to be adequate in taking care of the needs of small communities. Since land is relatively cheap compared to construction work involved in the building of a sewage treatment plant, and since the actual construction cost of a stabilization pond I s a comparatively small figure, this type of treatment has been readily accepted by the smaller communities. Since infiltration galleries have been effective as a means of securing large quantities of water from thin aquifers, the question has arisen as to whether or not a small horizontal well that would yield sufficient water for irrigation could be constructed at a cost that would be within the budget of the family-sized farm in South Dakota. If so, a subsequent problem would be the development of some method of estimating the quantity of water a particular aquifer will yield to such a well. The purpose of this research problem is to determine whether the experiences received through participation in State FFA Public Speaking contests have been beneficial to the contestants. The study is to reveal the relationship, if any, academically in high school and in leadership activities after leaving high school, between the contestants and their random selected classmates who did not participate in the speaking contests. South Dakota State College has participated in track and field meets since 1889. In that year South Dakota State, South Dakota University, and Sioux Falls College entered the State Meet. Since then the sport has grown steadily at South Dakota State College. In 1947 South Dakota State College added indoor track to the schedule; and in 1952 the NAIA Track and Field Meet, the AAU Track and Field Meet, and the NCAA Track and Field Meet were added. The basic purpose of this study was to seek means of improving the incomes of dairy farmers through the development of better markets for butter. In line with this, three major hypotheses were tested. The hypotheses were: (1) a sufficient proportion of consumers in Brookings and Madison prefer cultured butter to make it feasible to develop a market for it, (2) consumption of cultured butter can be increased by sales promotion, (3) development of a market for cultured butter will increase total butter consumption.

The problem of mastitis in dairy animals has received much attention in recent years. As the business of dairying has developed and grown, mastitis has become more significant to the farmer and the processor. The economic loss from reduced production and sale of milk, loss of breeding animals, veterinary and medical fees is paramount. Much of the emphasis when dealing with mastitis has been on cure rather than prevention. Basic textbooks in the area of public speaking frequently contain information concerning the importance of speeches of introduction. The authors consulted recommend that to achieve these purposes a speech of introduction should focus attention on the speaker without containing personal comments about the introducer, should focus attention on the subject without discussing it, and should build the speaker’s prestige without embarrassing him by over-praise. Despite this agreement among authors, there appears to be not direct experimental evidence to support the assumption that the effectiveness of a persuasive speech is influenced by the speech of introduction which precedes the communication.
