It is now an established practice to feed continuously certain feed additives in the rations of simple stomach animals for the control of disease, digestive troubles, bloat, internal parasites and for their growth stimulating properties. It is very important that additives of an antibacterial nature in rations for ruminants be studied thoroughly so their beneficial effects, if any, can be determined. If the bacteria are not functioning normally and digesting properly, the animal will suffer. Digestion of the ration would also be affected, and the efficiency of feed conversion would diminish. The purpose of the portion of this paper pertaining to the spotted alfalfa aphid is to present the results of an ecological study dealing with the distribution and seasonal abundance of the insect. This study was established in four specific areas of four southeastern counties of South Dakota. Observations included the varying weather conditions and their effect on the aphid. Potato leafhoppers were also investigated. Actual proof of the potato leafhopper migratory theory was not forthcoming until 1951 when entomologists of the North Central States, with the aid of entomologists in certain Southern States, voluntarily collected the needed data in …

The recent widespread interest in the cause of atherosclerosis in humans has stimulated research in many fields of science. Articles describing cholesterol experiments on humans and lower animals indicate that an elevation of the blood level of cholesterol increases the incidence of atherosclerosis. Bloor and colleagues suggested an interrelationship between the metabolism of cholesterol and the highly unsaturated fatty acids of the blood. In these experiments it was found that the fatty acids present in neutral fat had the lowest unsaturation, the phospholipids contained the fatty acids of intermediate unsaturation, and the fatty acids present in cholesterol esters had the …

Poultrymen are becoming extremely conscious of any disease which results in a decrease in production. Some of these diseases are the result of new intensive methods of management which place considerable stress on the individual bird. Probably the most important fungal diseases of poultry are aspergillosis, favus and moniliasis. Aspergillosis, an infection of the respiratory tract, is generally thought to be caused by Aspergillis fumigatus Frensius. Favus, a chronic dermatomyoosis (dermatomycosis?) is caused by Achorian gallimae. Moniliasis an infection of the mucous membrane lining the upper digestive tract is associated with Candida albicans and other members of the genus Candida. …

The following study arose from the discussion of a problem in a course in theoretical physics at South Dakota State College during the Winter quarter 1956-1957. The problem is stated as follows: “A symmetrically magnetized cylindrical magnet is rotating with constant angular velocity about its axis of symmetry. A straight wire at right angles to and in the plane of the axis of the magnet is arranged so that it can be rotated about the same axis. Our system of education must teach its students to recognize persuasion for what it is worth, to distinguish shades of meaning, to identify the hypocrisy of the demagogue and the flattery of the bootlicker. Because communication is so important in a representative government, some consideration should be given to the four overt communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Until very recent years, practically no emphasis has been placed up on the skill of listening in the school room. This investigation is to determine the amount of steam necessary to heat the buildings and to generate power on the campus of South Dakota State College. It is also concerned with a comparison of the cost of producing steam by burning coal and by burning natural gas. Part of the campus buildings are heated by low pressure steam. When the turbo-generator is in operation, the turbine exhaust steam is used for heating purposes. During periods of cold weather the turbine exhaust steam is not sufficient, and therefore steam at boiler pressure is reduced to the turbine exhaust pressure through a …
