Considerable research has been conducted on reaction time, blood pressure, and pulse rate in an attempt to determine their relationship to athletic performance. Slightly above average blood pressure and low pulse rate within normal limits are considered by present-day coaches to be desirable characteristics of an athlete. In sports and games in which movements of a participant are conditioned by signals, by movements of opponents, or by motion of the ball, reaction time is also of great importance. Some of the waters of South Dakota contain enough sodium chloride, sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfates. Often water from dams, dugouts, wells will become unsuitable for livestock and poultry consumption because of salt accumulation. Salt is an essential ingredient in the poultry ration but relatively small amounts are required. Cases have been reported where chickens suddenly became sick and died. These deaths, which occur without warnings, have the characteristics of being caused by microorganism. The production of grass in pastures of sloping terrain is usually limited by the lack of soil moisture. Moisture which would otherwise be available for plant growth is lost due to a high degree of surface runoff. When the rate of precipitation exceeds the rate in which water infiltrates into the soil, surface depressions are filled and overland flow begins. Pastures on sloping land are susceptible to high runoff rates. This is due in part to the fact that grazing lessens surface detention, when slopes are covered with thick stands of grass, a rather large volume of precipitation will be …

South Dakota farmers, in 1959, received 8.7 cents per dozen less for their eggs than the national average of 31.3 cents per dozen. This difference represented a loss of $10.9 million to South Dakota producers that year. A number of cooperative associations have expressed an interest in developing more efficient egg marketing systems. Improved cooperative marketing would create increased bargaining power and higher net returns for many producers. Cooperatives have played an important function in South Dakota egg marketing for many years. Egg marketing cooperatives handled over 20 per cent of total egg sales in South Dakota in 1957. These contributions may be increased by artificially producing antibodies in milk. In view of recent experiments the established theory that antibodies cannot pass the intestinal wall after the animal is a few days of age may not be true. Much information has been gathered to support this theory. In recent years, a subject of considerable speculation among South Dakota farmers is whether or not the use of nitrogenous fertilizers is profitable under conditions of dryland farming. There has been a prejudice against the use of nitrogenous fertilizers as giving a leafy, succulent growth, liable to drought damage. Frequent claims are that additions of nitrogen result in “burning” of crops when moisture conditions become unfavorable, and that under these conditions yields are often better without the use of fertilizer. Alfalfa is one of the most important crops grown in South Dakota. In recent years alfalfa acreages have been exceeded only by those of corn, oats, and wild hay. In this state, the alfalfa acreages has increased from 385,000 acres in 1946 to 2.3 million acres in 1958, an increase of nearly 500 per cent. Studies On The Persistence Of Corynebacterium Insidiosum In Soil And Of An Antagonistic Variant Of The Species, Gordon Albert Nelson

Studies were conducted on the persistence in of Corynebacterium insidiosum, the alfalfa wilt bacterium, and on an antagonistic variant of that species. The persistence was followed by plate counting colonies from soils heavily inoculated with cells of this bacterium. The antagonistic variant of the species was studied directly and from cells or culture filtrates spot-planted on agar media containing seeding of other bacteria. Most cells of the wilt bacterium remained viable on glass surfaces for over 7 months at different temperatures, and in moist sterilized soil for over 72 days at room temperature. Corresponding to the title, the present study was concerned with two aspects. In the first of these, two chlamydosporous sori from corn were collected from California and Washington and 18 chlamydosporous sori from sorghum were collected from California, New Mexico, Texas, and India. Chlamydosporous cultures or paired monosporidial cultures from these were hypodermically injected as desired into seedlings of one or more of four sweet corn varieties and 57 sorghum varieties. Chlamydosporous cultures from the two corn sources yielded head smut on three sweet corn varieties and not on any of 14 sorghum varieties. Cultures from 14 of 18 sorghum …
