Estimating the feeding value of forage grasses is one problem that has confronted nearly every livestock nutritionist. The conventional system of proximate analysis as it was developed in weends. Germany over 100 years ago has been repeatedly criticized because the products are variable for cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The crude fiber classification commonly suggests the fibrous, poorly digested and relatively unavailable portion of a feed. The metabolic pathway by which certain microorganisms incorporate atmospheric nitrogen into their protoplasm is at the present time unknown. In an attempt to determine this pathway scientists are studying the physiology of various nitrogen fixing bacteria and are within reasonable limits extrapolating this information from one organism to another. Thus far they have found certain physiological characteristics which appear to be common to all nitrogen fixing bacteria. Several years ago a species of the genus Achromobacter was isolated and shown to fix atmospheric nitrogen. Thus far very little has been published concerning the physiology of nitrogen fixation by this organism. …

Newspapers have often been accused of emphasizing the sensational giving minimum attention to the non-violent or “good” news in which young people are involved. Evidence to support or to disprove such accusations has, however, been lacking. The effect of different activities and conditioning exercises on the cardiovascular system has been the basis for many recent studies by physical educators and physiologists. No doubt much of this research has been prompted by statements such as that by Reidman, “An athlete is only as good as his heart.” Reidman reasoned that the ability of the athlete to perform work was dependent in large measure on the ability of the heart to supply oxygen to the muscles. During the period between 1940 and 1960 artificial insemination of dairy cows grew from the experimental stage to an extensive business enterprise in the United States. According to the Dairy herd Improvement Letter (Vol. 36, No. 3, A.R.S., U.S.D.A.) only 7,359 cows and heifers were artificially inseminated in 1939, but by 1959 this number had increased to 6,932,249. Along with the extended use of superior sires, a logical conclusion was that some attention should be directed toward increasing the use of good female germ plasm. The physical property of soil which enables it to pass or conduct water through its macro-pores is known as its permeability. Permeability should not be confused with infiltration, which is the term for expressing the absorption of water into the soil. The infiltration rate is the rate at which water will enter the soil surface. The rate at which water moves through soil is called the hydraulic conductivity; whereas a measurement of this same rate is used to calculate the permeability. Particles of ionizing radiation pass some or all of their energy to the electrons of the material and thus cause ionization or excitations. Because of the significance of water in biological and chemical systems, its decomposition by nuclear radiation has been studied. Tenderness in meat is a most important characteristic. Meat that has acceptable color, finish and flavor will still be rejected if it is not tender. Tenderness is also a very elusive characteristic and difficult to evaluate. Objective measurements of tenderness have been devised in an attempt to associate tenderness with a more stable factor such as connective tissue, amount of finish, age and size of muscle fibers. These measurements are not entirely successful. Subjective measurements such as taste panels give a better indication of over-all acceptability of meat but do not yield a definite value for tenderness. Experiments on rigor …

In recent years there has been an increasing tendency for some commodities, particularly livestock, dairy, and poultry products, to be marketed through a decentralized marketing system. The eastern South Dakota hog producer no longer has only one market outlet through which he must market his slaughter hogs, but rather has a choice of several market outlets. The hog industry has been a major source of income to the eastern South Dakota farmer during recent years. South Dakota state college requires hearing test as part of a physical examination for all entering freshmen. The purpose of the test is to discover students with a significant hearing loss. The test, administered by the college’s speech department, has been part of the examination program since 1952. A word intelligibility test was administered from a tape recording which was played to all entering freshmen through loudspeakers. There was evidence that this test, though it could be efficiently administered, did not discover students with highly significant hearing losses. Chronic respiratory disease in chickens and infectious sinusitis in turkeys were first recognized as clinical entities in the Unites States in 1942. They are now considered as diseases of major economic importance throughout the poultry industry. The loss from chronic respiratory disease and infectious sinusitis to the United States poultry industry has been estimated as 100 million dollars per year. Sphaerophorus necrophorus is of considerable economic importance since it is the cause of many pathological conditions in a wide variety of animals. One such condition is liver abscess of cattle. This one costs the packing industry several million dollars a year. Grant (15) suggested that a selective medium be devised for the isolation and cultivation of S. necrophorus.
