The Mechanism Of The Periodic Acid Oxidation Of (Bicyclopentyl)-L,L'-Dio, Richard John Falk

The failure of periodic acid to rapidly oxidize 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (I) in neutral solution prompted further inquiry into the mechanism of periodic acid oxidations. Despite the fact that periodic acid or its salts have been reported to oxidatively cleave, in good yield, compounds containing the α-keto alcohol structure such as acetoin, benzoin, benzofuroin, and diphydroxyacetone, it was reported that 20-methylpregnane-3β,17β,20,21-tetrol (II) was oxidized to pregnane-3β,17β-diol-20-one (III). This product (III) was isolated from the reaction mixture, in a high yield, suggesting that it was relatively inert to further oxidation. As previously reported, true-breeding diploid mutant plants arise for colchicine treatment of sorghum seedlings of lines Experimental 1 and Experimental 3. It was hypothesized that such mutants may result from point mutations made homozygous by a somatic reduction of the chromosomes followed by doubling in a cell which organized a new growing point after inactivation of the original by colchicine. The first part of this study was an attempt to test this hypothesis by treating with colchicine sorghum seedlings containing a reciprocal translocation in the heterozygous condition which serves as a chromosome marker to indicate whether chromosomal homozygosity was induced. …

As an instructor in the Beginning Clothing Construction classes at South Dakota State College, the writer became aware of the varying amounts and kinds of clothing experiences of students enrolled in the course, and felt a need for determining student achievement levels to provide optimum learning experiences for all. All incoming freshman Home Economics students were placed in Beginning Clothing Construction sections regardless of their past experience or training. Students with no experience were grouped with those having little or a great deal of clothing experience. The practice does not encourage the weaker students to learn, nor does it motivate …

The aim of vocational agriculture is to train both present and prospective farmers for proficiency in farming. Instruction should be provided for high school students, out-of-school youth, and adults. The bases for instruction include the needs of the community and the farming programs of the individuals enrolled in the vocational agriculture classes in the high school of that community. Skills and abilities in planning, operation, appraisal, use of approved practices, and record analysis are developed by means of instruction in the classroom, in the farm mechanics shop, and on the enrollees’ home farms. The transition to the pelleting of natural feeding materials has produced many problems. Various opinions have been expressed by the investigators regarding possible solutions to these problems. The proper mechanical formation of the pellet or wafer has been studied by several investigators. Several necessary factors have been determined. The temperature ranges that will produce the best possible product, from a feeding standpoint, have been tested against various pressures. The photographic method of analysis, introduced in 1922 by Professor J. Heyrovsky, is dependent upon electrolysis at the dropping electrode of the solution being analyzed. The method is based on interpreting current voltage curves that are obtained when solutions of electro reducible or electro oxidisable substances are electrolyzed in a cell in which one electrode consists of mercury falling drop-wise from a very fine capillary glass tube and the4 other electrodes is a pool of mercury. The need for minimum amounts of protein and energy by animals for maintenance, growth and production has been recognized for many years. It is also well known that the requirements will vary depending on species, age, weight and rate of growth or production. In order to provide livestock feeders with useful guides in feeding, several feeding standards containing recommended nutrient requirements have been prepared. The most commonly used standards for beef cattle are the “Morrison Feeding Standards” (1956) and the National Research Council’s “Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle” prepared by the Subcommittee on Beef Cattle Nutrition (1959). The problems of this thesis are: first, to trace the chronological development of periodicals printed in South Dakota from the date of the first known periodical printed in Dakota Territory through December 31, 1930; second, to study the types of periodicals produced; and third, to compile a check list as complete as possible of South Dakota periodicals during the period chosen for study. The date December 31, 1930 was chosen as a convenient cut-off date since few periodicals began after that date. The chronological development of those magazines published before 1930 was continued until suspension or to the present date. …

School reorganization was a point of intense interest in and about the communities of Alvord, Inwood, Larchwood, and Lester, Iowa during the year of 1956, 1957, and 1958. In the summer of 1958, an election was held and the communities and surrounding farm areas mentioned above voted to become one school district. Wild cats is problem in the small grain areas because it has certain characteristics which allow it to survive and infest the soil. It is an ecological equivalent to the crops with which it grows. It sheds its seed as they ripen and all seeds do not ripen at the same time. The seeds are dormant at the time they are shed and remain so for varying lengths of time; they may also go into secondary dormancy. News releases compiled and distributed by an information service must appear in print if they are to convey the desired information to the public. This study was conducted to determine the influence of illustrative material on the use by South Dakota weekly newspapers of news releases of the Agricultural Extension Service at South Dakota State College. The research was designed to compare, on the basis of usage, releases accompanied by the three most common forms of illustrative material (glossy photographs, mats, and plastic engravings) with the same releases when unaccompanied by illustrative material.
