Plants grow on seleniferous soils contain selenium which is the cause of a pathology known as “alkali disease.” Selenium toxicity has become a center of interest to many research workers. Selenium is incorporated into body protein when injected into or fed to an organism. These element is bound to proteins in such organisms as yeast, bacteria, rats, dogs, mice, chickens and sheep. Eichhorn and Clark reported the reaction mercury II ion with nucleosides. They also reported that when they used formaldehyde to block the amino group on the nucleosides, the mercury did not change the studied spectra. The reaction of …

This thesis was undertaken for the purpose of clarifying the Christian's obligations regarding the military functions of his government. This study involved an investigation of several attitudes toward carnal warfare as expressed within the Christian tradition. It began with an analysis of the ever-present polemic regarding pacifism and developed into a discussion of the moral implications involved in various defense strategies. Attention was also directed to the need of solving the arms race which precariously threatens the world with unprecedented destruction.

This study investigates the concept of human dignity in the light of the philosophy of humanism and of the New Testament. The thesis is aimed at examining, analyzing, and evaluating the humanistic views for their philosophical and practical worth; and comparing, contrasting, and harmonizing the good in them with those ideas in the New Testament which parallel them.

Investigating the New Testament as to the meanings of kerygma and didache and determining their relationship were the purpose of this study. Before determining their New Testament meanings, the usages and meanings of kerygma and didache and their cognates were surveyed in Classical Greek, the Septuagint and other Jewish literature with the aid of concordances and lexicons.

Diploid mutant plants that breed true in subsequent generations arise following colchicine treatment of sorghum seedlings of the variety Experimental 3. The production of diploid mutants was found to be dependent upon the genotype as well as the presence of certain environmental conditions after colchicine treatment. To explain the homozygosity of the mutants, it has been proposed that a reduction of chromosomes to a haploid condition occurred followed by doubling to restore the diploid number. To test this hypothesis, seedlings heterozygous for chromosome markets (one and two reciprocal translocations) were treated. After treatment of 320 seedlings heterozygous four one reciprocal …

The Poinsett soils of eastern South Dakota present a problem in soil classification and mapping because of local profile textural variations. Although these soils have a silty matrix which in some profiles appears to be loess, profiles only a few feet away contain admixtures of gravel, cobble, and stone. Moreover, their substrate are mottled and often stratified by color and texture. The silty materials from which the Poinsett soils are developed are more friable and appear to be more permeable than glacial till, but the admixtures of gravel, cobble, and stone make them less desirable than loess as a soil …

The development of the high school library in our nation’s schools can be divided into three definite steps. The early schools in the United States had no libraries. This phase was followed by an era in which schools purchased some books for students to read, but chiefly as a recreational activity. Green needlegrass (Stipa viridula Trin.) in the past few years has received wide acceptance for use in range renovation throughout the Northern Great Plains. Maximum germination of newly harvested green needlegrass seed cannot be obtained due to a high incidence of seed dormancy. This study was undertaken to determine the nature of dormancy present in green needlegrass seeds, to study the mode of expression of factors that causes dormancy in the seeds, and to seek a method which will reduce the dormancy in order to obtain maximum germination readings in the laboratory and in field plantings.
