Numerous reports from many parts of the world have described the occurrence of outbreaks of staphylococcus food poisoning. Some studies have incriminated raw milk as a reservoir of the staphylococcus organisms as the vehicle of transmission. Recently Cheddar cheese has been implicated as the contaminating agent in food poisoning outbreaks traced to dairy products. The frequency of outbreaks of staphylococcus food poisoning has stimulated interest in the characterization of members of the staphylococcus genus. The principal reason for measuring particle size distribution is for the utilization of the relationships that exist between particle size and soil performance characteristics. The most interesting property of finely divided substance is the tremendous surface-to-weight ratio which they possess. The surface-to-weight ratio varies inversely with the square of the particle diameter. Thus, properties of particles which depend upon the amount of exposed surface are generally influenced by the size of the particles. The purpose of this study was to develop a training film and a manual for use as a teaching aid in the coaching of the South Dakota State University Four-Five Defense. The method employed was observational and evaluational motion picture analysis. A checklist was developed by the author and validated by the football staff of South Dakota State University. This checklist served as the criteria by which the plays were selected to illustrate the correct execution of the defensive techniques. In order to obtain plant material for in vitro bud formation studies, many preliminary experiments involving germination and seedling growth were conducted. Anatomical studies were conducted to establish the identity of underground parts. Cyclic temperature changes from 20 0C and 30 0C (12 hours each) provided 97, 80, and 21% germination for mottled, grey, and purple seeds in 12 days. Mottled seeds require only 2 cycles of alternating temperature to approach or equal the germination percent obtained with 10 additional temperature alternations. Two cyclic temperature changes provided that one-fourth of the maximum germination percent of grey and purple seeds obtained …

Reservoir evaporation reduction with monomolecular film was investigated during the summers of 1962 and 1963 at Pactola Reservoir, South Dakota. This study was conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of reclamation and the Agronomy Department of South Dakota State College. In this study, a material composed of hexadecanol and octadecanol was applied as a molten spray in 1962 and a powder form in 1963. The molten spray was dispensed from fixed and mobile dispensing units with the mobile unit being superior. The powder was also spread from a mobile unit. Wool blankets are important to the economy of the state since South Dakota is one of ten leading states in wool production. Wool’s greatest competitor, synthetic fibers, has increased in production from 85.2 million pounds in 1949 to 470.5 million pounds in 1958, an increase of approximately 550 percent. This competition by synthetic fibers has resulted in the wool industry undertaking intensive re-search to develop finishes that would improve the quality of wool products. Results of South Dakota and Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Stations research indicated that wool blankets ranked highest of all fiber types in warmth qualities, however, shrinkage in …

Generally speaking, pavements may be divided into two broad classifications, i.e. rigid and flexible. The term rigid pavement is applied only to wearing surfaces constructed of Portland Cement Concrete. The term flexible is used to denote the tendency of all layers to conform to the same shape under traffic. The 4-H program receives considerable attention in event attendance as well as in publicity all through the state 4-H contests held during the South Dakota State Fair. Food Habits Of Bigmouth And Smallmouth Buffalo In Lewis And Clark Lake And The Missouri River, Thomas S. Mccomish

Food habits were determined for 386 bigmouth buffalo and 277 smallmouth buffalo collected in 1962 and 1963 from Lewis and Clark Lake and the Missouri River. Young-of-the-year bigmouth buffalo stomachs contained 100 percent zooplankton. Bigmouth buffalo (330 to 530 millimeters) stomachs contained 99 percent zooplankton in 1952 and 95 percent in 1963. Digestive tracts of young-of-the-year smallmouth buffalo contained 99 percent copepods and one percent sand. Smallmouth buffalo (250 to 400 millimeters) contained about 65 percent zooplankton, 30 percent phytoplankton, and the remaining five percent consisted of chironomid larvae, plant detritus, and sand.

Experiments were conducted over a period of two years to study the effects of amino acid supplementation of low and high energy and low and high protein diets on the performance of SCWL laying hens. This research was conducted in two different environmental conditions; one a litter floor, cold-wall poultry house, the other a warm-wall poultry house with individual cages. In the litter floor, cold-wall environment, methionine and lysine were added singly and in combination to a 16 percent protein diet containing 1414 Calories of metabolizable energy per pound and methionine singly and a combination of methionine and lysine to …

The inherent homeostatic properties of single- and double- cross corn hybrids were studied by growing the plant materials in six locations over three years. Measurements of plant height and ear weight were recorded and used to calculate means and variances. Variances were pooled over locations and years and confidence intervals for the variance estimates were computed by use of the chi-square method. A lower variance for an entry, when compared with other entries grown in the same environment, was considered to be the result of relatively better homeostatic properties. The appearance of true-breeding diploid after colchicine treatment of seedlings of certain diploid sorghum varieties has been attributed to a mutational effect made homozygous by somatic reduction followed by doubling to restore the original chromosome number. It was proposed that a mutant cell originating in the fashion described above could, though competitive advantage, form a new stem apex. After treatment of seedlings of two different but related tetraploid lines of sorghum, diploid plants have been obtained which were also mutants. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between muscular strength and predicted academic success of selected freshmen male college students at South Dakota State University. The muscular strength test used was taken from the cable-tension battery and the predicted academic success factor was represented by the American College Test composite score. Thirty freshmen male college students were randomly selected according to their American College Test composite score. In the fields of Civil, Hydraulic, and Agricultural Engineering, it is common for water to be delivered by means of open or closed conduits. Analysis of the flow within these conduits is decided into two categories, open-channel flow and pipe flow. Lembke observed the transition from part-flow to full-flow in steep circular drains; he noted five flow regimes for this transition. Flow Regime v of Lembke’s research was different from the others in that there was no stationary hydraulic jump concerned, but slug flow occurred in the conduit with a free outlet condition. Since about 1900, prominent writers in the field of public finance have found justifiable reason for condemning the general property tax. Many of its deficiencies are inherent in its basic nature while others arise from problems of administration. It is even doubtful that land should be deleted from the property tax base because of the windfall gains that would screw to present landowners. There is, however, strong justification for enacting modifications in the structure of the property tax and seeking means of strengthening its administration. One criterion used to determine the quality of milk is based upon its bacterial content. This immediately emphasizes the problems of determining milk quality. Bacteriological tests are, at best, only estimates of the number or the activity of the organisms present. Since its introduction to South Dakota dairy farms, the bulk tank has continued to increase in popularity. Its increased acceptance has caused new problems in determining milk quality. The bulk tank allows the farmer to cool the milk faster and more efficiently than ever before, thereby limiting bacterial growth. Quality tests should not only differentiate between good and poor …
