It has long been known that plants infected with certain virus strain develop no further symptoms when inoculated with another strain of the same virus. The phenomenon became known as premunity, antagonism, interference or cress protection workers have differentiated the terms cross protection and interference. A situation in which virus infection with one strain confers protection against a related strain was termed cross protection. Hypothesis were formulated to explain the existence of cross protection and interference. Workers have confirmed, however, that when two viruses, related or otherwise, were introduced at the same time into a plant, simultaneous infections by both …

Considerable research has been done on newspapers in the areas of type sizes, typefaces, leading between lines, readability, legibility and column widths. Tinker and Paterson conducted another study to determine the influence of line width and leading on the speed of reading 9-point type. The results indicate that optimal rate of reading occurs with line widths of 14 to 30 picas and with 1 to 4 pints leading. The Tinker and Paterson studies dealt with reading speed, the Murphy study concerned the proportion of readers who actually read the stories in the alternate forms, and the Hvistendahl study concerned reader …

Creep is a continuing deformation at elevated temperatures under constant stress. Creep data are important in the design of many machine members subjected to high temperatures. Examples of these would be steam and gas turbine components, thermal cracking equipment in oil refineries, jet air-craft, missiles, rockets and mobile reactors. The second law of thermodynamics shows us that the efficiency of an ideal heat engine can be increased by increasing the temperature of the working fluid. The optimum strength-to-weight ratio is an essential requirement in aircraft structural design. But all these facts bring us the problem of higher creep rates for …

This study is an outgrowth of preliminary investigation by Hovland and Wesley to determine environmental conditions required by plants to establish vegetative cover on highway back slopes. From the nutritional phase of this study it was determined that nitrogen and phosphorus were the only deficient elements in the four exposed subsoils that were investigated. Deficient nutrients are supplied to exposed subsoils by the application of commercial fertilizer. The fertilizer is usually applied on the soil surface and seldom worked more than a few inches down onto the soil. In th Northern Great Plains, this zone of fertilizer placement dries out …

For a brief period of fifteen years, the Board of Internal Improvement occupied a place of prominence in the political and economic affairs of Kentucky. From its creation in 1835, until the revision of the constitution in 1850, the board spent vast sums of state money on the various projects for the internal improvement of the state. The magnitude of the undertaking, and the amount of state money spent, make this one of the most important areas for study in the political and economic development of Kentucky. Disposal of poultry manure is becoming a greater problem as confinement of bird increases, flocks become larger, and poultry acreages decrease. Also, poultry production units are moving closer to urban areas, necessitating greater sanitation practices. Water pollution caused by surface runoff of farm animal wastes has caused additional concern for proper disposal methods. Several methods of disposal of poultry manure that have been proposed as solutions include: digesting, lagooning, field spreading as a liquid, field spreading of fresh droppings, drying, and composting. This study is focused on the other end of the continuum, on the teen-ager who is struggling through the mist and dew of the morning of his day. An Eclectic teaching approach to William Faulkner’s Requiem for a Nun for use in an Introduction to literature class. The purpose of this thesis is to provide the reader with a practical teaching approach to a novel in an introduction to literature course. The approach to the novel put forward in this thesis combines a number of partisan critical approaches to the novel and applies them to William Faulkner’s Requiem for a Nun. In the alpha particle model for a nucleus one assumes that the system is composed of alpha clusters, in so far as possible, bound in some symmetrical configuration. This model is supported by the observation that many nuclei emit alpha rays. Since these nuclei are presumably constructed from alpha particles alone, bonding within such particles is apparently much stronger than that between two alpha particles and between an alpha particle and a nucleon. In the simple implementation of the model, lower excited states are associated with excitation of the 3-3 rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom. The rotational levels are …

A study of electrons in molecules is guided by the results of experiments in x-ray diffraction and molecular spectroscopy. From the symmetry existing in most molecules and a convenient set of atomic orbitals as basic functions, group theoretical calculations yield linear combination of atomic orbitals as molecular orbitals. The above technique has been very successful thus far in explaining such experimental results. This group theoretical approach is applied in the work reported here to the Rh 6(CO)16molecule observed by two Wisconsin chemists. In explaining the bonding of this molecule, two different approaches using different sets of hybrid orbitals were attempted. …

Economic losses from plants grown on seleniferous soils have been reported in the literature for the last 30-35 years. The overall magnitude of such losses will never be known, but to individual gerdsmen they often meant financial ruin. The earliest report of conditions indicative of selenium poisoning was by Madison (1856) as indicated by Franke in 1934. Selenium toxicity has attracted much attention in Wyoming and South Dakota in particular, where in several areas the soil contains unusually high levels of selenium. This element is absorbed and concentrated in various parts of plants. From there it may be further transferred …
