Evidence Of Socio-Economic Classlessness In The Major Fiction Of Daniel Defoe, Nicholas J. Goergen

This investigation will consider the thesis that the fiction of Daniel Defoe contains definite indications that he idealizes communism in the sense that he seems to uphold a system in which goods are owned in common and are available to all as needed. Previous criticism of the work of Defoe has considered the apparent dichotomy between his presentations of seemingly virtuous moralizing alongside mercenary capitalism. The critics of my acquaintance discuss these separately and are apparently unable to correlate Defoe’s morality with his economics, except, perhaps, as ironic device. Instead, this thesis will submit that Defoe’s moral and economic beliefs …

The Corn rootworms are beetles of the family Chrysomelidae, genus Diabrotica whose larvae feed on the roots of corn. Large populations of the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera Leconte, recently developed in Nebraska and surrounding states, thus increasing the economic importance of these insects. Widespread soil insecticide treatments for both species were adopted after 1951 and have become widely accepted. Considering their economic importance, little is recorded about the biology of rootworms. Perhaps this is because they are soil insects. This study was undertaken to provide some of the basic information necessary to research on better methods of control. Members …

The purpose of this study is to provide the reader, particularly the undergraduate, with an aid for studying John Steinbeck’s In Dubious Battle. In the course of this theses these four themes, namely, the phalanx theory, the concept of leadership and of ownership, and non-teleological thought, are examined first in Steinbeck’s writing in general, and then in novel In Dubious Battle in particular. The design of notched members by structural engineers has become a practice that is now being employed more frequently than in the past. This is particularly true in the aircraft, missile, automobile and shipbuilding industries where available space is necessarily a minimum. Heat transfer by free convection is a commonly encountered phenomenon and yet is difficult to analyze and evaluate. It would prove interesting and informative to obtain a view of the disturbance in the field of flow, and also quantitative data to evaluate temperature variations and analyze the heat transferred. Therefore it was proposed to build a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, not only to give a “picture” of the phenomenon but also to supply sufficient information to determine temperature distribution in the flow field and aid in the determination of the free convection coefficient. Exact solutions of the stress distribution in elastic bodies are confined to a selected group of geometric configuration. The nature of irregular-shape problems prohibits a solution by closed formula or even by a general form of solution. All experimental techniques have weaknesses which limit their usage. Strain gauges give a numerical solution but only at a surface. Stress coating are materials which will fail when a prescribed stress value is reached. Such brittle coatings will show the direction, magnitude, and distribution of tensile stresses over an entire surface but they are restricted to some designated level of failure. Two dimensional …

In 1963 it was estimated that occupational injuries cost employers $4.5 billion. An additional $1 billion to $4 billion in wages were lost by employee depending on what one wishes to include. Based on a Gross National Product of approximately $585 billion in 1963, this injury cost represents a potential increase in the Gross National Product of approximately one percent. It appears that this is certainly one area of waste which would warrant further investigation, particularly in light of the present day nationwide drive for economic growth. The recent development of practical cation-sensitive glass electrodes prompted the writer to investigate the feasibility of their application to the monitoring of nutrient-cation activities in natural soils. It soon became evident that the nature of the suspension effect must be more clearly understood if such application were to yield meaningful results. The suspension effect may be defined as the pH of solution in equilibrium with a suspension minus the pH of the suspension, both pH values being measured potentiometrically. In previous years several studies have been undertaken to determine the effects of various ambient temperatures on physical performance. These studies, employing either the application of hot baths and showers, or cold sprays, abdominal packs, showers, or hip baths, have been conducted on individuals immediately before and after work performance. Hegle investigated the effect of immersion in a heated whirlpool bath on arm and shoulder girdle strength, generic endurance, and reaction time at four different time intervals (30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes). This thesis involves the study of the effect of change in moisture content on the load carrying capacity of three member nailed wood joints. New wood truss designs developed today can be tested with truss breaking equipment. Precise structural data on wood joints in extended service conditions are inadequate to justify enthusiasm for design precision. In agricultural construction and other utility buildings, wood-nailed trusses are extensively used because of their simplicity and economy. The weakest and most unpredictable parts of a nailed-wood truss are likely to be in the joints. Thus, the logical point for design improvement is the joint. …

Dairy scientists have known for a number of years that diacetyl is one of the principle flavor components of butter, buttermilk, and cheese cultures. Of the tests which have been introduced to determine diacetyl, one of the first was the heavy metal gravimetric method. This procedure involved distillation of the diacetyl from the mother substance. The most common derivative formed was nickel dimethylglyoximate. Principle disadvantage of this method were that large amounts of sample were required for steam distillation when the products were low in diacetyl. During the summer and fall of 1964, 292 fishes collected from Oahe and Big Bend Reservoirs in central South Dakota were examined for parasites. Sixty-five percent of the 18 different species of fishes examined were parasitized by at least one of the 16 species of parasites found. Seventy-five percent of the 162 fishes examined from Oahe Reservoir were found to be infected with at least one species pf parasite, and 54 percent of the 130 fishes examined from Big Bend Reservoir were infected. The fishes found to be harboring the largest number of species of parasites were the black bullheads …

Athletic coaches and athletes have shown considerable interest in weight training as a means of increasing explosive powder and leg strength. It is thought that this interest has been due mainly to studies which have indicated a positive relationship between weight training and jumping. It appears that many basketball coaches use weight training in pre-season conditioning but discontinue its use when the regular season begins. A widely used method for the solution of various problems dealing with laminar boundary layer flows is that originated by T. von Karman and K. Pohlhausen some forty years ago. The basic idea on which their so-called integral method rests is to satisfy, for a given set of boundary conditions, prandtl’s boundary layer equations o the average in contrast to what are commonly called “exact” solutions, the latter I reality being numerical integrations of Prandtl’s equation. The term “breast blister” was originally used to denote only fluid filled blisters. However according to modern inspection practices the term has been broadened to include other abnormalities of the skin covering the breast area. Article 81.84 of the USDA regulations governing the inspection of poultry for wholesomeness states: “Any organ or part of a carcass which is affected by an inflammatory process shall be condemned.” As illustrated in plate I, the removal of these defects usually involves trimming away enough surrounding breast skin to cause turkeys with breast blisters to be downgraded to Grade B or C. Although the genetic behavior of sorghum has been studied since 1916, it has never been as extensively investigated as certain other species. Information on the cytogenetics of sorghum has been slow in accumulating, chiefly because of the difficulty in distinguishing between the chromosomes. The use of chromosome structural markers as aids in cytogenetic studies has been suggested by Brink and Cooper and Burnham. Chromosomal interchanges have been used successfully in some crops to determine which chromosome pair carried specific genes or group of genes. The distribution of farm income depends greatly upon resources available to individual farm operators and their ability to combine resources profitably. The consistency low cash farm receipts from marketing in Lake County as compared to other counties in economic area 4-B in 1959 and 1960, and the widespread low farm incomes in the distribution of rural family incomes in his county indicate that a great proportion of the farm families in this area have not made appropriate adjustments to changing economic, technological, and production factors. Present theories describing polarography processes are inadequate for, they do not correctly predict experimental results. However, this use of the average conceals how poorly the instantaneous time-dependence of the diffusion current is represented. Accordingly this paper attempts to illuminate the situation and do what it can to remedy the problem. Some authors have sought to make theory agree with experiment by improving the approximate solution of the accepted partial differential equation.
