The purpose of this investigation was to determine if progressive rope skipping training bouts affect recovery pulse rate and strength of foot extension. One-hundred ninth grade girls enrolled in the required physical education program at Whittier Junior High School, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, were divided into three experimental groups and one control group. The subjects in the experimental groups participated in an eight-week progressive rope skipping training program during which they met for sixteen training sessions, which consisted of rope skipping preceding the physical education activity period. The control group did not participate in rope skipping during the time of …

The sale of livestock is an important source of farm income for both South Dakota and Nebraska producers. In 1964 cash income derived from livestock sales by producers included 68.1 percent of South Dakota’s total cash farm income. (1) The average for the four year period 1960 to 1963 was 479 million dollars per year. During the ten year period, 1956 to 1965, beef cow numbers in South Dakota increased from 1,320,000 to 1,724,000. The wealth that flows into South Dakota from nonresident hunter purchases of license, equipment and supplies, room and board, gasoline, and various other hunting services is an important addition to the state’s economy. Is 1953 is was estimated the average nonresident pheasant hunter spent a total of $131 (1,2). A 1959 estimate placed per capita spending of the nonresident hunter at $203.39. (3) In 1963, 204,210 small game licenses were sold; 68,901 or 37.7 per cent were to nonresidents. Total spending by nonresidents for licenses that year was $1,722,525.

Turbulence is characterized by random fluctuation motions in the longitudinal and transverse direction which have macroscopic effects upon the flow pattern. In the study of fluid flow, it is beneficial to visualize motions of particles of different sizes. The particles can be categorized into those of molecular magnitude and those of a larger scale. The larger scale particles can best be thought of as fluid lumps. Fundamentally, there are two types of fluid flow (laminar and turbulent). The energy given to the movement of sediment is a loss of energy from the water stream itself insofar as its flow rate is concerned. The movement of sediment is a complex function. One of the primary factors in the determination of the transport of sediment is to evaluate the sediment concentration distributions in channel flows. In the United States alone there are 63,226 patients in mental hospitals and another 174,727 in homes or schools for the mentally retarded. Insecticides play a major role in the economy of South Dakota which is basically an agricultural state. Large tracts of land in cultivation and pasture offer unlimited propagating areas for injurious plant insects. Natural control measures are not always adequate to ward off frequent outbreaks of these insects. As a result steps have been taken to minimize the chance of these outbreaks developing into epidemic proportions. This paper is an attempt to correlate intelligence and motor proficiency and to determine if remedial physical education will improve motor proficiency significantly. The Oseretsky Tests of Motor Proficiency were used by the author in a test-retest situation during a six month program of remedial physical education. This paper discusses the mentally retarded students who were incapable, because of their limited capacities, of adequately to their environment. Muscle fibers and connective tissue are known to affect tenderness. The partitioning of these two structures was first attempted by Lehman as early as 1897 (Wilson, et, al, 1954). Since that time chemical and histological work has been examined extensively to relate tissue components to tenderness. The hydraulics of closed conduit spillways is not as simple as previous thoughts had indicated and is a reason for the renewed interest. Reports of mass and local mortalities caused or influenced by helminth infestations indicate that helminth parasites are natural control agents. Little is known concerning the limiting effects helminths have on ruminant populations. It is known that helminths have on wild ruminant populations. It is known that helminths parasitic in domestic livestock often infest wild ruminants. Swales (1935) and various other workers indicated that serious pathogens in livestock may cause little or no harm in wild ruminants. Thysanosoma actinioides, the fringed tapeworm, which obstructs the bile ducts of sheep, has never been reported as a serious pathogen in wild ruminants. Game …

It is the purpose of this study to develop design criteria for a more efficient system of collection water to assist in satisfying the vast demands of livestock consumption. At present, there is considerable interest in the effects of insecticides upon our wildlife populations. It is well known that chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides are present in tissues and eggs of birds that receive these chemicals in their diets. Some workers, for example Gene11y and Rudd (1956) and DeWitt (1956), studied the effects of different levels of ingested insecticides on the reproduction of game birds. Population distribution and mobility of deer were studied intensively along a 15-mile stretch of the Big Sioux River, and less intensively on an expanse of 1400 square miles in central eastern South Dakota. Objectives were to determine relative population numbers and distribution of deer, the extent of their daily and seasonal movements, and the principal factors influencing these populations and movements, and to test winter hard counts as a population index. Deer were captured in Clover traps or with a Cap-Chur gun and were marked individually with ear tags, ear streamers, and collars. Some deer were tracked by radio telemetry. …

Univalents were studied in the microsporocytes of a triploid sorghum plant which was derived from a selfed haploid. At metaphase I, the frequencies of univalent varied with cell maturity which was judged by anther development. The developmental stages of anthers were E, M, L, VL, and VVL for early, medium, late, very late, and very, very late respectively. Univalents averaged 2.3 per cell at the earliest (E) stage increased to 3.9 per cell at the latest (VVL) stage. A similar tendency was found from L to VVL at anaphase I and telophase I. Membership in the National Forensic League, which emphasizes debate in is membership qualifications, is 228,640. (1) Some debate tournaments have from 25 to 60 schools represented with as many as 100 four-man teams competing. Iodine heptafluoride is one of the two1 known compounds of the molecular type AB7, the other being rhenium heptaflouride. Because of this distinction several experimental investigations have attempted to determine the molecular structures, particularly for IF7 . On the basis of infrared and Raman spectra, Lord et al.2 concluded that the IF7 molecule is a pentagonal bipyramid of D5h symmetry. An electronic diffraction study by LaVilla and Bauer3 suggested a similar structure with four of the five equivalent fluorine atoms staggered alternately above and below the median plane. E.W. Hamilton (1964) reported a serious disease of Southern Corn Rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howaedi Barb. , at the Northern Grain Insect Research Laboratory, Brookings, South Dakota. The disease causing organism was isolated and tentatively identified as a Pseudomonas sp. Several antibiotics were tried in an attempt to rid the colony of this organism but these antibiotics had little effect. In the laboratory, larvae died at about the time they matured. If the infected larvae pupated, the pupae died or a deformed adult would emerge. In addition, females so deformed did not lay eggs. As a result of the disease, the …

The purpose of this study was to examine the self-role perception held by a university director of physical education and athletics and the expectations of the director’s role as held by certain reference groups. An interview schedule containing twenty tasks was constructed by the author. The twenty tasks were hypothetical situations representative of some of the more important tasks involved in administering the department of physical education and athletics.
