General. – The Characaeae is the only extant family of an ancient and unique group of nonvascular aquatic plants which are classified as a separate division, the Charophyta (Groves and Bullock-Webster, 1920; Zaneveld, 1940; Imahori, 1954; Bold, 1957; and others) or as a separate class in the Chlorophyta (Fritsch, 1944; Smith, 1950; Wood and Imahori 1965; and others). Charophytes, like many green algae, are relatively simple haplobiontic plants with zygotic meiosis. However, their complex sexual apparatus, characterized by gametangia enclosed within several sterile cells, distinguishes them from all green algae. The history of anaerobic sludge digestion has shown an ever increasing body of knowledge concerning the causes and operation of anaerobic organic wastes. Two of the earliest methods used in he anaerobic treatment of organicwastes were cesspools and septic tanks. The theory of the design of these units was based upon retaining the waste material and allowing it to undergo bacterial decomposition. An improvement in the anaerobic treatment process was made with the advent of the Imhoff tank. The printer-publisher approach to readability of print has been more intuitive than empirical. They have traditionally stressed the esthetic quality of print, claiming . . . that the softer, freer-flowing oldstyle types, as exemplified by Cloister, Garamond, Granjon, and others, were easier to read in mass and less tiring to the eye than the sharp, precise modern-face letters. There have been many misconceptions about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Or, The Modern Prometheus. One of the greatest errors is that the name of the monster in Shelley’s novel is Frankenstein. The name Frankenstein belongs to the young scientist who created the hideous creature; the name of the creation is simply the Monster. There is also confusion caused by the authoress herself. Mary Shelley, in her 1831 Introduction to Frankenstein and also by her subtitle of the novel, indicated that her book is both Gothic and Promethean in theme. Determination of magnesium in soils has been studied extensively in the last half-century. The classical gravimetric method, based on precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate, has been replaced largely by faster and more convenient methods. Volumetric methods involving titration of Mg with various indicators were the first major changes. With advanced instrumentation, spectrophotometric and flame photometric methods have been used to determine Mg in soil extracts. Studies of the totipotency of cells of various parts of carrot tissues and organ formation by the cultivated carrot leaf cells have been made in this investigation. It is believed that each matured cell, even though appearances differ from cell to cell, still contains the whole set of genes as in a zygote. The differences in appearance are due to the functional genes. This potential of the matured cells to go back to the zygote state is called totipotency. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the soccer “instep kick” technique and the “traditional” kick technique used in place-kicking to determine whether one method is more efficient and the more effective to teach to subjects with no previous kicking experience than the other. Production of silage per acre varies in different areas of the United States. The type of forage used has a large effect on the tonnage of silage produced. Two of the common crops used for high production of silage in South Dakota are corn and forage sorghum. When stored as silage, sorghum has produced as high as 27 tons of feed yielded on and one-half to two times as many tons of silage per acre of corn. Upon relocation of the Brookings sanitary landfill several years ago, local landowners exhibited concern that the quality of their ground water supplies might possibly be deteriorated by such a waste disposal operation. The site was an inactive gravel pit area, with many excavations extending into the shallow water table. This study has stemmed from the results of a number of fertilizer experiments conducted by Carson et al. (12, 31) with spring wheat on Chestnut soils in the North Western part of South Dakota. Results of experiments with phosphorus conducted on non-fallowed land during the years 1961 through 1964 showed that added phosphorus produced a higher percentage yield increase on soils having a low phosphorus produced soil tests as determined by modified Bray No. 1 method (11) than on soils with high P. The relation of color of print to color of background is an important factor to be considered in printing because color does affect legibility. It is the opinion of this investigator that with the increased use of color in all aspects of American life today, relevant research in certain areas of color and color perception should be undertaken. The meat packing industry is decentralizing its processing operations. Many of the large metropolitan packing houses are being abandoned because they cannot readily assimilate the newer, more efficient processing methods due to the high cost of providing such improvements. These plants are being replaced by small, rural installations which are relatively inexpensive to modify. Shorter livestock haul distance are an additional economic advantage to the small plants. One of the most promising concepts for future commercial thermal reactors is the boiling-water, integral-superheat reactors (5) (9). Its economic advantage, based on the assumption that present day turbine throttle conditions can be met, is the combination of two separate effects. The first is the higher thermal efficiency that is inherent in the superheat cycle. With a higher thermal efficiency, less fuels must be consumed for each kilowatt of electricity generated. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a constant work load isometric exercise program on arterial blood pressure and pulse rate. A secondary purpose was to determine the recovery time of the two factors mentioned above. Nine male freshmen students at South Dakota State University volunteered to take part in the study conducted over a six week period during the spring semester of the 1965-66 school year. Research on the effect of buried refuse on ground water quality provides information so that adequate safeguards can be established in such operation, while at the same time allowing maximum use of these disposal sites. Today, with over 1400 communities disposing of their refuse by sanitary landfill techniques (1-104), and many thousands more disposing of this material in open dumps on land without the degree of sanitary control recommended by health agencies, a potential danger to ground water aquifers exists.
