In recent years, the design of notched members has been a challenge to structural, mechanical and aeronautical engineers. Notched members are frequently used in the aircraft, missiles, automobile, and ship building industries where available space is limited to a minimum. More often notches are needed for various other reasons as the passage of electrical wire bundles, hydraulic and air conduits or other structural members. Sometimes a notch serves as a lightening measure or as an inspection access opening. This thesis investigation is a study of the temperature expansion and contraction characteristics of a composite pavement constructed as a continuous pavement. The composite pavement consists of precast, prestressed concrete panels interconnected with grout keys and special panel connectors. A thin layer of asphaltic concrete is placed on the panels to provide a smooth riding surface and protection for the panels. This pavement was developed at South Dakota State University by Emil R. Hargett as a means of providing a more economical pavement for the high traffic volumes and heavy wheel loads that are now carried by our modern highways. …

There are a variety of fins such as rectilinear or parabolic fins protruding from a flat wall, or thin circular or rectangular fins on a tube. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of two progressive weight training programs (Isometric-Isotonic and Isotonic-Isometric) upon selected measures of upper body strength. A secondary purpose was to determine the effect of the two weight training programs upon muscular endurance and resting heart rate. The following procedure was employed: twenty-nine male freshmen students at South Dakota State University volunteered as subjects and were placed in three groups equated by a muscular strength test. Nitrates are absorbed from the soil by plants and serve as a source of nitrogen which is converted into protein and other nitrogen containing compounds. Plants usually contain relatively small amounts of nitrate because it is converted into other nitrogenous compounds rapidly after being absorbed. Under certain conditions some plants may accumulate fairly high concentrations of nitrate. While these high concentrations are not toxic to the plant, animals consuming them may sometimes show symptoms of nitrate toxicity. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a selected progressive resistance running program on circulorespiratory efficiency, power, and free running speed of runners. A selected interval training program was employed to an accepted method of training. Forty-five mail, freshmen students at South Dakota State University were divided into two experimental groups and a control group. The subjects in the experimental groups participated in a six-week training program of either resistance running or interval training. For many years people have equated arsenic or compounds containing arsenic with poison. Inorganic arsenic compounds are used as chemotherapeutic agents as well as poisons. Organic arsenicals were introduced at the start of this century launching modern chemotherapy. The introduction of antibiotics in the 1940’s virtually replaced organic arsenicals in chemotherapy. Solutions of inorganic arsenic compounds are used as tonics for animals and to finish animals for show. With the introduction of numerous and more complex drugs in medicine annually, the metabolism of drugs by liver microsomal enzymes and factors influencing their metabolism has become a subject of increasing interest. A variety of drugs are metabolized by enzyme systems located in liver microsomes (1). Reactions catalyzed by these enzymes include N-dealkylation, deamination, aromatic hydroxylation, ether cleavage, alkyl chain oxidation, azo link cleavage, sulfoxide formation, and glucuronide formation. The importance of nitrogen in an aquatic ecosystem is quite well known. Nitrogen, being originally derived from the atmosphere, enters into a complex cycle involving both the plant and animal components of the ecosystem. The nitrogenous compounds of natural waters may be broken down into the main categories according to their source, either allochthones or autochthonous. Allochthones nitrogen is that derived from the outside sources and includes those compounds carried into the lake by precipitation, by surface runoff containing terrestrial nitrogen, or by the inflow of ground water. When confined, swine are more likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies, especially a deficiency of vitamins. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the development of basketball shooting accuracy as affected by varying goal sizes. Thirty-seven male freshman students at South Dakota State University were divided into three experimental groups and a control group. The present investigation was suggested by the evidence that results obtained from some fertilizer experiments in the northern half of South Dakota related poorly to the soil test values. The yield increases from added phosphorus on fallowed land have not been as well correlated with soil tests as on non-fallowed land. A greater yield increase due to added phosphorus was obtained on fallowed soils having a high phosphorus test than on those having a medium test. Continued study was needed to determine the relationship between crop response to applied phosphorus uptake by plants, and the phosphorus fertility status of these …

A livestock producer will usually experience a louse infestation among his cattle sometime during his career. Most of the cattle that become louse-infested are easily ridded of their lice. There may be, however, one animal in a herd which is particularly susceptible to the lice and becomes chronically infested. Sometimes the susceptible animal may become so heavily infested with lice that death occurs. Tri-plate beams combine versatility, economy, and strength in steel design. These beams have many applications which indicate increased efficiency and economy in long-span plate girder construction. Their structural advantages are almost unlimited. Tri-plate beams are fabricated by welding three different types of steel to form an I-section. Each flange and the web of the section is fabricated out a different yield strength steel. Tentative criteria have been established that specify the maximum noise levels that people can be exposed to for various time periods without receiving permanent hearing damage. In 1960 the city of Brookings purchased a quarter section of land for a sanitary landfill. The site was located approximately two miles south of the city and was an inactive gravel excavation area prior to being used as a refuse disposal site (1-19). In the future, other parts of the quarter section, which are presently being used for farming operations, will be converted to fill areas as a need arises. Condemnation of abscessed portions of swine and beef carcasses is an important economic problem to the meat packing industry and, consequently, to the individual stock producer. The Meat Inspection Division of the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in its summary of activities from 1955 through 1969 (2), reported that the numbers of abscessed portions from cattle and swine have increased (Table 1 and Figure 1). The structure of the livestock industry in the United States has undergone change in the past three decades. Integration, scale economies, changed eating habits, production and processing innovations, decentralization and increased demand for service have all affected the market structure. During this change, however, livestock auctions have remained important outlets for marketing livestock.
