Due to the apparent suppression of turbulent energy dissipation, viscoelastic materials make excellent drag reducing agents. The applications of viscoelastic fluids in this role have been multiplying rapidly since they can be used as drag reducing agents for the transporting and processing of most fluid substances without any ill effects. In the future it may even be possible to reduce the drag on a ship's hull or on a submarine by injecting a water soluble polymer into the boundary layer on the body. Valence-bond theory (or the Reitler-London-Slater-Pauling theory) has been extensively applied to planar molecules and to nonresonating nonplanar structures. Recently, Mullaney made use of symmetry in polyhedral structures to determine how the spin-state functions may combine. This spin-state approach was applied to square, hexagon, tetrahedron, octahedron, and cubic configurations. The calculations indicated no bonding in the cube, octahedron, and tetrahedron; yet such configurations exist in nature. In arriving at the ground state energies for the various geometries, Mullaney assumed that a valance electron is associated with each atom. Multiple-exchange and transfer integrals were neglected. Mannitol, an alcohol of six carbon sugar-mannose, has a molecular weight of 182.17. It has the inability to enter the tricarboxylic acid cycle which makes mannitol a physiological stable compound. This chemical structure, physical and physiological properties of mannitol are listed in figure 1 Barry, (1963). The clinical use of mannitol as a therapeutic agent has been validated many times in the literature. The utilization of mannitol as a prophylactic measure in prevention of acute renal failure following surgery or trauma has been reported by many authorities. A search of literature reveals that there is little concrete evidence of what these services consist and also the mechanics behind their production. The scope of the study synthesizes seventy-nine years of intercollegiate football at South Dakota State University from 1889 to 1967. The study begins with Chapter 1 as the Introduction. Data on the rate of uptake, translocation, expiration, and metabolism of diazinon in alfalfa were obtained. Non-radioactive, C14 ring labeled of C14 ethyl labeled diazinon was applied at the equivalent rate of 1 lb./acre calculated at a 6 in. depth. Absorption was rapid with detectable quantities if diazinon appearing in the plant within the first 24 hours after treatment. Residue levels in the plant remained relatively constant during the period from 9 to 15 days after treatment. Loss of diazinon from soil was rapid with an average of 15% of the applied material remaining 15 days after treatment. No metabolites …

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the starting and performance times of sprinters using the vertical starting blocks with their starting and performance times using the conventional blocks. Thirteen volunteer members of the combined freshman and varsity track teams at South Dakota State University served as both the experimental and control groups. The subjects participated in a six week training program with both the vertical and the conventional blocks being utilized, during which time they met for twelve training sessions. The characteristics of the rachitogenic activity in isolated soybean protein were investigated. Day-old Broad Breasted White and/or Wrolstad Small White turkey poults were used. Levels of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D3 were equal to or greater than National Research Council recommendations. Criteria used for evaluation were body weight gains, tibia ash, serum alkaline phosphate, serum inorganic phosphate and serum calcium. Trays containing dry isolated soybean protein spread to a uniform depth of two and one-half centimeters were placed in an autoclave and brought to 100oC by steaming and then 120oC for a designated period of …

Ecology and behavior of breeding blue-winged teal (Anas discors) were studied in northeastern Day County, South Dakota in 1965 and 1966. Breeding pair use of the wetland habitat and importance of Type 1 ponds in the wetland complex were evaluated. Pair densities of 30.7 and 33.0 per square mile in 1965 and 1966, respectively, were above the 16-year average from 1950-66 and near maximum. Blue-winged teal comprised 46.7 percent of the waterfowl breeding population in 1965 and 51.7 percent in 1966. Number of water areas per square mile through mid-spring 1965 was comparable to the average for the 16-year period …

A profit maximizing linear programming model was used to arrive at optimum plans for a typical ranch in the Willimas-Tetonka-Cavour soil association are of central South Dakota. The typical ranch used for the analysis had 500 acres of cropland and 1056 acres of native grass. Low, medium and high levels of efficiency were assumed in grain crop and livestock production. Forage production was obtained from different management systems on tame grasses and native grasses. Tame grasses included brome-alfalfa, crested wheatgrass, Russian wild rye, and sudan grass. Zinc-deficient corn plants were obtained by raising seedlings in nutrient solution without added zinc. In the absence of zinc, retarded growth was evident after 16 days of germination. Interveinal chlorosis of the leaves was observed on plants grown in this nutrient solution without added zinc. Substitution of tryptophan for zinc in the nutrient solution without added zinc. Substitution of tryptophan for zinc in the nutrient solution during the first 19-day growth period, completely corrected the symptom of retarded growth and the other symptoms of zinc deficiency. This optimal growth and tryptophan was accomplished even with a five-fold reduction of tissue …

Man’s primary concerns have always been the struggle for survival and improvement of his lot. As his numbers increased, he attained greater ability to manipulate his environment. One method of manipulation has been through the use of insecticides. One of the largest uses of insecticides has been in connection with pest control on agricultural lands. Pest control has become of great economical significance within the past decades. Since South Dakota is primarily as agricultural state it has been caught up in this bioeconomical problem. For several years, plants have been screened in the search for compounds that might have a potential use in industry and which presently have no other suitable source (1). During a screening study, Mikolajczak et al. (2) found that crambe (common name for Crambe abyssinica) contained a high percentage of erucic acid. Erucic acid has many potential industrial uses and is currently being obtained from imported rapeseed (J).
