Chlorophyll deficient mutants have been useful in studying the actions of genes determining the submicroscopic structure of the chloroplast and in analyzing the genetic control of the formation of macromolecular cell structures. Normal chlorophyll development is probably controlled by a large number of genetic factors, most of which are inherited as recessives when mutated. Each of the chlorophyll deficiency phenotypic groups seems to be determined by many genes. The chlorophyll mutations were produced. Recently, due to advances in fabrication techniques, it has become possible to manufacture field-effect transistors having electrical properties which make them very attractive for circuit applications. In the bipolar transistor both positive and negative free carriers take part in the functioning of the device; hence the name bipolar. On the other hand, in unipolar devices, the current is carried only by the free majority carriers in the conducting channel and no essential role is played by the small number of minority carriers; hence the name unipolar. There were 1,642,000 beef cows in South Dakota on_ January 1, 1967, which was 14 percent higher than the 1961-65 average (South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, 1967). These cows were valued at $307, 054, 000, a 27 percent increase over the 1961-65 average. There were 390, 000 head of cattle and calves on feed on January 1, 1967, a 33 percent increase over 1961 and a 22 percent increase over the 1961-65 average. The sale of cattle and calves has accounted for 44 percent of the cash farm income in South Dakota for the period 1958-65 and is …

One of the biggest difficulties in the evaluation and control of high quality printed reproductions arises from the fact that no matter how carefully the halftones and tints are made, there is no assurance that their dot areas and densities will be faithfully reproduced on the printed sheet. Image size can be changed in platemaking, contacting or presswork. Assuming that the image or original dot areas get to the press unchanged by intermediate steps, there are still several variables which can affect the image areas on the press. This study was undertaken to compare alternative livestock programs on southeastern South Dakota farms. Variations in hog production have been emphasized since swine feeding accounts for much of the income generated within the community. In addition to the amount of income, stability of income, risk, capital and labor requirements have been compared as limiting factors to be seriously considered. The damage caused by corn rootworms (Coleoptera, Chrysomeiidae) results in extensive losses to corn each year in South Dakota. Thousands of dollars are spent each year for the control of these insects. Kantack (1965} reported during 1963 approximately 496,000 acres of corn were severely damaged by corn rootworms in South Dakota. In 1964 corn rootworm infestation increased causing an estimated three million dollars in damage (Kantack, 1965). At present, serious infestations occur in major corn growing regions of southeastern and western South Dakota. So recognized is Mari Sandoz as a Nebraska author that the governor of Nebraska proclaimed August 23, 1954, “Mari Sandoz Day” in honor of the publication of The Buffalo Hunters.1 But Miss Sandoz has been recognized beyond the confines of her own state. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is widely grown in the Pacific coast and in the southern states of the United States. In the south, its greatest value is to provide winter grazing. During summer months, it either goes dormant, dies out or cannot compete with adapted warm season species. However, tall fescue is considered to have a wide adaptation. One variety of tall fescue with a large acreage is Kentucky 31, which comes into prominence because of its ability to make considerable growth and provide pasturage during the winter and early spring. Effects of dieldrin on penned hen pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) which were the offspring of hens receiving encapsulated dieldrin the previous year were measured. Hens produced by the previous year's control group received 0, 6, 8, or 12 mg of dieldrin per week for 14 weeks. Hens from treated groups received 0 or 6 mg per week. Effects of dieldrin were evaluated by influences upon reproductive success. Mortality occurred in all groups receiving dieldrin, and appeared to be correlated with a reduction in egg production. Dieldrin lowered egg production by reducing food consumption in the 12 mg group and two groups …

Gill nets, trap nets, an otter trawl, and a boom-type electric shocker were utilized to obtain samples of the fish population of Lake Poinsett, South Dakota. The species and size composition of the samples differed significantly with time of season, time of day, location on the lake, and type of gear. Decreased activity following spawning was the apparent cause of a midsummer decline in gill net and trap net catches of black bullhead, black crappie, and white crappie. A late summer increase in the catch of yearling black bullheads, crappies, white bass, carp and bigmouth buffalo was attributed to an …

Investigations of the snapping turtle population on Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge in south-central South Dakota were conducted during 1965-67. Turtles captured by trapping, “hooking”, boxing nests and catching nesting females were measured, marked and released. Turtles were marked by toe-clipping, routing, flagging, and tagging. Attaching a metal tag with a “pop-rivet gun” was the most successful marking technique. Molluscs (95 percent frequency) and vegetation (91 percent frequency) were the most important food items of 22 turtles captured on Valentine Refuge in north-central Nebraska. Bird remains were found in 23 percent of the stomachs. Recapture of marked turtles indicated that individual …

Validity of flock counts, average group-size counts, cannot-net catches, and hunter-bag checks for estimating productivity of lesser snow geese (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) and small Canada geese (Branta cnadensis hutchinsii-parvipes complex) was studied at Sand Lake and Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuges during fall, 1965 and 1966. Age-ratios obtained from flock counts vaired with the number of flocks sampled, wind velocity and amount of sky cover. If adequate sampling sites are selected and weather conditions are standardized, age ratio data from flock counts are of value for assessing productivity. Twenty-one black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) were observed at six different locations in southwest South Dakota between April 1966, and September 1967. All observations were made on black-tailed prairie-dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) towns from 15 to 100 acres in size. Because of the proximity of towns inhabited by ferrets, it was possible that individual animals were observed in more than one location. Three litters of ferrets were studied. Young ferrets were most active during early morning and late evening hours. Ferrets remained as a group until early fall when dispersal evidently occurred. A study was initiated in 1966 to determine food habits and energy utilization of badgers. Digestive tracts were collected in eastern South Dakota from November 1966 to November 1967. A male and a female badger were used for two energy-balance and three digestion trials. Ground squirrels, mice and rabbits were found to be the most important mammal foods eaten. Birds and eggs were only eaten during spring and summer. Toads and grains were important fall foods. Insects were eaten throughout the year but usually only in trace amounts. However, when available, badgers ate large quantities of beetles and ground-nesting bees. …

Seven Streams in the Black Hill of South Dakota were surveyed to determine the influence of suspected sources of pollution on these streams. The sources of pollution included both sewage treatment plant effluents and mining wastes. A comparison of the benthic fauna community below a pollution source to that above it was the primary basis for evaluating the effect of the pollution source on the stream. The results of the benthic fauna samples indicated that the streams surveyed were being polluted. The degree of pollution of each stream was also indicated by these results. Food Habits Of The Sharp-Tailed Grouse (Pedioecetes Phasianellus Jamesi) And The Greater Prairie Chicken (Tymphanuchus Cupido Pinnauts) In Western South Dakota, Bruce A. Renhowe

Summer food preferences were determined for 48 adult sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesi) in a mixed grass habitat. Seasonal foods were determined for 659 sharptails and prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus). Vegetation analysis of four selected study areas indicated significant differences (P<.05) in grassland and brushy draw habitats. Of plant food items, cultivated crops were first in importance on the basis of crop analysis by volumetric comparison for summer, fall, and winter for prairie grouse. Common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) ranked first (72.2 percent) in importance by volume for 63 sharptai8ls during spring. Short-horned grasshoppers (Acrididas) were the most important insect item by volume for summer, fall, and winter. Preference indices for food items taken by 48 adult sharp-tailed grouse during summer indicated selectivity for rose (Rosa arkansana) hips, wolfberry (Symmphoricarpos occidentalis) fruits, clovers (Trifolium spp.), and prickly lettuce (Lactuca Serriola) flower heads. Cultivated crop were fifth in important based on the food-preference index. Short-horned grasshoppers were consumed in approximate proportion to their availability.

Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of 45 lakes in South Dakota were studied from July 1965 to July 1967. Maximum water temperature at the surface reached 28 C. Most of the lakes studied exhibited continuous circulation except when ice covered. Thermocline formation was observed in six of the lakes. Light transmission was influenced by turbidity, and varied greatly within individual lakes and among lakes. Dissolved oxygen concentrations ranged from near saturation to less than the recommended minimum for fish life. All likes studied were basic ranging from a pH of 7.1 to 11.3. The climate, soils, and agricultural practices in eastern South Dakota create unusual characteristics in rivers draining that area. One of the principal rivers of the area is the Big Sioux River. Fishes of this river were first studied about 1900 by Meek and by Everman and Cox (Bailey and Allum, 1962). The alkyl group, R, may migrate intermolecularly. During the migration the R group would exist as a free carbonium ion separated from the parent molecule by solvent. B. The traditional symbols of the Christian life of prayer are readily discoverable in Silex Scintillans, the poetic record of one man's quest for God; they both constitute its deepest meaning and establish its proper context. It is, however, clear that the poet, Henry Vaughan, has embodied these universal symbols in patterns of his own arrangement. South Dakota was the second most rural state in the North Central Region in 1960 with 61 percent of the state’s population living in rural areas. Only North Dakota, with 65 percent rural population, surpassed South Dakota within the North Central Region. Throughout the United States, rural areas have been experiencing a definite loss of people through net out-migration. South Dakota was no exception. Even though the state gained 4 percent in population from 1950 to 1960, there was a total net out-.migration of slightly over 14 percent.
