The technological changes taking place in farming practices today are occurring as a much faster rate than a decade or two ago. In many ways, farmers are applying techniques and practices used in industrial business to their own operations. The average farm size has continually increased and today many farms are enough like a large business that the industrial practices apply directly. The shortage of qualified labor has plagued farmers for some time, and many of the new machines and practices attempt to replace labor with capital as a direct result of these shortages.

This study was undertaken in an attempt to determine to what extent commercial television--an example of mass communication—acts as a contributory agent in the process of reinforcing existing learning experiences, and in an attempt to isolate some of the other factors that may act as mediating influences to reinforcing effects. In the United States the swine industry contributes a great deal to the economy of the corn-belt farmer. On June 1, 1967, the U.S.D.A. Statistical Reporting Service reported 43,642,000 swine in the ten Corn Belt States, which produce three-fourths of the United States pig crop. South Dakota produced approximately 2,700,000 hogs in 1966 with a value of 137.5 million dollars, which is approximately 18.1% of the total farm income. It was the purpose of this study to determine whether videotape instruction utilizing immediate knowledge of results is superior to two of the traditional methods of coaching football. The traditional methods employed in this study were (1) verbal cues and demonstration and (2) verbal cues, demonstration, and a training film. The following procedure was employed: Thirty-three male volunteer freshman students at South Dakota State University were laced into three groups equated by their motor educability and pretest scores on selected football skills • . As industrial management becomes increasingly aware of' the advantages of processing agricultural products near the source of supply, the rate of industrial growth in rural areas correspondingly seems to accelerate. Many rural communities have already experienced the impact of industrial expansion. The type of industry which processes agricultural products produces large quantities of polluted water and, thereby, imposes a significant load upon the wastewater treatment facilities. This increased loading alters, to some extent, the ecology within the treatment processes employed. Most of the basic assumptions for the theory of conductance were originated by Onsager. Debye and Falkenhagen extended the Onsager theory in their studies with the use of alternating current methods. To this day, theories of conductance in electrolytic solutions are founded principally upon developments of these early basic ideas. However, the theoretical treatment in the case of concentrated solutions is still inadequate. This is due to the circumstance that the general molecular theory of irreversible processes is still in a developmental stage. An antibacterial agent is a substance which destroys or suppresses bacterial growth or reproduction. The discovery of the antibacterial properties of the sulfonamides in 1935 by Gerhard Domagk began one of the brightest eras in modern anti-bacterial chemotherapy. These drugs have remained useful as antibacterial agents but the introduction of the antibiotics, particularly penicillin, has made the sulfonamides less popular. However, the sulfonamides are effective and are still used today. Antibacterial agents are not characterized by one chemical grouping or a particular mode of action. Phenols and alcohols, for example, act by denaturing protein. Others such as arsenic and the …

Gram positive, club shaped, pleomorphic bacilli with or without catalase activity are frequently isolated from abscessed clinical materials (Smith and Bodily, 1968). These organisms may be aerobic to microaerophilic to anaerobic (Wilson and Miles, 1964) and are usually regarded as Diphtheroids. Diphtheroids have been defined by Burdon (1958) as members of the genus Corynebacterium other than the diphtheria bacillus Burrows et al . (1963) state that diphtheroids are "microorganisms morphologically similar to and frequently indistinguishable from the diphtheria bacillus." Biever (1967) included as diphtheroid all of the organisms morphologically similar to the genus Actinomyces. Smith et al . (1964) stated …

It has been recognized that many convection heat transfer problems involve internal heat generation. Nuclear fuel elements, chemically reactive liquids and transparent shell solar energy collectors are a few examples. Theoretically, this type of problem has not been studied extensively. Lumsdaine solved the internal heat generation problem with constant temperature boundary conditions in spherical coordinates. The purpose of this thesis is to follow Lumsdaine's analysis to study those problems where internal heat generation is a function of radius. The governing partial differential equation in spherical coordinates is of the second order, non-homogeneous and has variable coefficients. The non-homogeneity arises from …

A wind tunnel was designed by the author for studying the aerodynamic properties of porous plates; it was constructed and installed in the Heat Power Laboratory, Mechanical Engineering, South Dakota State University. With a total pressure tube, the velocity profile throughout the boundary layer and the average shear stress at the wall were determined. A Preston tube was used to measure-local shear stress. There are only limited experimental data available on the relation between roughness and shear stress for flow over porous surfaces with injection or suction. Because of instrumentation problems, it proved difficult to obtain data in the sublayer. …

Afforestation of the Missouri River hills along the Great Lakes of South Dakota's reservoirs is a varied problem. Most of the flood plain vegetation, of which Eastern cottonwood, Populus deltoides Bartr is the dominant, has been flooded by the impoundments. The new, shores are mostly grasses of which the potential natural vegetation according to Kuchler (1964) would be in the Agropyron-Stipa association. Hardwood forest, mostly the Ulmus Fraxinus type, exists along tributaries of the Missouri. Organisms referred to as "fecal streptococci" or "enterococci" have been studied as possible indicators of pathogenic bacteria of fecal origin since their· discovery. In Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (1957), the "enterococci" are classified as Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus faecalis var. liquefaciens, Streptococcus faecalis var. zyrnogenes and Streptococcus durans. Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus equinus do not meet all the criteria of the enterococcus group. However, they are found in great numbers in certain fecal material. These organisms, and the”enterococci" are collectively referred to as "fecal streptococci." The unavailability of satisfactory methods and of selective media has prevented the acceptance of these …
