The Theory Of Elective Affinities In The Dramatic Love Poems Of Robert Browning, Harry C. Tartt

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1969, examines Robert Browning's treatment of romantic love in his dramatic poems through the theoretical lens of elective affinities, which is a concept borrowed from chemistry and first applied to human relationships by Johann Wolfgang Goethe in his 1809 novel Wahlverwandtschaften (Elective Affinities). The study traces the origins of the chemical theory of elective affinities from seventeenth-century analytical chemists including Hermann Boerhaave and Torbern Bergmann through Goethe's literary application of the concept to four lovers whose passions operate as blind, irresistible forces …

Ecological And Trophic Distribution Of Pesticides In Lack Poinsett, South Dakota, Michael Robert Hannon

Ecological and trophic distributions of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota were studies. Components of the ecosystem analyzed were water, bottom sediment, zooplankton, benthic algae, crayfish, aquatic insects and fish. Concentrations of aldrin, DDD, DDE, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, methoxychlor, and toxaphene were determined by gas chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. DDT and its metabolites, DDD and DDE, were the highest residues detected in all trophic levels examined. Heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrine, dieldrin, and lindane were present in the majority of sample types, while neither endrin nor methoxyshlor was detected above analytical confidence limits in any …

Reactions of rhenium(V) chloride with triphenylphosphine, triphenylphosphine oxide, and pyridine were investigated, using various solvents. It was found that both the amount of water present and the age of the rhenium(V) chloride played important roles in determining the products formed. The number and kind of products varied with the solvent used, with the more polar solvents giving mostly or all monomeric species. Rhenium(V) chloride and triphenylphosphine in acetonitrile gave tetrachlorobis (triphenylphosphine)rhenium(IV). Rhenium(V) chloride in anhydrous acetorie reacted with pyridine to give dioxotetrakis( pyridine)rhenium(V) chloride dihydrate. Sources for the oxygen and water in the complex are considered. Pine Seedling Survival And Growth Related To Moisture Retention Of Eight Texas Forest Soils, Curtis Eneim

Greenhouse studies showed that loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedling survival under severe drought and height growth under favorable and unfavorable moisture conditions were related to moisture retention values of eight East Texas soil types. Soil moisture retention constants nearer to field capacity tensions may give better indications of survival and development in droughty areas than moisture constants nearer to wilting point tensions. Likewise, water consumption (evapotranspiration) during favorable moisture conditions and during moisture stress was related to soil moisture retention characteristics. Costly reforestation failures can be avoided by examining the soil moisture retention characteristics of prospective planting sites to …
