A Multi-Item Inventory Model, Ramakrishnan Krishnan Jan 1971

A Multi-Item Inventory Model, Ramakrishnan Krishnan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last fifteen years there has been a rapid growth of interest in scientific inventory control; the use of mathematical models to obtain rules for operating inventory systems. The subject has attracted such wide interest that today every serious student in the Industrial Engineering and related fields is expected to have had some experience with inventory models. Originally, the development of inventory models had practical applications as an immediate objective. Today, inventory models are being developed at many different levels, ranging from the direct application in practical problems to the development of abstract mathematical models. The earliest derivation of …

Study Of An Automatic Sphygmomanometer System, James B. Morgan Jan 1971

Study Of An Automatic Sphygmomanometer System, James B. Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A simple and dependable method of automatically measuring blood pressure indirectly would be of great help to the medical profession. An electronic system to implement the measurement of blood pressure using a double cuff method is presented. The scheme is to determine diastolic pressure from the amplitude of the difference signal obtained by subtracting the pulse wave observed in one cuff from that of the other, and to determine systolic pressure from the amplitude of the pulse wave observed in the cuff furthermost from the heart. Although the system is electronically practical, the results obtained from this system show that …

Bionomics To Two Greenbug Biotypes In Response To Low Temperatures On Winter Wheat, John E. Kvenberg Jan 1971

Bionomics To Two Greenbug Biotypes In Response To Low Temperatures On Winter Wheat, John E. Kvenberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been much research since the tum of the century devoted to the biology of the greenbug (Schizaphis graminum Rond.) and the feeding damage to winter wheat caused by this insect. In recent years a new green bug biotype has emerged that can with stand high temperatures and produces economic damage on sorghum during the late summer months. In 1968, several million acres of grain and forage sorghum were extensive by damaged by the greenbug in the Great Plains states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, and South Dakota. In the northern Great Plains, a limited number of …

Motivating Factors In The Purchase Of Specific Clothing Items By Selected Groups Of Men In South Dakota, Sandra Schroder Moore Jan 1971

Motivating Factors In The Purchase Of Specific Clothing Items By Selected Groups Of Men In South Dakota, Sandra Schroder Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivating factors that influenced a selected group of men in South Dakota in purchase of clothing. The returns were grouped so that buying practices of men in East River and West River were compared, and buying practices of men from urban and rural areas were compared. Changes in men's clothing have begun to change at an accelerating rate compared with relatively slow changes that took place in the past. These changes have come in many forms such as new colors, new styles, and new fabrics. Because of these innovations in men's …

Estimation Of An Economic Social Return To The Investment In The Undergraduate Education Of One Graduating Class Of A University, Ronald N. Lafferty Jan 1971

Estimation Of An Economic Social Return To The Investment In The Undergraduate Education Of One Graduating Class Of A University, Ronald N. Lafferty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colleges and universities compete for financial resources with societal needs such as defense, transportation, health, welfare, and recreation. Any expenditure for education has an alternative use in some other activity. Both education and the alternative activity would produce financial and non-financial benefits. Comparison of the non-financial benefits must almost always be subjective. The purpose of this study is to make possible an objective comparison of the financial benefits. Empirical estimates of the financial benefits are available expenditures in most activities; however, no estimates of the financial benefits are available for specific investments in education. The decision maker is forced to …

Study Of A 41.6 Kv Distribution System, Rene Meka Monneyang Jan 1971

Study Of A 41.6 Kv Distribution System, Rene Meka Monneyang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A load study is the determination of the voltage, current, power, and power factor at various points in an electric network under existing or contemplated conditions of normal operation. The following load study deals with the 41.6 KV distribution system of the City of Brookings, South Dakota. This system has recently been completed and placed in operation. Before installation of this system, the City of Brookings was served by a central steam generating plant operating at 4160 volts in a radial manner. When power became available from the USBR (United States Bureau of Reclamation), it was decided that it was …

The Effect Of Age, Preparation Method, Storage Time, And Storage Temperature On The Palatability And Fatty Acids Of Freeze-Dried Pheasant, Shirley J. Mittan Jan 1971

The Effect Of Age, Preparation Method, Storage Time, And Storage Temperature On The Palatability And Fatty Acids Of Freeze-Dried Pheasant, Shirley J. Mittan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Freeze-dehydration is a relatively new method being used in food preservation. Dehydration of food is an ancient procedure, but the freezing of food has come into common use since the turn of the century. The combined procedure of freezing and dehydration is a new innovation. Most of the work on freeze-dehydration has been done within the last two decades. Freeze-dehydration is a process in which the foodstuff is frozen; while still in the frozen state, the moisture is withdrawn under vacuum. An advantage of this method of processing is that the moisture content of the foodstuff can be reduced to …

Quality And Quanity Of Surface Runoff From A Cropland Area In South Dakota During 1970, Terry Allen Mccarl Jan 1971

Quality And Quanity Of Surface Runoff From A Cropland Area In South Dakota During 1970, Terry Allen Mccarl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past, pollution from agricultural sources has received far less attention than pollution from industrial and municipal sources. Point sources of agricultural pollution such as livestock confinement feeding operations have received more attention by researchers than the runoff from cultivated cropland. The 1967 Conservation Needs Inventory performed by the United States Government reported 1,438 million acres of non-federal rural land, including 437.6 million acres of cultivated cropland. Every year 500,000 acres of cropland are lost from productive use as cropland due to soil erosion. An average of one million acres of urban land and other built-up areas such as …

The Tension Between Mysticism And Erotic Sensibility In Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market", Linda H. Marquardt Jan 1971

The Tension Between Mysticism And Erotic Sensibility In Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market", Linda H. Marquardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Goblin Market," Christina Rossetti's best-known narrative poem, appeared in 1862 as the leading poem in Goblin Market and Other Poems, a volume designed to attract the Christmas trade. Since then, the few scholars who have ventured to regard Miss Rossetti as something more than Dante Gabriel's sister have concerned themselves with varied and in-depth critical interpretations of "Goblin Market." William Rossetti, brother and biographer of the poet, reports that he had often heard Christina say that she meant nothing profound by the fairy tale and that "Goblin Market" should not be taken as an apologue. Disregarding Christina Rossetti's own comment, …

Synthesis And Room Temperature Nmr Analysis Of Dimethylpiperazines, David L. Lyle Jan 1971

Synthesis And Room Temperature Nmr Analysis Of Dimethylpiperazines, David L. Lyle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A survey of the literature has been made on the syntheses of 2,5- and 2,6-dimethylpiperazines. Several new N-substituted dimethylpiperazines were subsequently prepared. These are: cis-2,6-dimethyl-4-mesyl-piperazine, cis-2,5-dimethyl-l,4-dimesylpiperazine, and trans-2,5-dimethyl-l,4-dimesylpiperazine (Jl). Attempted syntheses of trans-2,6-dimethylpiperazine (!±,) are also discussed. Room temperature nmr analysis of these and other previously known piperazine isomers supports the hypothesis that the more energetically equivalent equilibrating conformers are the more compact the AB portion of the ABX pattern of the piperazine ring protons. This technique provides a convenient method for suggesting the configuration and conformation at room temperature of the seventeen isomers and derivatives that were studied. Piperazine …

A Survey Of The Relationship Among Occupational Information And Career Choices Of General College Students And Printing Management Students At South Dakota State University And Employees Of Fetter Printing Company, Dennis Robert Lundgren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I believe that the Graphic Arts industry will in the future face a severe manpower shortage if it fails to attract new blood, young men and women, into the field. This possible manpower shortage led me to study the reasons why people entered the Graphic Arts industry. People seem to reject the Graphic Arts industry as an occupational choice for several reasons which encouraged me to undertake this study. One of these reasons, the fact that people did not know of the opportunities in the field, was my primary reason. A second possible reason was that these people very seldom …

A Study Of The Thematic Importance Of Nine Female Characters Of The English Mystery Plays, Linda Lee Boyd Jan 1971

A Study Of The Thematic Importance Of Nine Female Characters Of The English Mystery Plays, Linda Lee Boyd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As indicated by the title and by the large proportion of pages devoted to the subject, transformation of variables is the primary topic of this thesis. The transformation of partially overlapping, correlated, two-dimensional, Gaussian distributed random variates to partially overlapping, independent, one-dimensional, Cauchy distributed random variates involves a reduction in dimensionality by one. Consequently, the equation defining the receiver is simplified, and the expressions for predicting the classification error are easier to formulate. The equation required to effect this transformation is z=Y1/Y2 , where Y1 , Y 2 are the standardized correlated Gaussian variates and z …
