A Feasibility Model For Farm Supply Firm Mergers, Donald R. Schwartz Jan 1971

A Feasibility Model For Farm Supply Firm Mergers, Donald R. Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is currently witnessing a revolutionary change in its elevator-farm supply industry. Technology applied in all phases of the industry -- production, processing, and distribution -- has had an impact upon the structure of the industry. Some of the changes taking place within the industry have been fostered by changes in other sectors of the economy. Employment opportunities and increasing wage rates have provided many marginal firm operators more favorable alternatives outside the elevator-farm supply business. Simultaneously, economic growth has encouraged new investments in larger grain handling and farm supply firms, thus hastening the adoption of technological developments. These …

The Narrow Room : A Critical Study Of The Sonnet Sequences Of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Ann O. Boultinghouse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The second decade of the twentieth century brought to American Literature a renaissance in poetry which affected not only the course of American letters b􂨻t also the course of American culture as well. The beginning of this renaissance is marked by the publication of the Lyric Year in 1912 which purported to be a collection of new, fresh, and arresting poems by contemporary poets, both known and obscure. In this volume and into this renaissance appeared the teen-aged Edna St. Vincent Millay with her youthful "Renascence." Although the poem did not win a prize, over which there was an eruption …

Parasites Of Shrews In Brookings County, South Dakota, Gary D. Collins Jan 1971

Parasites Of Shrews In Brookings County, South Dakota, Gary D. Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The short-tailed shrew, Blarina brevicauda, and the masked shrew, Sorex cinereus, are the two representatives of the shrew family in Brookings County, South Dakota. These mammals, by the very fact that they are insectivores, are potential hosts for a varied fauna of parasites, as insects serve as intermediate hosts for a number of helminths. Although shrews are insectivores, they are omnivorous. An opportunist, the shrew will consume an abundance of any available food. They have been known to feed on a bird's nest (Horvath, 1965) and attack a garter snake (Byle, 1965). Hair from various small mammals was found in …

Crystal And Molecular Structures Of Bis-Tetramethylammonium Hexabromouranate (Iv) And Bis-Tetramethylammonium Dioxotetrabromouranate (Vi), Donald Dean Dickerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work was to study bond lengths in uranium halide complexes by means of x-ray crystallography. In order to prepare the uranium complexes, a synthesis had to be found that would allow uranyl acetate to be used as the starting material. Two complexes, bis-tetramethylammonium hexachlorouranate (IV) and bis-tetramethylammonium dioxotetrachlorouranate (VI), were chosen for crystal studies. U--Br bond lengths were determined for each complex. Carbon and nitrogen were located for the U(IV) complex. A full matrix least squares refinement and electron density maps were used to find atom and temperature parameters.

A Study To Determine The South Dakota School Districts' Information Programs, Policies, And Attitudes, Donald A. Clyde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are a great many problems in education today. One of them is the growing reluctance of the public to support the high cost of education. Communications and public relations are considered to be helpful tools in explaining school needs and policy to the public. But are the schools in South Dakota making a rational use of these tools? To do so, a public relations-community relations communication policy ls needed. This thesis will evaluate the public relations policy of South Dakota schools--the policy of communicating with the public. It will focus on the school district policy. Included in the discussion …

An Investigation Of Subscriber Attitudes Toward The Clark County Courier, Duane Anthony Dolney Jan 1971

An Investigation Of Subscriber Attitudes Toward The Clark County Courier, Duane Anthony Dolney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the editor of a weekly newspaper can use the size of his subscription list and the letters to the editor to determine how area residents feel about his newspaper, the amount of information acquired and the accuracy of such information are limited. Another determinant which the editor could use is feedback the employees of the newspaper receive from the subscribers and the other residents of the community. It was through this feedback that some dissatisfaction with the Clark County Courier was noticed. The author of this paper began working for The Clark County Courier as advertising manager in June, …

Prediction Of Beef Palatability Factors And Relationships Between Live And Carcass Traits, Richard J. Berns Jan 1971

Prediction Of Beef Palatability Factors And Relationships Between Live And Carcass Traits, Richard J. Berns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The agricultural industry or South Dakota is primarily based on the beer cow and her products. Cattle feeders had 275, 000 head of cattle and calves on feed on July 1, 1970, a 2 percent increase over July 1, 1969. South Dakota has about 1, 719, 000 beef cows which is 38 percent more than a decade ago. The state can continue to increase beef production in many ways such as retaining mare cows to produce feeders, increasing calving percentage, using crossbreeding, or feeding cattle to heavier weights. Increased carrying capacity through irrigation and management may be another avenue to …

A Theoretical Investigation Of Shock Wave Stability In Sonic Inlets, Assem A. Fathy Jan 1971

A Theoretical Investigation Of Shock Wave Stability In Sonic Inlets, Assem A. Fathy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A theoretical investigation of the shock wave stability applicable to "sonic" and supersonic inlets is presented. It is assumed that the boundary layer remains attached and that the principal sources of instability are the acoustic wave reflections from the shock wave and the face. The analysis is based on linearized one-dimensional flow theory and involves the solution of the wave equation with variable coefficients. The solution is obtained by series expansion. The results suggest that shock stability is mainly dependent on the shock strength and to a certain extent on the area distribution. For a given geometry, increasing the shock …

Fracture Initiation In Viscoelastic Solids, James A. Elsing Jan 1971

Fracture Initiation In Viscoelastic Solids, James A. Elsing

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The subject of this paper is to derive generalized analytical expressions to predict fracture in viscoelastic polymer materials. To aid in understanding behavioral characteristics of viscoelastic materials, a basic background of viscoelastic models and their responses are presented and briefly discussed. Fracture from two types of cracks are considered; the first 1s a penny-shaped crack in a three-dimensional solid and the second is a crack the thickness of the material in a two-dimensional solid. Except for the constants, the same equations describe fracture in both 2-D and 3-D solids. The fracture equations were developed using expressions from Sneddon, Wnuk, Griffith …
