The Wooded Soils Of Southeast South Dakota : Their Morphology And Genesis, Ronald A. Torkelson
The Wooded Soils Of Southeast South Dakota : Their Morphology And Genesis, Ronald A. Torkelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Southeast South Dakota has a macro-climate environment favorable to grass. It is a natural prairie area where moisture generally is limiting for trees unless natural landscape conditions shift the microclimate in a cool-moist directions. The Newton Hills area provides these special conditions. A dissected plateau with local relief measured in hundreds of feet slopes steeply in a northeasterly direction to the trench of the Big Sioux River. This northeast-facing slope escapes the direct rays of the sun and an environment more cool and moist than the adjacent prairie upland is formed. Relict trees have persisted in these areas and under …
A Separator For Fine Sediments, Jung-Chiun Sun
A Separator For Fine Sediments, Jung-Chiun Sun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the field of sedimentation, researchers have been frequently confronted with the problem of separating fine sediments into different sizes. During the last two decades, much effort has been extended on the size analysis of sediments and numerous reports on methods of sediment size analysis have been published. Among these various methods, sieve analysis and V.A. Tube analusis developed by the U.S. Geological Survey have been found to be quite adequate for the analysis of coarse and medium sand of diameter larger than 0.1 mm (1). For fine sand analysis, some methods, such as decantation, elutriation, and incremental (2), are …

Buckling Loads For Partially Embedded Piles, David Allen Wahlstrom
Buckling Loads For Partially Embedded Piles, David Allen Wahlstrom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Piles are common structural elements used to transmit loads through weak or compressible surface soils to lower, more suitable soil strata. They are relatively small diameter shafts that are forced into the ground. Typical examples of pile utilization can be found at nearly any site where a major structure is being constructed. Many waterfront structures are built on partially embedded piles. In this case, the pile transfers the load of the structure to the lower soil strata and also serves as a column for the portion of the structure above the mud line. Many bridges and buildings are also supported …

Horizontal Resistance To Leaf Rust In Spring Wheat, Mayo E. Wetterberg Jr.
Horizontal Resistance To Leaf Rust In Spring Wheat, Mayo E. Wetterberg Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stem rust, Puccina graminis tritici Eriks. And Henn., and leaf rust, Puccinia recondite Rob. Ex Desm., have been major diseases of wheat in the northern great plains for many years. As a result of several severe wheat rust epidemics within the past 50 years, much effort has been directed toward control of these diseases. Resistant varieties have been introduced over the years, but wheat rusts remain serious problems, causing losses to farmers in spite of breeding efforts. Since the discovery that both stem and leaf rust exist in several biological forms called races (18, 25), wheat breeding has been develop …
Finite-Difference Solution For Flow Over A Rough Porous Plate With Mass Transfer, Hwai-Way Wen
Finite-Difference Solution For Flow Over A Rough Porous Plate With Mass Transfer, Hwai-Way Wen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study of flow over a plate with surface blowing or suction has become very important during recent years due to the increased interest in modifying the temperature or flow characteristics of the boundary layer. Many investigators have studied laminar and turbulent boundary layer flows over smooth surfaces; however, in practical applications, especially under high free stream velocity, the surface cannot be considered hydraulically smooth, and the fluid in turbulent rather than laminar. In this study, the numerical solution for turbulent flow over a rough porous plate with variable surface mass transfer is presented.

Of the many anti-epileptic agents available, the most commonly used compounds can be divided into four categories: the barbiturates and related drugs, the hydantoins, the oxazolidines and the succinimides. Because of the possibility of concurrent use of the compounds in the treatment of epilepsy, it would be advantageous to have some information concerning the effect that each group has individually on microsomal enzyme systems before therapy in instituted. This information would enable the clinician to more adequately predict drug response thus reducing dosage regimen adjusting time and also possibly reducing the incidence of adverse reactions or interactions. The effect of …
Experimental Investigation Of Shock Boundary Layer Interaction For Two-Dimensional And Axisymmetric Flow, A. Shawki Zahran
Experimental Investigation Of Shock Boundary Layer Interaction For Two-Dimensional And Axisymmetric Flow, A. Shawki Zahran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A supersonic wind-tunnel has been constructed using an 8 inch by 10 inch single stage jet vacuum ejector with a capacity of handling 0.4 lb/sec air at 4 inches Hg absolute suction pressure. A Toepler Schlieren system with 10-inch diameter parabolic mirrors has been set up for flow pattern visualization. The same apparatus was developed to obtain multi-colored views of the flow pattern. That was accomplished by placing an equilateral prism in front of the light source located at the focal plane of the first parabolic mirror. A spectrum was thus produced at the focal plane of the second parabolic …

A Study Of The Endogenous Electron Donors For Nitrogen Fixation By Cell-Free Extracts Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae M5al (Aerobacter Aerogenes M5al), Elisabeth Yi-Jan Wu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biological nitrogen fixation, the mechanism of the enzymatic conversion of the inert nitrogen gas into amino acids in the cytoplasm of the microorganism has puzzled many scientists for decades. The recent discovery of some free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria has encouraged the investigation of this mechanism. A big step taken in the rapid elucidation of this mechanism was the first reproducible cell-free nitrogen-fixing system from Clostridium pasteurianum successfully obtained by Carnahan et al. (9) in 1960. In the following decade, reproducible cell-free systems were demonstrated with the strict aerobe, Azotobacter vinelandii (4), facultative anaerobic Bacillus polymyxa (16) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (31) and …

A Comparison Of An Individualized English Program With A Traditional English Program In Desmet High School, Beverly Jean Wolkow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the incredible amount of information being uncovered each day and with the emphasis swinging from subject-centered curriculum to child-centered curriculum, education is in turmoil. Educators realize students cannot learn all the facts needed for the future. Since many people will have to retrain for new jobs several times in their lifetimes, students today probably cannot even learn enough for continuous occupation. To meet these challenges, educators have been searching for new methods of organization and instruction. One such method is individualized instruction. The purpose of initiating and studying a program of individualized instruction in English was to establish the …

The third study was initiated with 20 week old pullets and terminated when they were 52 weeks old. Feeding purified diets resulted in slower chick growth and lower mature body weights of hens. Selenium additions of 2.0 ppm resulted in …
Screening Electrocardiograms Using Hotelling's Method Of Principle Components, Edward G. Schwartz
Screening Electrocardiograms Using Hotelling's Method Of Principle Components, Edward G. Schwartz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Considerable use is presently being made of computers to classify electrocardiograms (ECGs) into various heart defect categories. An example of such a program is the "Electrocardiographic Analysis Program" developed jointly by the Mayo Clinic and IBM. In one of Dr. Caceres published reports, he tells of using a computer program which involves 5,000 instructions. Dr. Caceres does not say whether this is a commercial program or one of bis own. His description does place this program in the same general category as IBM's. These programs have the common criteria of examining the ECG for the same information that a cardiologist …
Field Population And Flight Activity Of Three Hippodamia Species In Eastern South Dakota, Gene Allen Olson
Field Population And Flight Activity Of Three Hippodamia Species In Eastern South Dakota, Gene Allen Olson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Twenty-four coccinellid species, excluding the genus Scymnus, were collected in eastern South Dakota during the 1969-70 growing seasons. Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville, H. tredecimpunctata L., and H. parenthesis (Say), were the most abundant species found in alfalfa and small grains. Reproduction of H. convergens and H. tredecimpunctata occurred in alfalfa, oats, spring and winter wheat, and corn. Field observations indicated that the reproductive cycle required approximately 2½ weeks. The pea aphid, Macrosiphum pisi (Harris), the English grain aphid, M. avenae (Fabricius), and the corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), appeared to be suitable food for these 3 Hippodamia species; the brown …
Selected Determinants Of The Hiring Policy Of Employers Relative To Businesses In Five Counties Of South Dakota, Don Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Description of the Problem For nearly everyone in our society, remunerative work has provided a meaningful role. It also provided an avenue for the attainment of respect, dignity, and the essentials of the "good life." On the other hand, unemployment has necessitated reliance on programs for the indigent and unemployed. The central focus of this study was the Janus-headed problem of unemployment and underemployment. The approach was oriented to a level of organization which has not previously been adequately explored. Unlike most of the studies which have attempted to meliorate the exigencies of unemployment, this study focused on the needs …
A Conceptual Analysis Of Alienation In Current Theory And Research, Lanny Aron Neider
A Conceptual Analysis Of Alienation In Current Theory And Research, Lanny Aron Neider
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the assumed relationship between theory and research with respect to alienation. The basic hypothesis of this study is that empirical research on alienation would be influenced by existing theoretical formulations on the topic. It is argued that Melvin Seaman's 1959 conceptualization of alienation would constitute the major theoretical influence inasmuch as it alone provided a systematic set of researchable meanings. To test this basic hypothesis, four sub-hypotheses were developed: (1) Based upon Seeman's five dimensional scheme one should expect a fairly equal emphasis on the examination of all dimensions of alienation in …
