Comparison Of South Dakota State University Graduates Of The Home Economics And Of Other Curricula With Respect To Family Living Variables, Janice Hofer Grimm Mar 1972

Comparison Of South Dakota State University Graduates Of The Home Economics And Of Other Curricula With Respect To Family Living Variables, Janice Hofer Grimm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Marriage and the family as we have known them in the past are currently undergoing greater change at a more accelerated rate than ever before in history. Many writers concerned with the family and social problems would lead us to wonder if marriage is disappearing. There is an increase in communal living, exchange of marriage partners, and "open" campus dormitories. The divorce rate has been climbing steadily for a number of years. But when one looks more deeply into communal life for example, it is discovered that the duration of communal living is generally about two years. A study done …

Untrastructural Morphology Of Bovine Herpesvirus Infected Cells, Carol Ann Larson Mar 1972

Untrastructural Morphology Of Bovine Herpesvirus Infected Cells, Carol Ann Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus has been shown to cause considerable economic losses in the South Dakota cattle industry. On the average, one in ten cattle abortions are caused by this virus. This amounts to approximately $250,000 lost each year by South Dakota cattlemen. There is no way of determining the economic loss due to the respiratory infections also caused by this virus. As is the case with most virus diseases, control requires extensive knowledge of its biological, physical and chemical properties. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of IBR virus on the ultrastructure of a bovine …

Comparative Analysis Of Numerical And Integral Methods For Calculating Turbulent Compressible Flow, Ronald James Greve Mar 1972

Comparative Analysis Of Numerical And Integral Methods For Calculating Turbulent Compressible Flow, Ronald James Greve

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The calculation of boundary layer parameters requires knowledge of the turbulent shear which, with our present incomplete knowledge of turbulence, must rely on empirical relationships. Another well-known problem is the non-linearity of the boundary layer equations. Early calculations rely on the well-known Von Karman integral equations but with the advent of the large digital computers, finite difference methods are presently commonly used. For calculation of the incompressible boundary layer there are two popularly used methods. A comprehensive comparison of this type of approximate method assuming different velocity profiles is given by Taylor. The second is a purely numerical method using …

The Stereochemistry Of 5-Chloromethyl-5-Methyl-2-Oxo-2-Phenoxy-1,3,2- Dioxaphosphorinan And The Reaction Of Phenoxide Ion With 2-Chloro-5-Chloromethly-5-Methyl-2-Oxo-1,3,2-Dioxaphosphorinan, Samuel Dean Larsen Mar 1972

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary objective of the research outlined in Part One is to assign the stereochemistry of some phosphorus containing heterocycles. In order to avoid confusion over nomenclature, most of the compounds described in this thesis will be named as derivatives of the 1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinan ring. For compounds described in the Experimental section, the designation of cis and trans will be assigned according to the arrangement of the phosphoryl oxygen at position 2 in relation to the chloromethyl group at C-5. Axial (ax) and equatorial (eq) designations will also refer to the chloromethyl group at 5, unless otherwise stated. Thus, the axial …

A Comparative Economic Analysis Of Representative Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In The Eastern Missouri Alope Area Of South Dakota, Ronald C. Graham Mar 1972

A Comparative Economic Analysis Of Representative Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In The Eastern Missouri Alope Area Of South Dakota, Ronald C. Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sizable annual variation in agricultural production and income has long been an obstacle to long-range, agriculturally orientated economic planning and development in the Northern Great Plains states. Paramount as a cause of this obstacle is the inconsistency of crop yields primarily due to annual fluctuations, sometimes severe, in the quantity and seasonal distribution of rainfall. Irrigation is the logical solution for stabilizing agricultural production and income. The development of sprinkler irrigation has the advantages of little or no requirement for land-shaping and of allowing rather exact application of uniform quantities of water. As such it has been considered for some …

The Role Of Agriculture In South Dakota's Economy : An Approach To Analysis, Mahlon George Lang Mar 1972

The Role Of Agriculture In South Dakota's Economy : An Approach To Analysis, Mahlon George Lang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dependency of the state's economy upon the agricultural sector demands that economic research and public policy with respect to agriculture be based upon a more refined understanding of the magnitude and nature of the relationship between the farm and nonfarm economies. Ideally, the earliest stages of decision-making in government grow out of carefully developed research into the likely outcomes of alternative public policy decisions. At the macroeconomic level, such research requires a firm grasp of the complex chain of events which will occur as a result of changes in policy toward agriculture. At present, this chain of events is only …

Automatic Control Of A Closed Conduit Cutback Irrigation System, Richard E. Kraft Mar 1972

Automatic Control Of A Closed Conduit Cutback Irrigation System, Richard E. Kraft

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The total supply of water on the earth today is about the same as it was thousands of years ago. It is estimated that by the year 2020, 1,380 billion gallons of water will be used every day to satisfy the needs of 468 million people in the United States. Priorities will therefore have to be established to allocate the limited supply of water among the alternative users. One criterion, based on an economic analysis of the user, for making the allocation decision is presented by Reynolds. Unfortunately, agriculture has been awarded a rather low priority level as compared to …

Estimation Of Plant S And Zn Concentration By Soil Test Correlation, Douglas Darrel Koth Mar 1972

Estimation Of Plant S And Zn Concentration By Soil Test Correlation, Douglas Darrel Koth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sulfur and Zn are two elements essential for plant growth. Deficiencies of these two plant nutrients occur commonly in many areas of the world. Zinc deficiency symptoms were noted in corn in South Dakota during the late nineteen fifties. In the summer of 1970, S deficiency symptoms appeared in corn (Zea mays L.) grown on sandy soils in Marshall County, South Dakota. Zinc deficiencies of corn occur more often when corn is grown on soils that are characterized by one or more of the following properties: sandy texture, low organic matter, severe past erosion, leveled for irrigation, high lime level, …

Tissue Ammonium Nitrogen In Sheep Tongue, Liver And Kidney Following Death By Ammonia Intoxication, Dale L. Jaquette Mar 1972

Tissue Ammonium Nitrogen In Sheep Tongue, Liver And Kidney Following Death By Ammonia Intoxication, Dale L. Jaquette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urea was introduced as an economical nonprotein nitrogen source for ruminant animals. In the gastrointestinal tract, urea is hydrolyzed in the presence of bacterial urease to ammonia and carbon dioxide. The liberated ammonia is utilized by rumen microorganisms for amino acid synthesis. Ammonia not used by microorganisms diffuses through the gastrointestinal lining and is transported to the liver by blood, where enzymes synthesize urea by combining two moles of ammonia and one mole of carbon dioxide. The nontoxic urea is excreted by the kidney or secreted with saliva and other digestive fluids for recycling. Ammonia intoxication occurs when more ammonia …

Sulfur And Methionine Supplementation With Urea For Feedlot Cattle, Bryan E. Davidson Mar 1972

Sulfur And Methionine Supplementation With Urea For Feedlot Cattle, Bryan E. Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein is often a limiting nutrient in animal diets. As ruminant animals have the ability to convert large quantities of nonprotein nitrogen to protein, the cost of protein supplementation can be greatly reduced by substituting cheaper nonprotein nitrogen compounds in protein supplements for certain amounts of preformed protein. This process is mediated through rumen microorganisms and, to date, urea has been the most widely used nonprotein nitrogen compound in ruminant diets. Efficiency of urea utilization may be affected by several factors. Among these are level and source of energy, level and source of protein and percent urea in the total …

Operation Of Induction Motor Open-Delta Transformer Banks, Gautam C. Das Mar 1972

Operation Of Induction Motor Open-Delta Transformer Banks, Gautam C. Das

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Induction motors and transformers are among the earliest electrical equipment to be manufactured. The squirrel-cage induction motor has been studied very widely from the time of Tesla and Ferraris in 1889. The operation of a squirrel-cage induction motor with an unbalanced supply voltage has also been studied in great detail. Yet there is little mention of an induction motor operating on an open-delta or vee-connected transformer bank in textbooks. The open-delta transformer connection is the equivalent of the delta-delta connection with one transformer removed. The vee-connection is equivalent to a star-delta connection with one transformer removed; the primary neutral must …

The Relationship Of Jump Shooting Ability In Basketball To Selected Measurable Traits, Donald F. Dahl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The game of basketball has undergone changes over the years and today it is a fast-moving game wherein all of the players have an opportunity to score. The very nature of the game indicates that accurate shooting is essential to the final outcome. Sharmin stated the obvious, that in basketball, the team which wins scores more points than its opponent, and “Accurate shooting is the backbone of the game." This idea is supported by Benington and Newall who stated that "The skill of shooting has probably developed more than any other aspect of the game of basketball." Part of the …

The Physiological Effects Of A Season Of Intercollegiate Wrestling On Selected Fitness Measures, Charley Eugene Corle Mar 1972

The Physiological Effects Of A Season Of Intercollegiate Wrestling On Selected Fitness Measures, Charley Eugene Corle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Koll states that the purpose of weight reduction 'in wrestling is to make an individual a more efficient and effective competitor so that he can wrestle in a lower weight class. However, the author also states that it is essential the wrestler be at a weight at which he feels strong and his body can function at its greatest potential. A wrestler should "cut" to gain efficiency but should not try to make a predetermined weight without consideration of his ability to function at that weight. Because the process of weight reduction is an integral part of wrestling and because …
