Manganese-Iron Relationships Influencing Certain Blood Parameters And Organogenesis In Pregnant And Fetal Rabbits, Gerald R. Cizadlo Mar 1972

Manganese-Iron Relationships Influencing Certain Blood Parameters And Organogenesis In Pregnant And Fetal Rabbits, Gerald R. Cizadlo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of studying manganese involves its essentiality as a nutrient and its antagonism and interrelations with other essential dietary components. Manganese was first shown to be essentia1 for plant growth by McHargue. Weinberg found that bacteria require manganese for growth, for culture longevity, and to synthesize antibiotics, bacteriophage, protective antigens, several enzymes and endospores. No other metal would satisfy this requirement. Underwood stated that manganese was essential to poultry to prevent perosis and nutritional chondrodystrophy. It was necessary in mammals for normal growth and reproductive function. Specific biochemical roles for manganese have been found. Pyruvate carboxylase activity has been …

A Study Of Underground Cable As Applied To A Single-Phase Circuit And A Paralleled Overhead-Underground Single-Phase Circuit, Eugene A. Christianson Mar 1972

A Study Of Underground Cable As Applied To A Single-Phase Circuit And A Paralleled Overhead-Underground Single-Phase Circuit, Eugene A. Christianson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Growing concern for the preservation of the natural beauty of this country has spurred the development of underground cable. Overhead circuits, which once cluttered the landscape, are being retired and underground circuits are being installed. At new development sites, whether rural or urban, the question of installing underground circuits is being considered. The advantage of added beauty is not the only favorable consideration for underground distribution systems. In the Midwest, the unpredictable weather often becomes a formidable opponent of the electric utility. Since the underground cable is buried in the earth, the hazards of wind, ice, and lightning are either …

Biosynthesis Of Canavanine, Shu-Chiung W. Chen Mar 1972

Biosynthesis Of Canavanine, Shu-Chiung W. Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Jack bean plant is still the main source of canavanine. Kitagawa extracted canavanine from Jack bean with 50% alcohol and treated it with flavianic acid but the %N was lower than the theoretical value for this flavianate. In 1937 Kitagawa and Tsukamoto recommended the destruction of the impurity by digesting the first crude canavanine precipitate with 10% HC 1. They reported that this gave a high purity canavanine flavianate, but they did not give a detailed method nor the yield. In 1935 Gulland and Morris, who also had the same difficulty, suggested the purification of the base liberated from …

The Effects Of Identified Student Characteristics On Their Understanding Of Science, Patricia Mutch Cheeseman Mar 1972

The Effects Of Identified Student Characteristics On Their Understanding Of Science, Patricia Mutch Cheeseman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study-was undertaken to try to identify which factors most influence the process of learning science in an ISCS Year I classroom. Because of the breadth of the subject, it has seemed desirable to limit the factors to be considered to those which could be termed "characteristics" of the students. Therefore, recognizing the fact that characteristics alone cannot present the whole picture, occasional mention will be made of other contributing elements. It should be understood that only the characteristics to be named in a later section were included in the statistical analysis. It was expected that no specific student characteristic …

Grain Sorghum Canopy Temperature As A Function Of Meteorological Conditions, Charles Gregg Carlson Feb 1972

Grain Sorghum Canopy Temperature As A Function Of Meteorological Conditions, Charles Gregg Carlson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

About 70% of the water that falls on the Continental United States is utilized, not as most of us would expect, by drainage into our vast rivers and lakes, but by direct evaporation from our soil surface or by transpiration from plants. It is estimated that three thousand billion gallons of water per day are returned to the atmosphere from the soil and plants in the United States. As weather modification and water management become more practical in the Great Plains Region, it is going to be more and more important and necessary for us to be able to predict …

Chlortetracycline And Sulfamethazine Supplementation For Feedlot Lambs, Floyd Michael Byers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Antibiotic reed supplements have been extensively used in major livestock producing countries tor more than 15 years. In the United States, more than 1.25 million kg are used annually as diet supplements. The wide acceptance of antibiotics by livestock producers has been based on established benefits such as increased growth rate, improved reed conversion, and reduced mortality and morbidity from clinical and subclinical infections. Expenditures for antibiotics used as feed additives totaled $42 million in 1965 while the total spent for feed additives approached $142 million. It is evident that antibiotics make up a large part of the total reed …

Digital Solution Of Power-Flow Problems By Newton's Method Of Using A Hybrid Matrix, Prem K. Bahl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The last decade and a half has witnessed dramatic developments in the application of digital computers for solving power-flow problems. Previously these problems were analyzed on the direct analog computers called a-c calculating boards. With the enormous growth of the interconnected power systems during this period of time, digital computers established a distinct advantage over the analog computers for such reasons as: (a) Their ability to analyze large-size systems (with such features as automatic tap setting, automatic area interchange control, and control of reactive constraints of generators). (b) Elimination of human error in reading data and recording information on the …

Parameters Of The Super-Beta Transistor, Ho-An Au Feb 1972

Parameters Of The Super-Beta Transistor, Ho-An Au

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Transistors with current gains of 1,000 to 10,000 at collector current levels as low as 1 µA can now be made in discrete and in monolithic form. These devices are generally called super-beta or super-gain transistors. It is well-known that a narrow base width results in a high-beta transistor. As the emitter is diffused more deeply into the base, reducing the base width, the current gain will increase. But there is a trade-off between breakdown voltage and current gain. When the emitter is deeply diffused, the depletion region of the collector-base junction may penetrate the base and reach through to …

Builders' Reactions To Changes In Demand : A Theory Of Short Run Fluctuation In Residential Single Family Housing Starts, Douglas Paul Anthony Feb 1972

Builders' Reactions To Changes In Demand : A Theory Of Short Run Fluctuation In Residential Single Family Housing Starts, Douglas Paul Anthony

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One factor which distinguishes the production of non-mobile housing from the production of other consumer goods is the relatively long duration of the production process. A recent study found the median construction period for single family units to be three months, the mean length being 4.3 months. The implication is that, for single family housing, the level of inventory under construction is approximately three to four times the level of monthly starts and completions. If the level of realized sales falls short of the level of sales expected by a builder, it will create undesired increases in the level of …

Analysis Of Selected Knife Fertilizer Applicators For Grassland Improvement, Vincent James Alsaker Feb 1972

Analysis Of Selected Knife Fertilizer Applicators For Grassland Improvement, Vincent James Alsaker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil nutrients need to be replenished from year to year. Nitrogen is a primary structural block in· proteins, chlorophyll, and many other compounds of plant and animal matter. One method of nutrient replenishment is to apply commercial fertilizer. This is especially important for pastures and grassland since very little organic matter is annually returned and mixed into the soil by cultural practices. Anhydrous ammonia, NH3, is one of the common nitrogen carrier fertilizers. Nitrogen fertilizers include anhydrous ammonia, which is handled as a liquid under pressure, liquid solutions, and nitrogen compounds in a granular state. Anhydrous ammonia injected beneath the …

Two hundred twenty young-of-the-year (37-87 mm total length) fed primarily on limnetic cladocerans and copepods. Leptodora and Diaphanosoma comprised 86.5% of the total food volume. Chironomid larvae and pupae made up 5.6% of the total. Other benthic organisms and littoral cladocerans together contributed less than 1%. Stomach contents of 608 subadult and adult black bullhead (143-304 mm total length) indicated significant seasonal vairaiton in diet. Daphnia pulex and chronomid larvae were important food items in winter. Bullheads …

Influence Of Weather On Movement And Habitat Use Of Hen Pheasants During Brood Rearing, James M. Ruth Jan 1972

Influence Of Weather On Movement And Habitat Use Of Hen Pheasants During Brood Rearing, James M. Ruth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pheasants survive in a wide range of yearly weather extremes but can be limited by certain short-term weather factors (Graham and Hosterburg 1948). Study of short-term weather conditions can therefore be important in understanding pheasant survival. Many studies have been done on yearly and seasonal effects of weather on pheasant production and survival. Bemitt and Terril (1940) reported on possible temperature factors in pheasant management in the north central area of the United States. Effects of weather on pheasant reproduction were studied by Buss and Swanson (1950) and Kozieky et al. (1955). MacKullan and Eherhardt (1953) studied the tolerance of …

Sub-Critical Growth Of Cracks Under Longitudinal Shear, Bhubanesh K. Agarwal Jan 1972

Sub-Critical Growth Of Cracks Under Longitudinal Shear, Bhubanesh K. Agarwal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is a formidable task to find exact solutions to elastoplastic problems even for plane strain or plane stress and yet more so for three dimensional problems. Some investigators tried to analyze the problem of growth of the plastic zone from the tips of cracks or notches by introducing certain models such as those of Dugdale, Barenblatt and Wnuk. Dugdale, led by an ingenious intuition, proposed that the plastic deformation at the crack tip is entirely confined to a narrow-tapered zone extending in the crack plane. Barenblatt has introduced a modulus called "cohesive modulus" in order to exp lain the …

Biological Studies Of The Bumblebees Of Eastern South Dakota, Francis Paul Andress Jan 1972

Biological Studies Of The Bumblebees Of Eastern South Dakota, Francis Paul Andress

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most individuals over the age of 10 have had some experience with the large, colorful Hymenoptera known as bumblebees. Because bumblebees are important pollinators of crops, and wild and native flowers both in the United States and foreign countries, many aspects of their life cycle have been studied. Both Nebraska and Wisconsin have research bulletins covering identification, distribution, emergence, and floral hosts of the bumblebees of their respective states. The lack of information about bumblebees in South Dakota initially prompted my studies. My objective became the filling-in of some of the missing pieces in South Dakota's bumblebee puzzle. My study …

One Way Of Stabilizing A Bipedal Walking Machine, Gerald Paul Berger Jan 1972

One Way Of Stabilizing A Bipedal Walking Machine, Gerald Paul Berger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A feedback control system for a bipedal walking machine model given in previous study is presented and analyzed. The bipedal model is first simplified and then equations of motion are derived. Criteria for stability are chosen and different control systems are briefly considered. In the survey of control systems available, it is shown that the sampled-data control system with a large sampling period has some advantages in the practical realization. Such a sampled-data feedback control is analyzed in some detail to determine its control potential. The sampled-data control system analyzed uses a predictive analog control algorithm. The analysis of the …

Gentilesse And Gentility : Moral Criticism In The Novels Of Charles Dickens, Phyllis Anderson Ballata Jan 1972

Gentilesse And Gentility : Moral Criticism In The Novels Of Charles Dickens, Phyllis Anderson Ballata

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been a considerable revival of interest in Dickens in the last thirty years. "As Bernard Darwin said when critical interest in Dickens was just beginning to gain momentum, ‘Mr. Pickwick once took another glass of punch just to see whether there was any orange-peel in it, because orange-peel always disagreed with him; and we can now all read Dickens yet again just to see if we were wrong about him.'" Edmund Wilson's seminal essay “Dickens: The Two Scrooges" appeared first in 1940 and again in The Wound and the Bow in 1947. Humphrey House's valuable Dickens World came …

Electrophilic And Cycloaddition Reactions Of 5-Methylene-2-Norbornene, Tommy Lynn Baruth Jan 1972

Electrophilic And Cycloaddition Reactions Of 5-Methylene-2-Norbornene, Tommy Lynn Baruth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The 5-aethylene-2-norbornene system, which contains two double bonds of unequal energies, appears to be a unique tool which can be used in distinguishing the two types of electrophilic and the two types of cycloaddition reactions. Previous experimental evidence as well as the data presented here show that electrophiles which form bridged, three-membered intermediates in their addition to olefins all attack at the higher energy endocyclic double bond. Electrophiles which are not known to form bridged intermediates attack at the exocyclic double bond. In such cases the energy of the endocyclic homoallylic, non-classical carbonium ion formed may be the most significant …
