A Minimum Problem Connected With Complete Residue Systems In The Eisenstein Integers, David Peter Ochsner Apr 1972

A Minimum Problem Connected With Complete Residue Systems In The Eisenstein Integers, David Peter Ochsner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

History tells us that one of the most interesting topics of mathematics is elementary number theory, the arithmetic Gauss spoke of when he said, “Mathematics is the queen of the sciences and arithmetic the queen of mathematics." We will investigate one conjecture concerning the theory of numbers. Throughout this paper small case Latin letters with the exception of e and i will represent integers where the set of rational integers is denoted by Z. 1he Latin letters e and i respectively represent the base for the natural logarithms and the so-called imaginary unit for the set of complex numbers. An …

Study Of Laminar Heat Transfer In A Cone, Chang-Shieng Philip Hsia Apr 1972

Study Of Laminar Heat Transfer In A Cone, Chang-Shieng Philip Hsia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When a fluid flows through a conduit of different temperature from itself, a heat exchange occurs between them. In studying the heat transfer of the fluid in the conduit we can obtain information about the rate of heat absorption and losses, the temperature distributions, etc. This information is important in design work and to aid in the correct selection of construction and insulation materials. Sometimes the conduit or a section of the conduit is conical, as for example the diffuser in hydro-turbo machines and air compressors, the nozzles of steam or gas turbines, and various heating or exhaust ducts. Usually …

Alternative Methods Of Marketing South Dakota Wheat, William M.A. Murphy Apr 1972

Alternative Methods Of Marketing South Dakota Wheat, William M.A. Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wheat growers like other fanners speculate every time they plant or store a grain crop. Each year foreign demand, legislation, weather and other price influences cause market fluctuations which further aggravate the speculative situation. This problem is common among producers of hard red spring and winter wheat. Historically, farmers have marketed most of their grain during harvest season. The harvest season usually offers the crop year's low price for wheat.1 Despite this, farmers continue to deliver grain at harvest time. One might question; is this the only time to market grain? There was a time when grain buyers in the …

Impulse Voltage Characteristics Of Class 155a °C To 220a °C Solid Insulating Materials, George C. Morfiris Apr 1972

Impulse Voltage Characteristics Of Class 155a °C To 220a °C Solid Insulating Materials, George C. Morfiris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The drastic increase in the ratings of power apparatus in recent years, as a, result of rapidly increased power needs, has brought about dramatic developments in electrical insulation. As voltage and power ratings increased, while size reduction and higher efficiencies were sought, temperatures which insulations must withstand without losing their characteristics also increased. In an effort to produce insulations with higher thermal and electrical properties, insulation manufacturers began producing electrical insulations utilizing synthetic high polymers, phenolic, and other thermosetting resins and silicones. The result has been a series of advanced insulation systems which the has been so rapid that a …

Reinforced holes are also located in the girder web near the interior face of the integral abutment to accommodate shear …

Attitudes Of Registered Nurses In Designated South Dakota Hospitals Toward Aspects Of Terminal Patient Care And Euthanasia, Sharon Ann Hofland Apr 1972

Attitudes Of Registered Nurses In Designated South Dakota Hospitals Toward Aspects Of Terminal Patient Care And Euthanasia, Sharon Ann Hofland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem under investigation in this study is: "What are the attitudes of professional nurses in designated hospitals in South Dakota toward the practice of passive and active euthanasia, and how do these attitudes vary when controlled for selected social and institutional factors?" Research related to this problem is important in that recent permissive legislative action on the abortion issue caught the nursing profession unprepared, and it is presently attempting to establish a position. To avoid a similar situation on the euthanasia issue, data regarding the current attitudes of nurses concerning the preservation of life and the management of the …

A Study Of Ferroresonant Conditions On Distribution Circuits Involving Cable-Connected Power Transformers, Ronald H. Miller Apr 1972

A Study Of Ferroresonant Conditions On Distribution Circuits Involving Cable-Connected Power Transformers, Ronald H. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As far as electric utilities are concerned, ferroresonance is undesirable on distribution or transmission systems because it may result in either transient or sustained over voltages under certain conditions. Lightning arrestor flashover, excessive transformer hum, transformer damage, cable damage, and phase reversals have been attributed to ferroresonance. The probability of ferroresonant conditions resulting in damage to equipment has only relatively recently risen to an appreciable level. The difference lies in the fact that the farroresonant circuit is nonlinear due to the inductive component. This component is a saturable core reactance, which has its impedance value dictated by the saturation characteristic …

Reliability Study Of A Revision Of The Modified Los Angeles Rattler Test Using Class "C" Graded Aggregates, Dallas L. Hofer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Both the producer and the user are concerned with a characteristic of an aggregate that may be best described as "durability." In a broad sense, durability means the ability of the aggregate to remain unchanged over a fairly long period of time in spite of adverse natural processes or forces to which it is subjected. Durability, as it applies to mineral aggregates, means the ability to resist degradation. Erickson has defined degradation as "A breaking down and/or disintegration of particles of sand, gravel, or stone, primarily due to alteration and subsequent decomposition of their mineral components, accelerated by the action …

It is the purpose of this study to demonstrate whether particular microorganisms or their associated enzyme fractions are indeed responsible for the electrical activity observed in a biochemical fuel cell (BFC). The microorganisms and their associated enzyme systems utilized in this study are as follows: 1. Asperqillus niger - glucose oxidase (1.1.3.4 B-D-Glucose: …

Production Of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B In Foods With Varied Environmental Conditions, Robert Jefferey Heidelbauer Apr 1972

Production Of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B In Foods With Varied Environmental Conditions, Robert Jefferey Heidelbauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number one cause of food poisoning is enterotoxin produced by certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Knowledge of the conditions which inhibit enterotoxin production in foods is of great economic importance. Previous research on staphylococcal food poisoning has been concerned with the presence and growth of Staphylococcus aureus in foods. Until recently, little work has been done with detection of the toxin in foods, even though proof of responsibility for the poisoning depends on direct demonstration of enterotoxin in the food. Before research on enterotoxin production could be feasible a rapid method of detection was needed. Early detection techniques involved …

An Investigation Into The Transient Behavior Of Multichannel Queueing Systems, James R. Mccormick Apr 1972

An Investigation Into The Transient Behavior Of Multichannel Queueing Systems, James R. Mccormick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In today's world, the waiting lines or queues formed by people, machines, or other units are common and occur whenever the temporary demand for a service exceeds the capacity to provide it. These values may be the costs associated with idle production equipment and personnel or the lost sales due to unsatisfied customers. If one designs for sufficient facilities so that no queue builds up, then the operation is likely to be uneconomical due to excessive idle time at the service facility. If one designs the facility so that there is never any idle time at the service facility, then …

Effects Of Erythropoietin On Intestinal Iron Absorption In Rabbits, Thomas John Hajek Apr 1972

Effects Of Erythropoietin On Intestinal Iron Absorption In Rabbits, Thomas John Hajek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Erythropoietin ls a mammalian hormone synthesized primarily by renal tissues ln response to tissue hypoxia. the hormone accelerates erythropoiesis, the process of red blood cell (erythrocyte) production, Increasing oxygen transport to tissue cells. Accelerated erythropoiesis implies an increased rate of hemoglobin synthesis and, therefore, an increased demand for iron, which ls an integral part of the hemoglobin molecule. Iron, to meet this requirement, may be obtained by mobilizing storage iron or by enhancing dietary iron absorption. That erythropoiesis promotes increased absorption of dietary iron has been delineated. However, the actual mechanism involved has not been elucidated completely. It has been …

Mechanism And Regulation Of Nitrogen Assimilation In Klebsiella Pneuminiae M5al, Ming- Liang Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pathway of the nitrogen atom after the initial nitrogen fixation reaction has taken place is not known. This study is an attempt to learn something about the enzymes that are involved in amino acid synthesis. The cell has varying demands for the intermediary metabolites of nitrogen, as the processes of protein and other polymer synthesis vary. In addition, the cell is often confronted with changing supplies of nitrogen and energy, as a function of environmental change. Efficient growth depends upon the optimum utilization of metabolites in response to variation in cellular needs. The bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae not only has …

Modified Dugdale Model, Prem Chandra Gupta Apr 1972

Modified Dugdale Model, Prem Chandra Gupta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A precise determination of the influence of plastic yielding on the deformation and failure at a crack tip is needed for accurate predictions of the behavior of cracked bodies under static load large enough to cause fracture, and subcritical repetitive loads which cause fatigue. The catastrophic growth of cracks in plates under monotonically increasing load depends on a number of factors. A general view concerning the behavior of material at the leading edge of a crack is that plastic flow and subsequent fracture of the material is influenced by factors such as strain hardening, strain rate, the state of stress, …

A Comparison Between Selected Weight Training Exercises And Ring Machine Training For The Development Of Iron Cross Strength, Joseph Anthony Leskoske Apr 1972

A Comparison Between Selected Weight Training Exercises And Ring Machine Training For The Development Of Iron Cross Strength, Joseph Anthony Leskoske

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gymnastic rules specify that a routine on the still rings should contain one strength move of at least medium difficulty. The iron cross and any of its variations fulfills this requirement. The investigator believes the iron cross is a "required elective" in any still ring routine whether the competition be regional, national, or international. A study of eighteen state high school gymnastic meets, 1969, 1970, 1971, reveals that all the state champion ring men performed the iron cross. Also, the top six ring men of the NCAA 1970 Championship performed this move. The cross is seemingly an integral move in …
