Chemical Survey Of Selected South Dakota Lake Sediments, Alan Ross Swanson
Chemical Survey Of Selected South Dakota Lake Sediments, Alan Ross Swanson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Available phosphorus, organic carbon, and organic nitrogen were measured in bottom sediments of 16 lakes and ponds in northeast South Dakota. These lakes were glaciated, relatively shallow, and productive. Ranges of the surface sediments were: available phosphorus, 2 to 42 ppm; organic carbon, 0.94 to 5.34 percent; and organic nitrogen, 0.29 to 0.79 percent. Ranges of subsurface sediments were: available phosphorus, 2 to 39 ppm; organic carbon, 0.54 to 6.06 percent; organic nitrogen, 0.19 to 0.88 percent. Concentrations in most lakes varied little from top to bottom. Hard-bottomed lakes generally decreased in nutrient concentrations from sediment surface of subsurface. Lower …

The Effects Of Irrigation Application Depth On Corn Yield And Soil Moisture, Ronald L. Frankenstein
The Effects Of Irrigation Application Depth On Corn Yield And Soil Moisture, Ronald L. Frankenstein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today's technology has done much to decrease irrigation labor demands with higher investments in equipment. A center pivot irrigation machine is an example of an irrigation method that allows control over the amount of' water applied with greatly reduced labor requirements. Irrigation with the center pivot system is often characterized by one to two inch irrigation application depths. These irrigation depths are often used to help avoid deep wheel tracks, to utilize the high initial infiltration rate of soil, and to minimize the variation in soil moisture in the soil profile. The general purpose of this study was to evaluate …

Morphological Abnormalities Of The T¹²/T¹² Preimplantation Mouse Lethal As Revealed By Electron Microscopy, Curtis J. Hesla Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study of spontaneous or induced genetic anomalies has been of considerable benefit to cellular and molecular biology. By observing abnormal developmental processes resulting from genetic mutations, we can come to a better understanding of normal mechanism of gene action. The complex I-locus of autosome IX of the house mouse, Mus musculus, represents an outstanding developmental and genetic system to investigate the control of early mammalian differentiation. This locus, which apparently extends over some length of chromosome IX, appears to participate in functions concerned with early developmental. processes in the embryo. Many lethal, as well as viable all alleles, are …
Ritual Patterns In Shakespeare's Comedies, Margaret M. Eno
Ritual Patterns In Shakespeare's Comedies, Margaret M. Eno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A student of literature becomes aware of an organizing design which unites all satiric, tragic, comic and romantic drama into one total picture. These four types of drama with their distinct moods dovetail into a total tale in much the same way that the four seasons create the overall picture of the year's story. The moods of the four seasons of the year show a close correspondence to the major literary moods. An archetypal study of Comedy is especially rewarding because one may identify within the comic structure aspects of the other types of drama. Included in Comedy are the …
Changes In Physical Fitness Of College Women As A Result Of Selected Conditioning Programs, Kathryn Johanna Hoff
Changes In Physical Fitness Of College Women As A Result Of Selected Conditioning Programs, Kathryn Johanna Hoff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is well known that many American people are physically unfit and that this "unfitness” is due largely to the inactivity of the average American. College women have not been exempt from the trap of physical unfitness as excess fat deposits on the thighs, hips, waist and upper arms seem to be prevalent on the "Average College Miss." Unfortunately, there is no way to lose excess adipose tissue or inches either quickly or easily, even though large sums of money are spent annually on gimmick sand gadgets proposed to accomplish such purposes. Two primary variables that control fat accumulation are …
Physiological Maturity Of Grain Sorghum In South Dakota, Leroy E. Johnke
Physiological Maturity Of Grain Sorghum In South Dakota, Leroy E. Johnke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
South Dakota is located on the northern edge of the grain sorghum belt, a location which presents unique problems to sorghum seed producers in this area. The seed producer must consider many factors when t deciding where to locate a prospective seed field. High on this list of factors are weather risks such as drought, hail, high humidity, low temperature, and frost damage to see. Information on physiological maturity of a crop is very important to a seed producer. A common definition of this term is . . . that point at which maximum dry weight of grain or seed …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera LeCcnte, has caused great economic loss to the com producers of the Midwest. That economic loss is twofold: first, the loss of revenue due to insect damage and second, the cost of control measures. It has been estimated that in South Dakota in 1972, approximately $9,000,000 were lost to the insect. The rootworm complex in South Dakota is composed of the western and northern, D. longicomis, corn rootworms. In later years the western has become the primary pest in the complex. The resistance to chemicals by corn rootworms has compounded the problem of holding …

Research has been focused on how.to make the selection of student assistants a more valid and relevant process. The author assumed that the primary resource in the selection process was the student assistant. This assumption was based upon the fact that the student assistant …
On Acoustic Measurement Of Soil Moisture, Douglas George Knabe
On Acoustic Measurement Of Soil Moisture, Douglas George Knabe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The subject of this thesis is the use of sound transmission parameters as indicators of soil moisture. Sound waves have long been used in subsurface explorations. Shepard (1935) describes a seismic method. At the present time there are several seismic methods in use. In general, measurement is based on the fact that the velocity of shock waves is a function of the density and of other properties of the material through which they travel. A change in the significant properties of the material in the path of the sound waves causes reflections and velocity changes. These changes in the sound …

Soil management becomes increasingly important with the advent of irrigation agriculture in semi-arid regions. The limitations of soils and also water must be recognized or major environmental damage can occur when soils are not managed properly. Soils and water may have limitations so severe that irrigation agriculture is not possible because of the salts or sodium already in the soils or which may be derived from the water used. In South Dakota, large areas of land will require special soil management if proposed irrigation projects are to be succcssfu1. As much as 57% of the land in South Dakota (excluding …
Design And Evaluation Of Air Distribution Systems In Agricultural Tractor Cabs For Summer Environmental Control, Michael Albert Vig
Design And Evaluation Of Air Distribution Systems In Agricultural Tractor Cabs For Summer Environmental Control, Michael Albert Vig
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When agriculture was at the stage of horse drawn implements, man used an umbrella or some other form of sunshade to reduce radiation from the sun. An umbrella sufficed as an attempt at environmental control. Farmers worked long hours and little concern was given to personal comfort. Environmental control measures for farmers improved little with the introduction of the farm tractor. The farmer then moved the umbrella from the horse drawn implement to a mount over the tractor seat. Later tractors were developed with windshields or simply windbreaks. These offered protection only when going against the wind and dust. For …

The Unsteady Circulation Distribution In Rotors And Its Application To Noise Studies, Assem A. Fathy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A new method for the calculation of the unsteady circulation distribution in axial flow compressors was developed. The classical assumption of representing the rotor by a two-dimensional infinite cascade was eliminated. Instead the more realistic case of a radial cascade with blades of finite length was studied. The blades were assumed to be thin and only slightly cambered. The flow was assumed ·to be incompressible and inviscid and the secondary flow effects were neglected. The velocity induced at an arbitrary point of a reference blade due to the bound vortices on the blade under consideration and the other blades and …

The Forms Of Language In The Plays Of Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, And Harold Pinter, Charles A. Haggerty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Theatre of the Absurd is, to a large degree, a child of its times. Certainly the vision of life's futility is nothing new in literature, but certain features peculiar to our century have heightened our awareness of this futility and deepened our despair. Chief among these features, along with the triumph of the technological society which we have fashioned for ourselves, is the decline 0£ belief in traditional mythologies. "The decline of religion in modern times," William Barrett writes in Irrational Man. "means simply that-religion is no longer the uncontested center and ruler of man's life. Religion is no …
