Personality Survey Of Senior Rotc Cadets At South Dakota State University Preferring Combat Arm Service As Compared To Non-Combat Arm Service, Wayne P. Kubasko
Personality Survey Of Senior Rotc Cadets At South Dakota State University Preferring Combat Arm Service As Compared To Non-Combat Arm Service, Wayne P. Kubasko
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was limited to all senior male ROTC students enrolled at South Dakota State University, Brookings, South Dakota, in the year 1972. Although the branches of the Army were categorized into two groups, combat arms and non-combat arms, the mission of the non-combat arms sometimes relates closely with the combat arms. This is especially evident in the Corps of Engineers and Military Police, both of which may be engaged in combat arm activities, depending on the nature of the situation. With the current post-Vietnam reduction in the size of the U.S. Army, there is an increased emphasis on producing, …

An Evaluation On The Chlorine Contact Tank At The Sioux Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant, Fred J. Klingbeil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, State and Federal governments have developed water pollution control legislation in response to the public's growing concern for conservation of water resources. This legislation has been enacted to obtain the highest water quality that will provide maximum benefit to the people. Water quality standards for the surface waters of South Dakota have been developed based on the beneficial uses of these sur face waters. Included in these standards are bacterial requirements for streams. The establishing of the bacterial standards has increased the need for disinfection processes in wastewater treatment plants. Although several agents may be employed to …
The Competitive One-Act Play Program In South Dakota High Schools, Raymond L. Peterson
The Competitive One-Act Play Program In South Dakota High Schools, Raymond L. Peterson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The task of selecting a one-act play, auditioning student actors for roles, and then directing the production for competitive performance is a challenge which annually confronts high school drama coaches throughout South Dakota. While there are many coaches who accept the challenge of competitive dramatics and continue to meet the challenge, records provided by the South Dakota High School Activities Association indicate that there is a greater number of drama coaches who do not participate in the program. Therefore, this study was conducted as a means of examining the degree and manner of participation in the competitive one-act play program …
Irradiation Damage Of The Developing Chick Embryo, With Special Attention To Growth Reduction, Andrew Lee
Irradiation Damage Of The Developing Chick Embryo, With Special Attention To Growth Reduction, Andrew Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The impact of radiation on man has become increasingly important in recent years. Since humans cannot be used as experimental subjects, the experimental work with radiation must be conducted with other species. The domestic fowl possesses pertinent advantages which make it desirable for studying some of the aspects of radiation. Chicken embryos can readily be irradiated under various conditions. The relatively short life span of the chicken hastens the acquisition of results and therefore more experiments-may be conducted within a given period of time. Each individual has a relatively low value so that animals may be sacrificed without excessive monetary …
Studies On The Influences Of Dietary Carbohydrates, Fats, And Phosphorus On Liver And Body Weight, Dietary Intake, Liver And Serum Cholesterol And Liver Triglyceride In Rats, Eve M. Kuai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to determine the effects on the lipid metabolism of rats mediated by high levels of dietary sucrose or cornstarch and low levels of butter or corn oil, combined with varied amounts of phosphate. The experiments were based on the hypothesis that if large amounts of sugar are present in the diets, the amount of rnetabolically available phosphate could become limiting. If this hypothesis is true, so that greater activity of hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes and relatively less activity of glycolytic pathway could result, increased synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol may occur. This study …
Amino Acid Supplementation Of Opaque-2 Corn For Growing Pigs, Reid V. Merrill
Amino Acid Supplementation Of Opaque-2 Corn For Growing Pigs, Reid V. Merrill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Protein needs and amino acid requirements are of major interest in the swine industry today. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on these subjects and more is sure to follow. Amino acid content and balance are now being recognized as more important factors in swine nutrition than total protein alone. Recently, the development of opaque-2 corn with higher amounts of lysine and tryptophan than normal corn has stimulated interest in its presence in simplified diets to supply the amino acid needs of swine. Performance of pigs fed opaque-2 corn has generally been superior to that of pigs fed …

Time Dependant Fracture Under Cyclic And Impulsive Loading, Anil Kumar Pattanayak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The phenomenon of fracture in solids has intrigued scientists and engineers since almost the early days of the Industrial Revolution in Europe. More and more new facts are coming to light as more and more researchers are engaged in finding out facts about the properties of materials in relation to fracture. After the study of inelastic, and elastic materials, researchers started taking interest in the study of viscoelastic materials. Since this paper mainly deals with viscoelastic materials the discussion and study will be limited to viscoelastic materials only. Maxwell was, probably, among the pioneers in this field and he found …
Some Effects Of Dietary Fats Or Copper On Growth And Lipid Composition Of Turkeys And Rats, Richard A. Nelson
Some Effects Of Dietary Fats Or Copper On Growth And Lipid Composition Of Turkeys And Rats, Richard A. Nelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the past decade there has been a large increase of interest in what causes heart attacks. Heart attacks are claiming the lives of more and more people each year, but the exact cause(s) for this increase have not been found. Some research, however, has shown that high serum cholesterol levels are correlated with arterial plaque formation. Plaque formation has, in turn, been implicated in causing myocardial infarction and reduced blood flow to areas or the heart muscle. This results in ischemia or oxygen deprivation to that area. This condition often results in death of the individual if not …
The Vascular Vegetation Of Northeastern Day County In South Dakota, R. Evelyn Roberts
The Vascular Vegetation Of Northeastern Day County In South Dakota, R. Evelyn Roberts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Northeastern South Dakota has many areas of scenic, historic, and geologic interest. One such region is a high-rising remnant of Pleistocene glaciation. Viewing the area has prompted a variety of responses according to the observer's particular interest. Geologists have labeled the area the Western Lake Section of the Central Lowlands Province. It was the early French fur traders who· gave it the name Coteau des Prairies, or Prairie Hills. Its lakes, kettles, and marshes serve as water banks, stabilizing the area's wildlife production. Wildlife management interests recognized this value, and in recent times have set aside a wildlife refuge and …

Closed Confinement Beef Building Calorimetry And Influences Of The Manure Storage Tank, Paul G. Remmele
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The need for improved facilities for beef production is emphasized by the fact that human beef consumption in the United States increased by approximately 56 percent in the 1950's and 1960's. In 1949, approximately 73 pounds of beef and veal per person were consumed, and in 1969, approximately 114 pounds per person were consumed. Demand will keep increasing as people consume more beef and as the population grows. From an economic standpoint, beef is South Dakota's single most important agricultural product with sales producing approximately half of South Dakota's cash receipts from farm marketing. Nationally, South Dakota ranked sixth in …
History Of Rapid City Community Theatre From 1943 To 1973, Richard C. Sethney
History Of Rapid City Community Theatre From 1943 To 1973, Richard C. Sethney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The reasons for the appearance of community theatre in Rapid City may be many and varied. However, it may be significant to note that although two colleges exist--National College of Business and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology--it was only recently that the School of Mines produced plays and then on a somewhat limited basis. It should also be pointed out that the size of the community, second largest in the state, and the geographic location of the community--removed from large metropolitan cities with resident theatre companies--may also be significant instigative factors. Ellsworth Air Force Base is located approximately …

Feminism And Louisa May Alcott's Stories For Girls, Vivian E. Sarsam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
By chance Louisa May Alcott grew up prepared to face life more independently than most nineteenth century women. She became a career woman when most daughters· of respectable families felt it their duty only to marry and care for their families. Even before the success of Little Women, when independence was a difficult course to pursue, Alcott was single-minded concerning her goals in life. She wanted security for her family and independence for herself. After she achieved these goals she used her influence personally and through her books to attempt to widen the sphere of proper activities for the respectable …

The Role Of Western Equine Encephalitis And Saint Louis Encephalitis In Mosquitoes And Animals Of South Dakota, Mark Edward Steichen
The Role Of Western Equine Encephalitis And Saint Louis Encephalitis In Mosquitoes And Animals Of South Dakota, Mark Edward Steichen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The World Health Organization defines an arbovirus as follows. An arbovirus must produce a viremia in one or more vertebra species, multiply in some arthropod that feeds on viremic blood and be transmitted through feeding. Ticks and mosquitoes are the main arthropod vectors that transmit this virus. The fact that the Missouri Basin states have had the post extensive epidemics of western equine encephalitis (WEE) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) in the country makes South Dakota an excellent area for concentrated arbovirus studies. These major environmental changes might alter the biological balance of the complex ecological factors that determine the …
Nucleophilic Substitution At Phosphorus : Phosphorothioates, Yuh-Geng Tsay
Nucleophilic Substitution At Phosphorus : Phosphorothioates, Yuh-Geng Tsay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The stereochemistry of nucleophilic substitutions at phosphorus has been a subject of intense study. Most studies have made use of optically active reactants and products and have been hampered by the ambiguities normally associated with-such systems. In our laboratory, we introduced a new diagnostic tool which enables us to distinguish between possible stereochemical pathways. The tool, 2-substituted- 5-chloromethyl-5-methyl-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinan, allows us to study substitutions at phosphorus without resorting to optically active substrates. The object of our study was to determine the mechanism of nucleophilic substitutions at thiophosphoryl centers. To accomplish this objective, a series of 2-substituted-5-chloromethyl-5-methyl-2- thio-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinans were prepared and employed …

The Influence Of Mixing On Bacterial Activity, Viability, And Settling Characteristics In An Aerated Lagoon Treating Municipal And Industrial Wastes, Arden E. Wallum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years industrial management has become increasingly aware of the advantages of processing agricultural products near the source of supply. The result has been the growth of industry in many smaller communities. This growth has increased the need for expanded waste treatment facilities. A frequently used method of expansion for many communities utilizing stabilization ponds has been the addition of a mechanically aerated lagoon located upstream from the existing ponds. Typical of this pattern, the South Dakota Department of Health recommended expansion of existing stabilization ponds at Volga. Aerated lagoons were selected to accomplish this objective. The existing stabilization …

In Vitro Digestibility Of Diallel And Polycross Progenies Of Intermediate Wheatgrass, Ronald Theodore Thaden
In Vitro Digestibility Of Diallel And Polycross Progenies Of Intermediate Wheatgrass, Ronald Theodore Thaden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous forage plant evaluation by breeders has centered around agronomic factors that determine persistence and forage and seed production with little consideration given to utilization. Forages must be consumed by animals for utilization, so forage quality as it relates to the animal should be an important evaluation factor. Plants and animals function together in determining forage quality. Such plant characters as leafiness, coarseness, height and physiological age are easily observed and deternd.ne quality to a degree. Other components such as digestibility, lignin and protein are just as important, but cannot be determined as easily. Animal acceptance and consumption are also …

A Study Of Energy And Water Transfer In Irrigated And Nonirrigated Sorghum, Loyd Raymond Stone
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Approximately 70% of all precipitation is lost through percolation out of the root zone or by evapotranspiration (evaporation from the soil plus transpiration from plants). Estimation of these water loss processes has generally been on a small scale due to the cost and time required for their measurement. Development of remote thermal scanners has provided a possible means of estimating water loss from surfaces by using the surface temperature. This study was designed (a) to determine water movement patterns in the soil profile and (b) to evaluate the feasibility of using canopy temperatures in estimating evapotranspiration rates from cropped areas. …
