Criteria For Recreation Site Selection On Flood Control Reservoirs-Case Studies, Kenneth B. Mclaughlin May 1973

Criteria For Recreation Site Selection On Flood Control Reservoirs-Case Studies, Kenneth B. Mclaughlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stephen F. Austin State University was awarded a contract in August 1971 to select the 1,200 acres best suited for recreation area development on three proposed flood control reservoirs. At that time, there was no central publication which could be used as a guide for such a project. This thesis was written to help correct this situation. The nine factors that were used in initial site selection are soils, topography, access, wind, vegetation, land ownership, distribution of the sites, bridges and open-water and cove locations. Once the sites were selected, they were evaluated and assigned priorities for development according to …

Dried Whey As An Additive For Alfalfa Haylage And As A Grain Supplement For Dairy Cows, Sitakantha Dash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research was conducted to explore the possibility of utilizing surplus whey in dairy cattle rations. Four experiments determined the influence of whey on preservation, digestibility and feeding value of alfalfa haylage. The last experiment was initiated to evaluate dried whey as a grain supplement. When dried whole whey was added at O, 1, and 10% levels to reconstituted alfalfa haylage (chopped baled hay plus 50% water) and preserved in sealed metal containers, it reduced pH, decreased acetic acid, and increased lactic acid. The general pattern of fermentation was better in whey-treated haylages than in corresponding untreated haylages. An in …

Evaluation Of Bi-Level Drainage Theory With A Viscous-Flow Analog, James Marfred Kienholz Jan 1973

Evaluation Of Bi-Level Drainage Theory With A Viscous-Flow Analog, James Marfred Kienholz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The basic objective in the design of subsurface drainage systems is to determine the most economical placement of drain lines which will enable control of the water t able so that optimum crop growth is permitted. One way this goal can be achieved is to place drain lines at a depth and spacing that will not allow the water table to rise above a given elevation during the growing season . For example, the Bureau of Reclamation, in establishing design criteria for the proposed Oahe Unit irrigation project in central and northeastern South Dakota, stated that the water table should …

Seasonal Movements And Habitat Selection Of Pheasant Cocks In South Dakota, Robert A. Fedeler Jan 1973

Seasonal Movements And Habitat Selection Of Pheasant Cocks In South Dakota, Robert A. Fedeler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Data were gathered on seasonal movements and habitat selection of 30 pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) cocks that were radio-equipped in eastern South Dakota from 1970 to 1972. Pheasant cocks stayed in an area of less than 100 acres from spring through hunting season. In winter, cocks used even smaller areas more intensively. Cocks moved about their home range by shifting their activity center rather than by adjustment in range of daily travel. Adult cocks seemed to have strong site attachments on a year-round basis. Immature cocks were more mobile, especially during the fall prior to hunting season. In spring, adult cocks …

Evaluation Of Cattle Use Of A Deer Winter Range In The Black Hills, David C. Hamm Jan 1973

Evaluation Of Cattle Use Of A Deer Winter Range In The Black Hills, David C. Hamm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cattle use of a deer winter range in the Black Hills was investigated during the summer grazing seasons of 1971-1972. A U.S. Forest Service grazing allotment situated between Mystic and Redfern, South Dakota, was used as the study area. The allotment was divided into five grazing units or pastures managed collectively under a “rest-rotation” system of grazing. Three study sites were selected in each unit of the allotment, and 75 exclosures were erected on each site; a paired-plot method was used to collect data. Indices to use of sites by deer and cattle were obtained by counts of deer pellet …

Partial Characterization Of Animal Growth Inhibitors From Soybeans, Joseph Richard Uckert Jan 1973

Partial Characterization Of Animal Growth Inhibitors From Soybeans, Joseph Richard Uckert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pH 4. 4 supernatant from raw (unheated) soybean meal was separated into 5 fractions on a Sephadex G-25 column in efforts to isolate the animal growth inhibitors present soybeans. Each fraction was added to the diet of growing mice and growth inhibition (GI) activity was determined by comparing their_ growth rates to g1"'owth rates achieved on an autoclaved soybean meal diet. Fractions I and II each contained about 50% of the GI activity, with a trace in fraction III and none in fractions IV and V. Only fraction I contained trypsin inhibitor and caused pancreatic enlargement. Fraction I was …

The Vitamin E Status Of Lactating Dairy Cows After Receiving Stored Feeds For 15 Months, Marc Dellhime Eckhart Jan 1973

The Vitamin E Status Of Lactating Dairy Cows After Receiving Stored Feeds For 15 Months, Marc Dellhime Eckhart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The trend in dairying in recent years has been towards more confinement housing and higher producing animals. Such confinement housing often leads to year-around feeding of stored feeds, such as silage, haylage, and hay with no pasture grazing or feeding of freshly cut forages. Since stored feeds contain substantially less vitamin E than those same forage when freshly cut or grazed, it may be important to re-evaluate the vitamin E status of cows fed stored feeds continuously. The requirement of cattle for vitamin E are largely unknown. The one study involving adult cattle, conducted 25 years ago, found that 1.82 …

Groundwater Quality Variation In The Vicinity Of Dying Terraces Designed To Dispose Of Runoff From A Cattle Feedlot, Thomas Burton Andersen Jan 1973

Groundwater Quality Variation In The Vicinity Of Dying Terraces Designed To Dispose Of Runoff From A Cattle Feedlot, Thomas Burton Andersen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much attention has been focused on protecting surface bodies of water from human and animal sources of pollution. In states similar to South Dakota, animal pollutants, may be potentially a much greater hazard to surface waters than are human sources of pollutants. For the preceding reason much consideration has been directed towards methods to control pollution from animal sources. The cattle feedlot is considered by some as one of the largest reservoirs for contaminants able to reach surface bodies of waters. A feedlot can be generally described as an enclosed area where cattle are concentrated for the purpose of preslaughter …

Political Preference And Economic Rationality: An Interdisciplinary Study On The 1972 Presidential, Roger A. Ferris Jan 1973

Political Preference And Economic Rationality: An Interdisciplinary Study On The 1972 Presidential, Roger A. Ferris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In many ways the election of 1972 was one of the most unusual in American history. Precisely one decade after a bitter resignation from politics, a Republican president, the nominee of a minority party, won reelection with an astonishing 61 percent of the national popular vote. The name of Richard Nixon thus joins those of the winners of comparable landslide victories in the Twentieth Century--Harding in 1920, Hoover in 1928, Roosevelt in 1936, and Johnson in 1964. The electoral victory was perhaps even more astonishing than the popular vote. Mr. Nixon swept 521 of the S38 electoral votes, his opponent, …

Selected Physiological Changes In College Distance Runners As Affected By A Year-Round Competitive, Lyle L. Claussen Jan 1973

Selected Physiological Changes In College Distance Runners As Affected By A Year-Round Competitive, Lyle L. Claussen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of the college athlete has changed considerably over the past ten to fifteen years in that today an individual usually specializes in one sport rather than taking part in two or even three sports during one academic year. Such specialization has improved the quality o£ each sport since competitors engage in off-season training during the school year as well as conditioning programs in the summertime to increase their performing efficiency. Cross-country and the middle distance and distance events of track are three such activities which have full year competitive seasons and which demand the year-round training program. The …

Early in October, it was discovered that the writer's original plan for a thesis was being covered in a dissertation just being completed by a gentleman in California. Miss Anderson urged consideration of a thesis in creative direction since directing was the aim of the writer's college education. The matter was discussed with Dr, Stine who agreed that Becket would be a worthy effort. The proposal was reviewed and accepted by the graduate faculty of the Department of Speech, The unique duo nature of educational theatre is a challenge, Elaborating on the concept, Curtis Canfield says that the college theatre …

Atherosclerosis In Rabbits As Affected By Varying Diet Treatments And D-Thyroxine, Sharon Kay Dinkel Jan 1973

Atherosclerosis In Rabbits As Affected By Varying Diet Treatments And D-Thyroxine, Sharon Kay Dinkel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With atherosclerosis posing such a widespread problem in the world today, there is justification for the vast amount of research completed in an attempt to find solutions to this problem. The risk factors relating to the etiology of atherosclerosis which have been identified include age, sex, race, serum lipids, hypertension, diabetes, inactivity, obesity, and cigarette smoking.1 Although no tall of these factors have been researched extensively, it has been shown that an increase in the concentration of circulating low-density lipoproteins is a critical factor in the cause of atherosclerosis. 2 Extensive study has shown that restriction of the diet, the …

Inheritance Of Protein Content And Rust Resistance And Their Associations With Selected Agronomic Traits In Wheat Crosses Involving Sd69103 (Hand, Ci15921), A Hard Red Winter Wheat, Craig Richard Cowley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1971, 12 selections in the wheat improvement project at the South Dakota Experiment Station were found to have unusually high protein. The selections had been developed through a backcross program using 'Agrus/7*Thatcher' as a donor of rust resistance. The resistance was derived from Agropyron elongatum from which a chromosome had been substituted for 7D in the Agrus genome. Knott had subsequently induced a translocation of the resistance factor to 'Thatcher' in his selection Agrus/7*Thatcher. In South Dakota the resistance was first transferred to 'Nebred' and then in one backcross to 'Hume'. A recent report from the Hard Winter Wheat …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the 1969 growing season an unusual leaf disease developed extensively on spring and winter wheats (Triticum aestivum L.) in experimental plots at Brookings. This disease was characterized by symptoms somewhat similar to those of three common but relatively minor wheat diseases; Septoria leaf blotch, bacterial blight and Helminthosporium leaf spot. Though similar to each, symptoms were not truly typical of any one disease. Symptoms similar to those observed at Brookings had been observed elsewhere in South Dakota prior to 1969. A fungus tentatively identified as Septoria avenae Frank f. sp. triticea Johnson and a bacterium designated as Xanthomonas translucens …

The Effects Of Livestock Waste On Some Soil Strength Characteristics And Selected Tillage Operations, Rodney Joseph Devine Jan 1973

The Effects Of Livestock Waste On Some Soil Strength Characteristics And Selected Tillage Operations, Rodney Joseph Devine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Livestock waste is becoming a problem in the area of pollution. About 2 billion tons of animal waste are produced each year in this country. Many farmyards and feedlots have allowed the waste to be washed into nearby streams, polluting them. Large commercial livestock feeding operations have such a large amount of waste causing pollution that steps have been taken by the government to keep large scale feedlots from becoming pollution hazards. Many of these methods of use and disposal are in the development stage. However, livestock wastes cannot be allowed to accumulate while new methods are being developed. The …

Graphical Comparison Of Theoretical And Actual Settlement For Axially Loaded Piles, William Howard Hagedorn Jan 1973

Graphical Comparison Of Theoretical And Actual Settlement For Axially Loaded Piles, William Howard Hagedorn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A primary purpose of this paper is to determine an adequate approach to the problem of axial load-settlement relationship. This paper will show that without the aid of a computer a load-settlement curve can be closely approximated. Graphical interpretation of settlement versus load has been very limited with an increased use of the computer. The degree of accuracy depends upon the individual using this method and can be compared to an algebraic or a computer solution of load-settlement. In the past, pile design was always a problem of complex equations along with many unknown variables. A solution at that time …

Chaucer And The Church, Michael Haug Jan 1973

Chaucer And The Church, Michael Haug

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A Study of the English Church in the Fourteenth Century reveals a dichotomy: on the one hand we find the sound doctrines of the Church and its faithful followers; on the other, widespread corruption, especially in many members of the religious orders. Although the teachings of the Church were basically sound Christian ethics, many of the religious and common people were alienated from the holy life. They were completely immersed in the mundane society of the day. In the midst of this decadence, many voices were raised against the corruption. Religiously sensitive people tried to pull others toward the ideal. …

Ridge Vent Influence On Airflow Characteristics In A Model Open Front Beef Confinement Building, Donald P. Froehlich Jan 1973

Ridge Vent Influence On Airflow Characteristics In A Model Open Front Beef Confinement Building, Donald P. Froehlich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Continued and increased use of confinement methods for fattening beef cattle in South Dakota _are inevitable for many· reasons: surface runoff from feedlots is practically eliminated, the cost and labor required for bedding are decreased, problems with adverse surface conditions and manure accumulation are reduced, diseases are usually decreased, and national and worldwide demands for red meat are augmenting. When animal densities are increased maximum utilization can be made of the labor saving devices obtainable with increased capitalization. However, as animal densities increase environmental maintenance within a confinement structure becomes an increasingly important design consideration. Therefore, accurate and pertinent information …

The Influence Of Mixing On The Performance Of An Aerated Lagoon Treating Municipal And Industrial Wastes, Gregory G. Huza

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the past decade aerated lagoons have become a popular means of economically treating industrial and municipal wastes. Adoption of the Water Quality Act in 1965, and public opposition to water pollution have forced municipalities and industrial establishments to provide adequate treatment for their waste discharges. Aerated lagoons, when used as preliminary treatment ahead of the stabilization pond system, can provide an adequate and economical means of waste treatment. The rural community of Volga, South Dakota selected an aerated lagoon system to expand its existing stabilizat1on pond treatment system. Volga, South Dakota lies in the east central portion of the …

Attitudes Of Women Toward Career Apparel Uniforms And The Relation To Personality Traits, Mary Ellen Hornstra Jan 1973

Attitudes Of Women Toward Career Apparel Uniforms And The Relation To Personality Traits, Mary Ellen Hornstra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recently there has been a movement toward what Has been termed “corporate itentity”. One means of achieving this identity is by attiring the employee in a uniform mode of dress. Then uniform then becomes a means of identifying an employee with a specific occupation or business enterprise. Research, which has been conducted concerning professional uniforms, has placed little emphasis on determining how the employee themselves felt about wearing a uniform. It has been stated that uniforms are an asset to the business organization itself, but the merits of wearing a uniform must also be evaluated in terms of the employee …
