A Study Of The Relationship Between The Ideological Tendencies Of United States Supreme Court Cases Affecting The Press, 1946-1974, Thomas A. Schwartz
A Study Of The Relationship Between The Ideological Tendencies Of United States Supreme Court Cases Affecting The Press, 1946-1974, Thomas A. Schwartz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Analysis of United States Supreme Court decision-making in cases affecting the press is important to communication law because many significant aspects of the court’s political behavior cannot be studied by reading the opinions of the court. The great volume of cases and range of issues simply preclude meaningful analysis except when subjected to the quantitative techniques of data processing and measurement. The hypotheses are: 1. Basic attitudes of Supreme Court justices contribute to their voting behavior. 2. Basic attitudes of Supreme Court justices in civil liberties cases. 3. Basic attitudes of Supreme Court justices toward press issues contribute to their …

Project Remand : Estimating Probability Of Failure To Appear, Glen Arthur Just
Project Remand : Estimating Probability Of Failure To Appear, Glen Arthur Just
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study investigated the following problem: What is the best estimator of failure to appear (FTA) for felons in Ramset County, Minnesota, who are released into the community during their pretrial period? An estimator of FTA and nonFTA probabilities was derived with the aid of stepwise discriminant analysis. The method demonstrates the expost facto ability to correctly place 98 percent of the nonFTA’s and 30 percent of the FTA’s in the 1975 sample. The overall total group placement, due to the large percentage of nonFTA’s in the sample, was approximately 90 percent. Even though it is recognized that multiple regression …
A Microprocessor Controlled Clock System, Joseph P. Clarke
A Microprocessor Controlled Clock System, Joseph P. Clarke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the areas of time keeping and computers have been somewhat independent, there have been exceptions. The commercial time recording clocks have for many years been used of ring bells in schools and factories. An example of this type of system is the simplex control clock designed by International Business Machines in 1949. This type of clock relies on electromechanical logic. With the introduction of low cost digital logic and microprocessors, the designer has been given the opportunity to develop real time control systems and sophisticated digital clocks. The first attempt at this project definition was to develop a digital …

Mercury-Selenium-Arsenic Interrelationships In Broiler-Type Growing Hicks, Jiing-Chnan Chern
Mercury-Selenium-Arsenic Interrelationships In Broiler-Type Growing Hicks, Jiing-Chnan Chern
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mercury contamination of many marine coastal environments and some inland waters has resulted from discharger of mercury contained in industrial waters. In addition, the extensive use of mercury compounds as agricultural seed dressings, fungicides in paints, a slimicide in paper and pulp manufacturing and other uses have added to the environmental mercury burden. Even though a ban on the discharge of mercury is in effect, and agricultural and domestic uses of mercury have been greatly restricted, the problem continues. It has been estimated that it may be hundreds of years before the Great Lakes, contaminated by mercury from the chlorine-caustic …
The Relationship Between Soil Test And Small Grain Response To P Fertilization In South Dakota Field Experiments, Paul Elias Fixen
The Relationship Between Soil Test And Small Grain Response To P Fertilization In South Dakota Field Experiments, Paul Elias Fixen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Phosphorus is one of the two most limiting nutrients to crop production in South Dakota. Because of this fact, many recommendations for P fertilizer are made each day by the South Dakota State University Soil Test Lab. Nearly 65,000 tons of available O are marketed each year in South Dakota as commercial fertilizer. This amounts to over 18 million dollars or expense for South Dakota farmers. Therefore, it becomes essential that recommendations for phosphorus fertilizer be as accurate as our knowledge of the soil-plant system allows. Those recommendations are currently based on the results of the Modified Bray 1, 1:7 …

The Investigation Of Several Species Of Bacillus To Determine Their Potential As Biocontrol Organisms On Wheat, Venance H. Lengkeek
The Investigation Of Several Species Of Bacillus To Determine Their Potential As Biocontrol Organisms On Wheat, Venance H. Lengkeek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Of twenty Bacillus species tested, only five were capable of I vitro inhibition of several wheat pathogens. The mode of inhibition of these five Bacillus species was due to the production of an extra cellular peptide antibiotic which caused disruption of the plasma membrane. Various other physical and chemical characteristics of the antibiotics were also investigated. When applied as seed treatments on spring wheat, the five Bacillus species did not produce significant yield differences. Low soil temperatures at spring wheat planting may have been responsible for the failure of response. The five Bacillus species, B. subtilis var. niger (originally received …

Services, Practices, Characteristics And Other Factors Affecting A Farmer's Selection Of A Farm Supply Or Marketing Firm, Karla Jean Nelson Kraner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The difference between success and failure of a business can often be attributed to whether or not the customer is served in the manner he or she wants. Therefore, it is very important for farm supply and marketing firms to know what services, practices and products their customers want and to do all within reason to serve those needs. Sometimes distinctions must be made between customer wants and customer needs and sometimes it is not reasonable to try to serve every nee, but most of a customer’s needs must be met or he or she will shop elsewhere. This is …
Design And Testing Of A Solar Energy-Intensifier For Drying Shelled Corn, Steven E. Saienga
Design And Testing Of A Solar Energy-Intensifier For Drying Shelled Corn, Steven E. Saienga
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Agricultural crop drying provides numerous applications where low to moderate temperature rises can provide a large percentage of the grain drying requirements. The application of solar energy to grain drying depends on the capability of the solar energy system to provide temperature rises and enough heat to increase the rate at which moisture is removed from the wet grain. Current investigations of solar energy utilization for agricultural applications include many variations of solar collectors and solar concentrators. However, data available on the use of solar concentrators for specific agricultural applications in most climatic areas are limited. Because of the great …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In order to comply with the federal Water Pollution Control act Amendments of 1972, many small communities in South Dakota are faced with the probability of having to update the quality of wastewater that is being discharged. Many of these communities presently use low-cost lagoons or stabilization ponds that provide various degrees of wastewater treatment. With lack of trained personnel for routine operation and maintenance and the inherent financial problems due to a limited tax base, small communities have a definite need for a simple and inexpensive form of wastewater treatment that ill upgrade effluents from stabilization ponds to meet …
Solar Energy For Supplemental Heating Of Livestock Buildings, David P. Yexley
Solar Energy For Supplemental Heating Of Livestock Buildings, David P. Yexley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The cost of energy spans a wide range at various geographic locations, Solar energy has not generally been competitive with other energy sources because of high initial capital costs per unit of energy return for most collector systems. These costs must be justified so that the benefits of the virtually free primary fuel source can become economically attractive. Therefore the objectives of this study were established as follows: 1. Design and compare the efficiencies and total energy supplied by three types of low cost, low temperature rise bare plate solar collectors. 2. Evaluate the performance of solar collectors that can …
Dick And Jane Grow Up : Trends In Fiction For Young Adults, Nancy Veglahn
Dick And Jane Grow Up : Trends In Fiction For Young Adults, Nancy Veglahn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The YA novel may be defined, then, as a work of fiction intended and published especially for readers between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. The distinction is to some degree an artificial one created by the realities of publishing. If a book is purchased by the juvenile division of a publishing company, it is presented as a YA novel. The same book might conceivably have been bought and published by the adult division of the same company, in which case it would be considered an adult book. There is some crossing back and forth across these artificial barriers. YA …

Control Of Phomopsis Blight Of Eastern Redcedar With Benomyl, Douglas J. Fiedler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Control of Phomopsis blight (P. juniperovora) of eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) with benomyl was investigated using potted seedlings in a greenhouse. Benomyl sprays and drenches did not prevent infection. However, three pre-inoculation foliar sprays (600 ppm a.i.) applied at weekly intervals followed by three post-inoculation sprays gave significant control of disease progression. Benomyl drenches of 0, 6.5, 13, 40, 80, 160, 320 and 640 mg/liter pot resulted in significant blight control with the 40 to 640 mg treatments. Thin layer chromatography coupled with Penicillium bioassay determined that 3 μg of benomyl (MBC)/g plant tissue (fresh weight) was the minimal concentration …
Inheritance Of Regrowth And Other Characters In Smooth Bromegrass, Geprge Lance Holborn
Inheritance Of Regrowth And Other Characters In Smooth Bromegrass, Geprge Lance Holborn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Land utilization is becoming increasingly important; farmers and ranchers are continually striving to produce more from production sites and to realize some production from their presently non-productive areas. Progress in this direction must be forthcoming in all areas of agriculture. In the case of cool-season grass species, growth takes place in the spring and fall of the year. With the exceptions of the cool-season grass species, orchardgrass, Dactylis glomerata L., little if any mid-summer growth is produced. Orchardgrass, however, is not winter-hardy or very productive under dryland conditions in South Dakota. Currently, there are no cool-season grass varieties recommended to …
