A nutrition survey was conducted in which the diets of 79 pregnant Sioux Indian women living on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota were evaluated. A 24-hour recall was used and background information was collected by the researcher at Public Health Service prenatal clinics. The dietary intakes were evaluated according to Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). Diets were considered to be good if they provided all nutrients (protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and ascorbic acid) and energy at or above recommended levels, and poor if they provided one or more nutrients below two-thirds the RDA. In accordance …

Nucleophilic Substitution At Phosphorus In Six-Membered Ring Phosphate Esters, Mike Bauman Jan 1978

Nucleophilic Substitution At Phosphorus In Six-Membered Ring Phosphate Esters, Mike Bauman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From these results the following conclusions may be drawn: 1. The stereochemistry of nucleophilic substitution at phosphorus is influenced by the basicity of the leaving group with the more basic leaving group favoring retention. 2. Lithium ion diverts the reaction to retention by forming an intimate ion-pair with the nucleophile which then attacks phosphorus. This associated ion is less reactive than the unassociated nucleophile. 3. For the retention mechanism the leaving group participates in the rate determining step. 4. The mechanism for retention entails a more sterically unfavorable configuration than for inversion.

Dietary Intake And Influence Of Nutrition Education For Selected Elderly In The Congregate Meals Program, Grace E. Anderson Jan 1978

Dietary Intake And Influence Of Nutrition Education For Selected Elderly In The Congregate Meals Program, Grace E. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nationally, the elderly know fewer facts about nutrition as compared to younger people (41). Senior citizens have relatively poor diets and many are at nutritional risk. The Congregate Meals Program (CMP) provides one low-cost meal a day, five days a week for participants over 60 years of age and their spouses. The meal is to provide one-third of the RDA for the elderly. Based on these generalities, the questions investigated in three eastern South Dakota nutrition sites, with this research are: 1) What is the contribution of the CMP in the total dietary pattern of participants as recorded on a …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study is to delimit neighborhoods in an urban setting using the ethnic homogeneity of the population as the major criteria. The study will seek to compile data at a very large scale--i.e., city blocks or streets--and present cartographically an accurate delimitation of community and neighborhood. In addition, some analysis of the ethnic homogeneity of such areas will be carried out in order to assess the selective inclination of certain national groups to concentrate spatially. The specific study area is Omaha, Nebraska, in the year, 1880.

Methods Of Analysis Of Yield From Antecedent Winter Water, Charles Gregg Carlson Jan 1978

Methods Of Analysis Of Yield From Antecedent Winter Water, Charles Gregg Carlson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This investigation is an evaluation of methods of analysis of water conserved during off-season periods and evaluation of the effect on the subsequent crop. Energy and water shortages during the midsummer peak irrigation season have forced farmers to consider the possibility of irrigation at times other than peak growth stages as an alternative practice. Dryland farmers are interested in the benefit of water conserving cultural practices such as summer fallow and snow trapping. To evaluate the benefit of these off-season practices, a yield function based upon water availability is necessary. In order to better understand the effects of off-season irrigation …

This phenomenon indicates that a gas has been given off by the yeast. The purpose of this research was to identify the gas and determine how it arises.

Molybdenum(V) Solutions In Hydrobromic Acid, Edwin Charles Perley Jan 1978

Molybdenum(V) Solutions In Hydrobromic Acid, Edwin Charles Perley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interest in the coordination chemistry of molybdenum has increased greatly in recent years because of the discovery that molybdenum plays an active role in several redox enzymes. Model systems have been devised to gain insight into the function of molybdenum in these enzymes. Most model systems are believed to contain an oxomolybdate(V) dimer in equilibrium with a redox active monomer or dimer. A relatively simple system that shows important similarities to model systems is a molybdenum(V) solution in hydrobromic or hydrochloric acid. As in the model systems, these solutions are believed to contain monomers and dimers in equilibrium. The equilibria …
