The Effects Of Aerosolized Lead On The Immune And Hematopoietic Systems, A. Nuri Ozkan
The Effects Of Aerosolized Lead On The Immune And Hematopoietic Systems, A. Nuri Ozkan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The immunological responsiveness of two groups of mice exposed to 2.5 mg/m3 aerosolized Pb(N03)2 either since birth or for 14 days prior to immunization were compared with mice receiving equivalent quantities Pb(N03)2 (125 ~g/mouse/day) by gastric intubation for 1~ days. Each group was immunized at 5 weeks of age with 108 sheep red blood cells to examine both primary and secondary antibody responses. Lead immunotoxicity was evaluated by comparing total and differential leukocyte counts, cellulose acetate electrophoretic serum profiles, phagocytic index, hemolytic complement activity, hemagglutination antibody titers and organ (lung, thymus, spleen, kidney and liver) to body weight ratios. Atomic …
Ghost Towns In South Dakota : A Geographic Perspective, Peggy Ellen Year
Ghost Towns In South Dakota : A Geographic Perspective, Peggy Ellen Year
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study is to investigate and to analyze one particular phenomenon of South Dakota's settlement history, ghost towns, in a geographical context. Specifically, it is to identify and assess in a spatial-temporal framework those factors that have contributed to town abandonment in the state. A comprehensive geographical analysis of community abandonment within South Dakota has never before been attempted. This study represents, therefore, a pioneer effort toward explaining a phenomenon which has affected the pattern of settlement for more than a century. In so doing, it fulfills a vital link in developing a more extensive understanding of …
A History Of The Oldham, South Dakota Socialist Hall From 1913 To 1970, Richard E. Zimmer
A History Of The Oldham, South Dakota Socialist Hall From 1913 To 1970, Richard E. Zimmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There may be many reasons for the appearance of the Socialist Hall in Oldham, South Dakota. Certainly a primary factor for its construction was the controversial Socialist party that formed a local branch in the Oldham area in 1912. It may be of interest to note that the town of Oldham had an opera house operating prior to the Socialist Hal1 and after the new hal1 was constructed, both continued to provide the community with a wide variety of entertainment and community activities. Unfortunately, the lack of information and the limited time and space does not allow the first opera …
Alienation Of Rural Youth In South Dakota, Mohammad S. Zakikhani
Alienation Of Rural Youth In South Dakota, Mohammad S. Zakikhani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are two purposes of this research. The first purpose is to assess the presence of alienation in a sample of rural youth. The second purpose is to assess the relationship between the occurrence of alienation among rural youth and their plans for out- migration. The problem of concern in this project is addressed in terms of three questions. First, are rural youth alienated? Second, if alienation exists among rural youth, who is alienated? Third, if alienation exists among rural youth, does this experience relate to migration plans? Seeman's conceptualization of alienation as powerlessness, normlessness and isolation is applied in …
Movement And Distribution Of Esocids And Forage Fishes In A Power Plant Cooling Reservoir, Douglas T. Henley
Movement And Distribution Of Esocids And Forage Fishes In A Power Plant Cooling Reservoir, Douglas T. Henley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One Muskellunge (Esox masquinongy) and 2 northern pike (E. Lucius) were surgically implanted with untrasonic transmitters and tracked in a South Dakota cooling reservoir from June 1979 to June 1980. The fishes inhabited the intake area of the reservoir during the summer (temperature range, 27.5 – 31.5˚ C) and the discharge area during the winter (temperature range, 4.5 – 31.5˚C). In the spring and fall, the fishes were located throughout the reservoir (temperature range, 12.0 – 28.5˚C). Highest rates of movement for the esocids were recorded during the spring (675 – 1,100 m/day). The lowest rates were recorded during late …
Jackson County, South Dakota : An Area Study, Jeffrey A. Faunce
Jackson County, South Dakota : An Area Study, Jeffrey A. Faunce
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term "Geography" has been burdened with countless definitions throughout the development of the discipline. Quite simply, geography is the study of spatial variations on the surface of the earth. Determining how the surface of the earth is divided, and how these divisions should be studied, involves an important concept in Geography. A constant point of conversation for the evolving geographer is the difference between a region and an area. Jackson County is an extremely interesting part of our country. Throughout its history it has been the recipient of various negative descriptions. The Indians called the area "mako sica" meaning …
The History Of Men's Basketball In The Netherlands, James Dale Woudstra
The History Of Men's Basketball In The Netherlands, James Dale Woudstra
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within a short time after Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in 1891, the game was being accepted as a new sport in many countries. In the nearly 90 years of its existence, it has grown to be one of the most popular and widespread international sports in the world. Basketball clubs, amateur and professional leagues, and interscholastic programs provide ·competition for almost every age level. The Netherlands is a country where basketball got a fairly late start, but it has grown to become a very popular sport. A study of the history of Dutch basketball should provide such a continuous …
Dye Marking Of Antibiotics Used In Treatment Of Mastitis, Nancy Fairbank Novak
Dye Marking Of Antibiotics Used In Treatment Of Mastitis, Nancy Fairbank Novak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The National Mastitis Council, Inc. defines mastitis as the infection of udder tissues (74). Mastitis is the most costly disease affecting dairy cows; many people do not realize the considerable losses due to mastitis (6). A reasonable estimate of the prevalence of mastitis is 50% of cows infected at any time (62); cows in the average herd contract clinical mastitis 1.5 times per year (74). The minimum antibiotic treatments per case of mastitis is two; with approximately 11 million dairy cows in the United States, the annual minimum number of antibiotic treatments is 33 million. In South Dakota, with nearly …

The Effects Of Rancid Milk On Cheddar Cheese, Shane Thomas Mcdonald
The Effects Of Rancid Milk On Cheddar Cheese, Shane Thomas Mcdonald
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the most serious defects .of fluid milk is hydrolytic rancidity. Although not a new problem, recent practices in the dairy industry have increased its incidence. On the farm, the use of pipeline milking and transferring systems, in conjunction with bulk cooling and storage, involves excessive agitation and foaming of the raw milk. Both agitation and foaming enhance the development of rancidity. Additional agitation occurs when milk is pumped into storage silos, and pumped about the plant f or processing. Dairy processing facilities are becoming more centralized. Hence, raw milk must be transported longer distances to the dairy plants. …
Preservative Effects Of Covering And Propionic Acid On Alfalfa Haylage In Bunker Silos, Thomas Jonathan Oelberg
Preservative Effects Of Covering And Propionic Acid On Alfalfa Haylage In Bunker Silos, Thomas Jonathan Oelberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The preservation efficiency of covering alfalfa haylage with black plastic (polyethylene) and/or treating haylage with propionic acid was studied in two trials. Experiment 1 was designed to evaluate the influence of both covering and treatment with propionic acid on haylage chemical composition and heifer growth. In experiment 1, prop ionic acid was administered to the haylage at the chopper at 0.02% of the fresh forage weight. Chemical composition and ensiling temperature of the haylage were monitored and animal growth was measured with 16 Holstein heifers. Covered haylage was superior to treated haylage in quality as measured by chemical analyses and …

This study was designed to examine the news media used by selected subgroups of the college population. The population from which the subjects were chosen for this study included students who were enrolled at South Dakota State University in the fall semester of 1980. The purpose of this study …
Preparation And Spectral Properties Of Substituted Heterocyclobutan-3-Ones, Peter Nickias
Preparation And Spectral Properties Of Substituted Heterocyclobutan-3-Ones, Peter Nickias
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the past decade some new interpretations of orbital interactions in small rings have resulted from the observations of valence shell ionization potentials. These ionization potentials were obtained from a technique known as photoelectron spectroscopy, most often referred to as PES. Photoelectron spectroscopy is the branch of electron spectroscopy in which the ionizing process is brought about by vacuum ultraviolet radiation. It is thus concerned with the ejection of electrons from valence orbitals of molecules. What PES does is measure the binding energies of electrons in a molecule by determining the kinetic energies of these electrons when they are ejected …
