Studies On Perennial Weed Control In South Dakota, Steven Robert Gylling Jan 1985

Studies On Perennial Weed Control In South Dakota, Steven Robert Gylling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies were conducted to measure efficacy and economics of selected herbicide treatments for leafy spurge control in pasture, and to characterize the interaction of ammonium sulfate and glyphosate for quackgrass control. Several treatments resulted in leafy spurge control exceeding 90% in the tested pasture. Mean herbage dry-weight yield in treated plots was 2340 kg/ha, a 67% increase over untreated plots. Forage yields did not significantly differ among treatments controlling 90% or more leafy spurge. Marginal net return over marginal cost from herbicide treatments ranged from $35 to loss of $63/ha. Treatments providing satisfactory leafy spurge control with minimum economic risk …

Response Of Five Spring Wheat Cultivars To Drought, Gregory Keith Hess Jan 1985

Response Of Five Spring Wheat Cultivars To Drought, Gregory Keith Hess

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Response of plants to water stress are numerous and interrelated. Morphological traits and growth patterns have been studied and reviewed extensively. Root growth patterns, leaf area and thickness, presence of cuticle hair and waxes, leaf movement, and wilting are only a few traits studied. Metabolic functions and how water stress affects these processes through stomatal behavior, transpiration rates and carbon dioxide exchange rates have also been reviewed. Plant breeders are continually searching for traits which aid in selecting for high yielding genotypes in any one environment. Moisture is often limiting in South Dakota's environment, leading to relatively low grain yields …

The Social Role Of The Church : Alienation Or Mediation?, John O. Umoh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research has a three-fold purpose: first, to assess the presence, or lack thereof, of alienation in a sample from the rural Farm population; second, to assess the role of the church in helping reduce feelings of alienation; and third, to determine the extent to which church membership and participation enhances personal empowerment and transformative action. The following questions are addressed in the study: 1. Is there evidence of alienation in this rural farm population? 2. If so, who are alienated? 3. Is alienation associated with church membership? 4. Is church membership associated with transformative action? 5. How are alienation …

Efficiency Of Two Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Rodenticides And Their Impacts On Non-Target Bird Species, Anthony Dean Apa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1983 zinc phosphide, strychnine with prebait, and strychnine without prebait were applied to black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies in west-central South Dakota. Short-term (4 days later) and long-term (1 year later) poison efficiency and impact (short-term and long-term) on horned larks (Eromophila alpestrus) and other seed-eating birds of the prairie dog colonies were evaluated. Prairie dog burrow densities ranged from 54-187 burrows/ha with an average burrow density of 114 ±8 (± SE) burrows/ha. Rodenticide short-term control reduced active burrows by 95% with zinc phosphide, 42% with only strychnine, and 78% with prebaited strychnine. More zinc phosphide was consumed …

Colchicine Induction Of Tetraploid Plants From Cultured Bulbscale Discs Of The Easter Lily Lilium Longiflorum Thumb, Omar M. Kafawin Jan 1985

Colchicine Induction Of Tetraploid Plants From Cultured Bulbscale Discs Of The Easter Lily Lilium Longiflorum Thumb, Omar M. Kafawin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The demands for genetic improvement of plants are rising and the methods to propagate superior plants are improving through tissue culture. Lilium species are commercially propagated by scaling. The base of each bulbscale initiates a few bulblets. Recently, slices of bulbscales were successfully cultured in vitro and numerous bulblets were directly initiated from the explants, producing an abundance of plantlets. This practice of in vitro vegetative propagation of Lilium species not only increases efficiency of multiplying plantlets but also facilitates induction of polyploidy. Polyploids are frequently demanded for genetic studies and also for their desirable characteristics. Except for the tiger …

Seasonal Effect Of Large-Scale Gravel Excavation On Ground Water Quality, James R. Rasmussen Jan 1985

Seasonal Effect Of Large-Scale Gravel Excavation On Ground Water Quality, James R. Rasmussen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the highest priority uses of water is, of course, its ingestion to sustain life. It is expected that through conventional water treatment an abundance of drinking water will be produced free from pathogenic organisms, free from scale-forming substances, free from toxic chemicals, free from corrosion and corrosion products and free from aesthetically offensive substances. If these freedoms of water quality can be met at a fraction of the expense of conventional water treatment by using the natural environment, serious attention should be focused accordingly. In eastern South Dakota, particularly the Brookings area of the Big Sioux River Basin, …

Electric Choremaster I : Test Procedures And Results, Bryan P. Thoreson Jan 1985

Electric Choremaster I : Test Procedures And Results, Bryan P. Thoreson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Development of test procedures and the accumulation of test data are essential for the proper design of agricultural electric vehicles (EVs). Electric Choremaster I is a research prototype that applies the advantages of EV technology to farm chore tasks. Design and construction of this tractor were completed in June 1984. Life-cycle economic savings plus demonstrated EV advantages of low noise, absence of noxious fumes and ease of starting were expected to favor EVs for farm chore tasks. Many battery-powered vehicles were in use at the beginning of this century. However, due to their limited range, they were replaced by internal-combustion …

Evaluation Of Yield And Quality Of Cheddar Cheese Manufactured From Milk With Added Whey Protein Concentrate, Kirk Alan Baldwin Jan 1985

Evaluation Of Yield And Quality Of Cheddar Cheese Manufactured From Milk With Added Whey Protein Concentrate, Kirk Alan Baldwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Large quantities of whey are produced as a by-product from the manufacture of cheese or casein. The United States has an annual cheese production of about 2.2 billion kg. The cheese industry has also experienced a steady increase in cheese production of about 6% a year (44). In the process, nearly 18.1 billion kg of whey are produced. Whey was once a discarded product of little value to the cheese producers. With the advent of laws and regulations governing the disposal of whey, whey became a problem that had few solutions. Even today, with the high cost of disposal and …

Identification Of Volatile Compounds Produced By Brevibacterium Linens That Inhibit Molds, Samuel E. Beattie Jan 1985

Identification Of Volatile Compounds Produced By Brevibacterium Linens That Inhibit Molds, Samuel E. Beattie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mold contamination of processed food and its raw ingredients is a major concern in agriculture. Although at one time mold contamination of cheese and other foods was considered to be of little conse9uence, discovery of carcinogenic and/or teratogenic toxins (73) produced by molds commonly associated with food has changed this innocuous and frequent inconvenience into a serious health consideration. The presence of mold on or in cheese is a common occurrence, indeed, many cheeses depend upon molds to provide characteristic cheese flavor and texture. Cheeses such as blue, Roquefort, Camembert, and Brie are ripened under controlled conditions by species of …
