Examining Variables Associated With Age Of First Concern And Diagnosis In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Amy Mathews Creel Aug 2017

Examining Variables Associated With Age Of First Concern And Diagnosis In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Amy Mathews Creel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a disorder that is present during a child’s early developmental ages; affects that child’s ability to communicate and socially interact with others; and involves the presentation of restrictive interests and/or repetitive behaviors. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) symptoms/behaviors are recognized by parents and can be reliably diagnosed at age two but often are not diagnosed until after age four. Delay in diagnosis results in loss of important intervention services that can improve the well-being of children with ASD. This study examined ethnicity, severity of symptoms, and type of symptoms and their effect on the age at …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity Development, Cognitive Complexity, Differentiation Of Self, And Reports Of Racial And Ethnic Microaggressions, Deshae C. Gatti Aug 2017

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity Development, Cognitive Complexity, Differentiation Of Self, And Reports Of Racial And Ethnic Microaggressions, Deshae C. Gatti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although individuals may not engage in racism consciously due to social undesirability, they may have biases that manifest in more subtle and unconscious ways. Research has found that people of color experiencing different racial and ethnic microaggressions in their everyday lives are subject to pervasive and negative impacts on their mental health, though little is known about the influence of one’s ethnic identity formation, affective processes, and cognitive processes. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the degree to which ethnic identity development, cognitive complexity, and differentiation of self were associated reported experiences of microaggressions. The analysis indicated that …

Mapping The Self: Reconciling Identity Through An Expansion Of The American Road Genre, Tinesha K. Mix Aug 2017

Mapping The Self: Reconciling Identity Through An Expansion Of The American Road Genre, Tinesha K. Mix

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the American road genre. I argue that in addition to the automobile and the highway, a discussion of trains, boats, and walkers and their alternative roads must also be included in the genre. Each method of transportation expands the genre by adding new themes and ideas. Hobos and tramps can take to the road in search of community in order to discover more about themselves; some boatmen can use America’s racial history to discover themselves; walkers can go through a state of liminality in order to discover their internal selves. When these travelers complete their journeys, many …

The Application Of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition To Numerically Modeled And Measured Ocean Surface Wave Fields Remotely Sensed By Radar, Andrew Joseph Kammerer Aug 2017

The Application Of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition To Numerically Modeled And Measured Ocean Surface Wave Fields Remotely Sensed By Radar, Andrew Joseph Kammerer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phase-resolved ocean surface wave elevation maps provide important information for many scientific research areas (e.g., rogue waves, wave-current interactions, and wave evolution/growth) as well as for commercial and defense applications (e.g., naval and shipping operations). To produce these maps, measurements in both time and space are necessary. While conventional wave sensing techniques are limited spatially, marine radar has proven to be a complex yet promising remote sensing tool capable of providing both temporal and spatial wave measurements. The radar return from the sea surface is complex because it contains contributions from many sources only part of which provide information about …

The Roles Of Anxious Rearing, Negative Affect, And Effortful Control In A Model Of Risk For Child Perfectionism., Nicholas William Affrunti Aug 2017

The Roles Of Anxious Rearing, Negative Affect, And Effortful Control In A Model Of Risk For Child Perfectionism., Nicholas William Affrunti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our understanding of perfectionism and its developmental trajectory and impact on children has experienced a recent growth. Research has shown that child perfectionism is associated with a number of negative outcomes including anxiety and depressive disorders, hopelessness, poor psychosocial treatment outcomes, and researchers have not found it to be associated with actual achievement. As such, research has begun to examine the developmental risk factors that predict for its development. The current study proposes utilizing a developmental psychopathology approach, one that purports a complex interaction among internal, external, risk and protective processes in the developmental of perfectionism. Specifically, the study examined …

Residuated Maps, The Way-Below Relation, And Contractions On Probabilistic Metric Spaces., M. Ryan Luke Aug 2017

Residuated Maps, The Way-Below Relation, And Contractions On Probabilistic Metric Spaces., M. Ryan Luke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we will examine residuated mappings on a function lattice and how they behave with respect to the way-below relation. In particular, which residuated $\phi$ has the property that $F$ is way-below $\phi(F)$ for $F$ in appropriate sets. We show the way-below relation describes the separation of two functions and how this corresponds to contraction mappings on probabilistic metric spaces. A new definition for contractions is considered using the way-below relation.

The Dlk1-Meg3 Locus In Malignant Cells Of Proposed Primordial Germ Cell Origins., Zachariah Payne Sellers Aug 2017

The Dlk1-Meg3 Locus In Malignant Cells Of Proposed Primordial Germ Cell Origins., Zachariah Payne Sellers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are hypothesized to deposit hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) along their migration route through the embryo during the early stages of embryogenesis. PGCs also undergo global chromatin remodeling, including the erasure and reestablishment of genomic imprints, during this migration. While PGCs do not spontaneously form teratomas, their malignant development into germ cell tumors (GCTs) in vivo is often accompanied by the retention of hypomethylation at the IGF2-H19 imprinting control differentially methylated region (DMR). Previous studies in bimaternal embryos determined that proper genomic imprinting at two paternally imprinted loci was necessary for their growth and development: Igf2-H19 and …

Applications Of Polarized Metallic Nanostructures., Jasmin Beharic Aug 2017

Applications Of Polarized Metallic Nanostructures., Jasmin Beharic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gold nanostructures exhibit technologically useful properties when they are polarized in an electric field. In two projects we explore instances where the polarized metal can be used in real world applications. The first project involves gold nanoparticles (GNP) for use in light actuated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) applications. Although the GNPs were originally designed for volumetric heating in biomedical applications, we treat them as a thin film coating, opening the door for these particles to be used in MEMS applications. This work characterizes the thermal properties of gold nanoparticles on surfaces for spatially-targeted thermal actuation in MEMS systems. The second project …

Self-Forgiveness In Japanese Adolescents., Tetsuo "Ted" Sato Aug 2017

Self-Forgiveness In Japanese Adolescents., Tetsuo "Ted" Sato

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The literature of forgiveness has been proliferated the last two decades (Davis et al., 2015b), but it has primarily focused on forgiveness of others and the research of self-forgiveness has just increased in recent years (Worthington & Langberg, 2012). Woodyatt and Wenzel (2013a) proposed a process-oriented approach of self-forgiveness while considering three possible responses to the self (i.e., genuine self-forgiveness, pseudo self-forgiveness, and self-punitiveness) after interpersonally offending others. Self-forgiveness among children and adolescents and in Japanese culture was discussed. The association of self-forgiveness to depressive and anxiety symptoms, and culturally and developmentally unique factors (i.e., fear of negative evaluation and …

The Relationship Between Trauma And Health-Related Quality Of Life In Lung Cancer Patients : The Potential Protective Role Of Mindfulness., Rene Bayley-Veloso Aug 2017

The Relationship Between Trauma And Health-Related Quality Of Life In Lung Cancer Patients : The Potential Protective Role Of Mindfulness., Rene Bayley-Veloso

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lung cancer is the most common malignant disease worldwide, and the rapid decline in functioning due to the often-later stage diagnosis can strongly impact a patient’s health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Palliative care, with the aim of improving later-stage HRQOL, is often a main goal of treatment. Compared to other cancer types, patients with lung cancer experience the greatest amount of psychological distress during and after treatment. Prior trauma exposure, and the potentially traumatic nature of the cancer experience, can further complicate HRQOL. Mindfulness, an innate or acquired capacity for sustaining attention in the present moment with qualities of self-warmth …

Regulation Of Haplid Phenotypes In Ustilago Maydis By Ammonium Transporters And Components Of The B Mating Locus., Rena Margaret Wallen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fungi that can switch from budding to a filamentous infectious state have evolved mating type loci. Ustilago maydis, the maize pathogen, must mate with compatible partners possessing different alleles at two mating type loci for successful host infection. The a locus encodes pheromones and receptors, while the b locus encodes subunits of a heterodimeric transcription factor that regulates expression of virulence genes. Mating is triggered by environmental signals, including nutrient deprivation. My goal was to determine the fate of nitrogen starved haploid cells without a compatible mating partner. On solid low ammonium media, wild-type U. maydis filaments. I examined …

Interaction Style Of Mothers Of Young Children With Williams Syndrome And Relations With Child Expressive Vocabulary., Danielle R. Henderson Aug 2017

Interaction Style Of Mothers Of Young Children With Williams Syndrome And Relations With Child Expressive Vocabulary., Danielle R. Henderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Children of a given age vary widely in their expressive vocabulary abilities. One factor that is related to child expressive vocabulary ability is the style in which the mother interacts with her child. Studies that have considered this relation for either typically-developing (TD) children or children with developmental or intellectual disability (DD/ID) (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, fragile X syndrome) have shown that children whose mothers have a more sensitive/responsive interaction style have significantly larger expressive vocabularies than do children whose parents have a less sensitive/responsive style (e.g., Baker et al., 2010; Belsky et al., 2007; Brady et al., 2014; NICHD …

Mechanism Investigation Of Pseudouridine Synthases Trub And Rlua With Rna Containing 5-Fluorouridine And 4-Thiouridine., Uyen T. Duong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pseudouridine synthases (Ψ synthases) are the enzymes that catalyze the isomerization of uridine (U) to pseudouridine (Ψ), which is the most prevalent post-transcriptional modification of RNA. The Ψ synthases fall into six different families that share no significant global sequence similarity; however, they all involve a conserved aspartic acid residue which is absolutely essential for activity. Tyrosine is a conserved residue in the active site in five of the six families of Ψ synthases (phenylalanine in the TruD family) and was hypothesized as the general base for the isomerization reaction. To confirm the function of Tyr-96, Y96F RluA was assayed …

Piezoelectric Bistable Buckled Beam Energy Harvester., Brian Edward Allgeier Aug 2017

Piezoelectric Bistable Buckled Beam Energy Harvester., Brian Edward Allgeier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A novel energy harvesting device design is presented to be created via microfabrication techniques. Such devices have countless applications for powering low-current electrical devices, especially wireless sensors or transmitters. This micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) design utilizes the piezoelectric response of a bistable buckled beam to gather electrical energy via ambient vibrations. While many traditional piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEH) consist of simple cantilever beam geometries, this nonlinear design utilizes inertial effects of torsional lever arms to actuate a central buckled beam to snap between its two stable states; such an abrupt strain on the piezoelectric beam potentially produces a significantly increased electrical …

Novel Insight Into The Liver-Lung Axis In Alcohol-Enhanced Acute Lung Injury., Lauren G. Poole Aug 2017

Novel Insight Into The Liver-Lung Axis In Alcohol-Enhanced Acute Lung Injury., Lauren G. Poole

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background. Individuals who chronically abuse alcohol are almost 4 times more likely to develop Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), the most severe form of Acute Lung Injury (ALI), but the mechanisms by which alcohol abuse sensitizes the lung to injury are poorly understood. However, the lung appears to share many parallel mechanisms of injury with the liver- a primary target of alcohol abuse. The overarching goal of this dissertation was therefore to expand on established mechanisms of alcohol-induced liver injury to ask innovative questions about mechanisms of alcohol-enhanced acute lung injury, as well as to develop new tools that may …

Characterization Of Filifactor Alocis And Its Immune Evasion Strategies Employed Against Human Neutrophils., Cortney Linn Armstrong Aug 2017

Characterization Of Filifactor Alocis And Its Immune Evasion Strategies Employed Against Human Neutrophils., Cortney Linn Armstrong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Periodontal disease is among the most common of inflammatory conditions and is caused by bacterial and host derived factors. The presence of bacteria drives the recruitment of neutrophils, professional phagocytes, to migrate to specific oral sites where they produce potent antimicrobials to kill their target. However, this inflammation and production of antimicrobials must be strictly regulated to minimize collateral host tissue damage. Human neutrophils recognized the oral pathogen Filifactor alocis through Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and upon binding, activated both p38 MAPK and ERK signaling pathways, known to be involved in neutrophil cell migration and degranulation. F. alocis also stimulated …

Characterizing Reactive Glutamines In Fibrinogen And Elucidating Factor Xiii Substrate Specificity., Kelly Njine Mouapi Aug 2017

Characterizing Reactive Glutamines In Fibrinogen And Elucidating Factor Xiii Substrate Specificity., Kelly Njine Mouapi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fibrinogen is the most abundant protein involved in blood coagulation and has been associated with many pathological implications in cardiovascular disease. At the final stages of blood clot formation, the transglutaminase Factor XIIIa introduces γ-glutamyl-ε-lysinyl covalent bonds between reactive glutamines and lysines in fibrin, which results in a tighter clot network that is resistant to fibrinolysis. Factor XIIIa crosslinks specific reactive glutamines on fibrinogen, selecting more reactive glutamines in the αC region of fibrinogen than any other chain. Although crosslinking pairs in the αC region have been identified, little is known about the extent of crosslinking and the role played …
