Danvers) with the use of various media and the auxin Tordon in an attempt to induce embryo formation in liquid culture. It is generally considered that Haberlandt in 1902, was the first person to introduce plant tissue culture. White (36) does not consider this to be the case, however. According to White, Haberlandt and the investigators that followed him, really cultured organs. He considers tissue …

An Experimental Investigation Into The Effect Of Density Of Ink Film Thickness On Dot Area Changes On An Offset Press, Jon Ralph Braswell Jan 1968

An Experimental Investigation Into The Effect Of Density Of Ink Film Thickness On Dot Area Changes On An Offset Press, Jon Ralph Braswell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the biggest difficulties in the evaluation and control of high quality printed reproductions arises from the fact that no matter how carefully the halftones and tints are made, there is no assurance that their dot areas and densities will be faithfully reproduced on the printed sheet. Image size can be changed in platemaking, contacting or presswork. Assuming that the image or original dot areas get to the press unchanged by intermediate steps, there are still several variables which can affect the image areas on the press. The ink film thickness can either cause slur or spreading of small …

A Historical Analysis And Comparative Classification Of The Use Of Computers In The Typographic Industry, Harvey R. Levenson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although developments of the past several decades confirm a revolutionary expansion of graphic arts technology, the printing industry has traditionally been known for its lack of technological progress. It is frequently stated that printing techniques, until recently, were considered to be approximately 50 years behind other industries with regard to technological advancement. Such conditions were particularly true in the area of typesetting. To witness the unprogressive implements being used, all one had to do was visit a typica1 composing room entangled with the awkward mechanisms of conventional Linotypes, Intertypes, and other similar typesetting devices. Such composing systems are steadily becoming …

South Dakota was the second most rural state in the North Central Region in 1960 with 61 percent of the state’s population living in rural areas. Only North Dakota, with 65 percent rural population, surpassed South Dakota within the North Central Region. Throughout the United States, rural areas have been experiencing a definite loss of people through net out-migration. South Dakota was no exception. Even though the state gained 4 percent in population from 1950 to 1960, there was a total net out-.migration of slightly over 14 percent. There were 121, 736 more births than deaths in South Dakota between …

Viscoelastic Flow Past A Wedge With A Soluble Coating, Franklyn W. Roitsch Jan 1968

Viscoelastic Flow Past A Wedge With A Soluble Coating, Franklyn W. Roitsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to the apparent suppression of turbulent energy dissipation, viscoelastic materials make excellent drag reducing agents. The applications of viscoelastic fluids in this role have been multiplying rapidly since they can be used as drag reducing agents for the transporting and processing of most fluid substances without any ill effects. In the future it may even be possible to reduce the drag on a ship's hull or on a submarine by injecting a water soluble polymer into the boundary layer on the body. Since many of the phenomena exhibited by viscoelastic fluids, such as the swelling of a jet as …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The church has been and still is one of the most important social institutions of our society. Although church membership is growing throughout the nation as a whole, there are areas where the rate of growth is decreasing or where there is a decline in membership. These areas are predominantly rural and are characterized by a decrease in rural population, a high rate of out-migration, and an increase in the size of farms, South Dakota is one of these areas. While the membership of the churches of South Dakota is increasing, this increase is taking place largely in the urban …

An Investigation Of The Employment Of Multiple Objectives In Water Resources Planning, Robert Rehm Werner Jan 1968

An Investigation Of The Employment Of Multiple Objectives In Water Resources Planning, Robert Rehm Werner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A number of objectives in water resources development have been identified historically, but planning practice has adhered most closely to economic efficiency. A question of growing concern is whether or not the conscious inclusion of multiple objectives simultaneously in water resources planning can result in the formulation of plans closer to an optimum in the satisfaction of peoples’ total desires than does a plan which optimizes the objective of economic efficiency or other single objective. The purpose of this study was to determine if the explicit employment of multiple objectives in water resources planning represents a strengthening of capability to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For several years, plants have been screened in the search for compounds that might have a potential use in industry and which presently have no other suitable source (1). During a screening study, Mikolajczak et al. (2) found that crambe (common name for Crambe abyssinica) contained a high percentage of erucic acid. Erucic acid has many potential industrial uses and is currently being obtained from imported rapeseed (J). Because there is presently no suitable domestic source of erucic acid, crambe is a potential new crop for the United States. Field studies of crambe have shown that the seeds tend to …
