Study Of A Variable Feedback Oscillator And Its Use In Automatic Temperature Control, Tien-Chang Hsia Jan 1961

Study Of A Variable Feedback Oscillator And Its Use In Automatic Temperature Control, Tien-Chang Hsia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many methods and devices have been utilized in the automatic control of temperature. However, the accuracy requirement of a temperature controlling device depends upon its use. The purpose of this work was to design a device to obtain accuracy of control to the extent of better than one tenth of a degree centigrade of deviation of the specified temperature. This can be accomplished by using a vacuum tube device. The theoretical analysis of the nonlinear characteristic of the electronic circuit will constitute the main part of the work. The complete control system consisted of a feedback type oscillator, a power …

The Dielectric Properties Of Mixtures Of Organic Compounds And Perfluoropropane, Vei-Shi Chen Ho Jan 1961

The Dielectric Properties Of Mixtures Of Organic Compounds And Perfluoropropane, Vei-Shi Chen Ho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, an attempt was made to understand the type and amounts of metastable intermediates formed when perfluoropropane was placed under electrical stress by adding small amoutns of organic compounds such as thiophene, isopropyl mercaptan, ethyl methyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, carbon disulfide, and nitrobenzene. The sulfur compounds were chose because fluorine was reported to react with thiophene to form sulfur hexafluoride. It was thought that if fluorine were formed from perfluorocarbons in the corona, it might be advantageous to remove this metastable species. Nitrobenzene was used because of its known free radical inhibitor characteristic in polymerization reactions. The hope …

The Design And Development Of An Automatic Guiding System For A Tractor, Ali A. Hamidi Jan 1961

The Design And Development Of An Automatic Guiding System For A Tractor, Ali A. Hamidi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mechanization and Automation are very fashionable words in present day Agriculture. Both imply a reduction in the amount of human effort necessary to achieve certain ends, and to accept the need for either of them is to assume that it will lead to some financial gain. Automation as applied to Agriculture is to improve many limited factors which affect the final yield of any agricultural crop. One of these factors, the mechanical operation, requires considerable care and attention to more nearly insure maximum yield and high quality. Numerous methods have been adopted through research and development to minimize field losses …

An Amplitude Modulated Radio Telemetry System For The Measurement Of Physiological Temperatures And A Revised Analysis Of R-C Phase-Shift Transistor Oscillators, Carl Jerl Furchner Jan 1961

An Amplitude Modulated Radio Telemetry System For The Measurement Of Physiological Temperatures And A Revised Analysis Of R-C Phase-Shift Transistor Oscillators, Carl Jerl Furchner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, electronic instrumentation has been employed as a means of measuring physiological phenomena. One use of this instrumentation is the location of small radio transmitters within animals. The most common method of transmitting temperature data is by varying the carrier frequency of a small temperature sensitive oscillator located within the animal and recording the change of this frequency at the receiver; however, this system has some disadvantages. Reduction of these problems was believed to be possible by developing an amplitude modulated transmitting unit in which a temperature controlled audio oscillator would be used to amplitude modulate the carrier …

Preliminary Results On The Hooded Ogee Pipe Drop Spillway, Donald Mervin Edwards Jan 1961

Preliminary Results On The Hooded Ogee Pipe Drop Spillway, Donald Mervin Edwards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The farm pond has come into popular use in the past few years as an inexpensive source of water for livestock, irrigation, and domestic use. With minor design modifications, the farm pond can be used as a flood detention structure. Component parts of a farm pond are the storage area, earth damn, grassed emergency flood spillway, and mechanical spillway. The mechanical spillway is probably the most important component part of safeguarding the successful operation of the farm pond due to its primary purpose of carrying low flows of surplus watershed runoff through the earth damn. There are three characteristics that …

A Study Of A Servomechanism System By Analog Simulation, Bong Ho Jan 1961

A Study Of A Servomechanism System By Analog Simulation, Bong Ho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The classical method of analysis of servomechanism systems has long been used. It has the advantage of high accuracy and can give more detailed information; however, most of the engineering problems have increased continually in complexity, because of the rapid growing of scientific advancement. Due to the difficulties faced when applying this method, the use of analog methods to simulate the actual system will prove much more efficient and economical. The prime reason for using analog methods, as stated above, is to reduce the effort in manipulation, so that one can apply his analytical ability to the interpretation of the …

In the sensing and amplifying circuits, tubes such as 5651, 12AX7, and 12AU7 are used. The variation of AC voltage of a generator in a network system, as simulated by a variac on the analyzer, is sensed, after being rectified, by a grid of 12Ax7 while the grid voltage on the other half of the tube is …

The Design, Construction, And Testing Of An Exhaust-Gas Thermoelectric Generator, Vernon D. Pepper Jan 1961

The Design, Construction, And Testing Of An Exhaust-Gas Thermoelectric Generator, Vernon D. Pepper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thermoelectricity is the direct conversion of heat energy to electrical energy, or vice versa. Conventional electrical generating systems convert heat energy by one or more intermediate processes to mechanical energy, which in turn is used to drive a generator. Each intermediate process has an associated energy loss or inefficiency which accumulates until the over-all conversion efficiency may range from less than 1 per cent to about 40 per cent depending on the system used and the amount of energy produced (9)*. It is reasonable to assume that elimination of the intermediate processes by use of thermoelectricity could reduce the heat …

The Design And Construction Of A Radio Telemetry Unit For The Study Of Ruminal Pressures, Ernest L. Rahm Jan 1961

The Design And Construction Of A Radio Telemetry Unit For The Study Of Ruminal Pressures, Ernest L. Rahm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many attempts have been made in the past few years to construct small implantable radio transmitters which can be used to study physiological characteristics of unrestrained animals. The success of these units has increased almost directly with the “state of the art” of transistor circuit design, and considerable heretofore unobtainable data is being collected in this manner. Most of the effort, and success, has been with transmitters for the study of heart rate, core temperature, and alimentary canal pressure. The study of bloat in ruminants is believed to be an application for which the use of such devices would be …

The Technical Abilities And Manipulative Skills Which Should Be Taught In A High School Vocational Agriculture Farm Mechanics Program In South Dakota, Charles O. Stormo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The typical high school vocational agriculture teacher experiences a lack of time necessary to teach all of the technical abilities and manipulative skills that have become a part of the farm mechanics program. He may spend time teaching outdated abilities when his time could be more profitability used in teaching the abilities that are required in modern mechanized farming. Perhaps some time should also be applied to anticipating and developing those abilities required to do jobs which are now commonly referred to specialists but may be required of the student when he becomes established in farming several years hence. An …

A Study Of Current Distribution, Resistance Losses, And Short Circuit Forces In A Transformer With A Low-Voltage Strip Winding, Wayne Edward Knabach

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of this study is to analyze the magnetic forces developed in a transformer using aluminum strip conductor when subjected to a fault at its output terminals. This would be the most severe fault situation possible. Very closely related to this problem is the considered of current distribution and losses in this type of conductor. Whenever current-carrying conductors are located in magnetic fields, forces will be developed which tend to cause movement of the conductors. These forces usually are negligible under normal rated conditions but become most severe under extreme “Short-circuit” conditions. At the present time, this author …

Power Radiation And Dissipation In The Conducting Medium Around A Small Loop Antenna, Chin-Cheng Lin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the nature of the electromagnetic wave transmitted from a loop antenna enclosed by a spherical insulating cavity which is immersed in a conducting medium. The nature of the electromagnetic wave in a conducting medium generated by a loop antenna has been studied. Based on the formulas derived, a low frequency wave suffers less attenuation than a high frequency wave. This effect is very noticeable when the conductivity of the medium is high, such as with sea water. AT low frequencies the power radiation is small compared with the power supplied to the …

Measurement Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Above A Water Table In Situ, Anthony S. Dylla Jan 1960

Measurement Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Above A Water Table In Situ, Anthony S. Dylla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The physical property of soil which enables it to pass or conduct water through its macro-pores is known as its permeability. Permeability should not be confused with infiltration, which is the term for expressing the absorption of water into the soil. The infiltration rate is the rate at which water will enter the soil surface. The rate at which water moves through soil is called the hydraulic conductivity; whereas a measurement of this same rate is used to calculate the permeability. Hydraulic conductivity is most commonly expressed in the units of velocity, whereas permeability is expressed as the square of …
