Soils on the high terraces of the Cheyenne River in Haakon County, South Dakota have long been recognized as important to the agriculture of the area. Data from this study as well as Haakon County Extension Service and Soil Conservation Service knowledge of the area will complement the soil survey in progress and provide a broader base of information for the future management of this important agricultural resource. Custer State Park's multiple-use management plan stresses compromise among resource users. The objective of integration of forest, wildlife and recreational resource management is to provide maximum benefits to all sectors of the management plan. Forest management techniques have a marked influence on the unique wildlife populations of Custer State Park. To provide input for individuals making integrated management decisions, an approach was taken to combine forest stand and soil survey information, to assess understory herbage production for deer and elk grazing. The stable fly is usually the only biting, blood-sucking fly breeding in appreciable numbers in and around confined animal facilities. An average number of 50 flies per animal can reduce the weight gains of calves on a growing ration by 0.9 kilogram per day. At present, the level of 5 stable flies per front leg of confined beef cattle is used as an indicator of the economic threshold when control measures must be instituted. Anaerobic digestion is a method of sludge stabilization commonly used by municipalities on wastewater sludges. The process takes place in a-sealed vessel in the absence of free molecular oxygen and biologically converts a portion of the organic material to primarily methane and carbon dioxide gas. The methane, which is the major component of natural gas, may be used as a source of energy for the treatment plant. The wastewater treatment facility utilized in this study was located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The shorebirds, Order Charadriiformes, are very important organisms as they make up a great proportion of the summer biomass in arctic regions. Spring migration routes of many species of shorebirds carry them through eastern South Dakota where· lakeshores and temporary ponds are crucial stopover points. At these stopover points, the birds feed on various organisms which will supply them with the energy needed for completion of migration and for breeding. An Economic Analysis Of Alternative Farming Systems In Northeastern South Dakota, Mark Gene Leddy

This thesis research focused on the economic viability of alternative farming systems which forego chemical inputs and emphasize crop rotations and legumes. The alternative farming systems were found to have distinctly lower direct cash costs of production. However, in one set of comparisons, these lower direct cash costs were not enough to offset the lower gross income received with the alternative system; thus, this system exhibited the lowest net return over costs. In the other set of comparisons, the lower direct costs were of sufficient magnitude for the alternative system to exhibit the highest net return over costs. Sensitivity analyses …

In the last twenty years a number of membrane separation processes have evolved from laboratory scale, through pilot plant investigation, to full scale production units. One such process, ultrafiltration, has been found particularly useful in the dairy industry. Ultrafiltration uses porous polymeric membranes to separate molecules, principally on the basis of their molecular weight. In milk, fat, protein and associated substances are retained on the membrane. Permeate, which passes through the membrane contains mainly water, lactose and other low molecular weight substances. Chickpeas As A Protein And Energy Supplement For High Producing Dairy Cows, Darryl Lynn Hadsell

Thirty lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned to one of three diets to evaluate chickpeas as a dietary supplement from wk 4 to 16 postpartum. Diets contained chickpeas at 0, 50, and 100 % of the concentrate dry matter in place of corn and soybean meal. Total mixed diets, fed individually, contained concentrate corn silage and alfalfa hay at 52, 32, and 16 % of the dry matter. Milk yield (34.5, 35.1, 35.7 kg/d) was higher for cows fed 100 % chickpeas than 0 % chickpeas. Fat (3.06, 3.09, 3.28 %) was highest for cows fed 100 % chickpeas. Milk …

Corn (Zea mays L. 'Sakata TS60’), grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Merr. 'Sokota 844'], and flax (Linum usitatissimum L. 'Culbert 79') were tested to determine suitability for petri dish bioassays of chlorsulfuron {2-chloro-N-[[ (4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3, 5-triazin-2-yl) amino]carbonyl]benzenesulfonamide}, metsulfuron {2-[[[[ (4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl) amino] carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl-]benzoic acid} and chlorimuron {2-[[ (4-chloro-6-methoxypyrimidine-2-yl) amino carbonyl] aminosulfonyl]benzoic acid, ethyl ester}. Sorghum was not an acceptable bioassay species. Corn had a significant response to all three herbicides. Flax was the best indicator species in both soil types tested. Analyses of a variety of climatic variables generated from 80 years (1901-80) of daily precipitation and temperature data collected by the National Weather Service showed that Nacogdoches is characterized by a humid subtropical climate with an average annual precipitation and temperature of 45.96 inches and 65.5°F, respectively. The summer is warm and dry with mean maximum temperature of 91.6°F while winter is mild with mean minimum temperature of 38°F. There were no statistical differences between mean annual temperature and precipitation on the 1951-80 and 1901-80 periods or between any 2 normal periods. Rain days occurred once in every 4 days …

I experimented with soft-ground etching, hard-ground etching, machine engraving, scraping, burnishing, open bite, sugar lift, aquatint, and with several techniques for color printing. This study investigated a range of motivational variables which might lead individuals to become educational administrators. Identified and reported are those variables which are viewed by teachers who comprised the pool from which most future administrators are drawn. Twenty-seven items were identified and used on an instrument, designed by the writer. The null hypothesis for statistical differences between male and female educators was tested on each of the 27 items at the .05 level of significance, using multivariate analysis of variance and the test of simple main effects.
