Modified Sierpinski Fractal Antenna, Tripti Luintel
Modified Sierpinski Fractal Antenna, Tripti Luintel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fractal antennas have the potential to provide multi-band solution through the property of self similarity that the fractal shape possess. This thesis deals with some modifications of the original Sierpinski fractal patch antenna, providing additional parameters to optimize in order to get the required radiation characteristics. A systematic study of the original Sierpinski monopole was done to gain an insight on the operation and multi-band behavior of the antenna and a similar study was done to find out why the patch version of Sierpinski lacks multi-band behavior. A Sierpinski antenna is designed by merging a grid and the fractal restoring …

Nitrification Investigation And Modeling In The Chloraminated Drinking Water Distribution System, Suibing Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of five papers concerning nitrification in chloraminated drinking water distribution systems in a one and a half year field study. Seven finished waters were produced from different treatment processes and distributed to eighteen pilot distribution systems (PDSs) that were made pipes taken from actual distribution systems. Unlined cast iron (UCI), galvanized steel (G), lined cast iron (LCI), and PVC pipes were used to build the PDSs. All finished waters were stabilized and chloraminated before entering the PDSs. This dissertation consists of five major parts. (1) System variations of nitrates, nitrites, DO, pH, alkalinity, temperature, chloramine residuals and …
Part I: Evaluation Of Russian Synthetic Compounds As A Potential Source Of New Drug Leads Agains Breast And Colon Cancer Part Ii: Isolation Of Beta-Amyrin Formate From Eucalyptus Viminalis Labill And Investigation Of Its Colon Cancer Activity, Mihaela Cohanoschi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although modern medicine made great steps toward curing most diseases considered deadliest, yet cancer remains one of the major public health problems. The first part of this thesis investigates a new source of selective compounds that are potential candidates against cancer. Fifteen Russian compounds were tested in order to establish their efficiency against two types of cancer: human breast SK-Br-3 and colorectal carcinoma HT-29. The bioassay results show that seven of the new synthetic Russian compounds can be considered new drug leads, based upon their low toxicity and efficacy in slowing the growth of human breast cancer and colon cancer …
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 1244 Pilin Glycan: Surface Location And Induction Of Immune Response, Erica Sentgeorge Jewell
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 1244 Pilin Glycan: Surface Location And Induction Of Immune Response, Erica Sentgeorge Jewell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
P. aeruginosa 1244 pilin is covalently modified with a carbohydrate moiety, which is structurally similar to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen repeating unit. Studies were conducted using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with the monoclonal glycan-specific antibody, 11.14, to determine the location of the glycan. It was found that the glycan is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the pilin fiber and not restricted to the tip. The immunogenicity of the pilin glycan was also studied. Rabbits were immunized with pure LPS-free pili to determine if the pili produce anti-LPS antibodies. The serum obtained from the rabbits was …
Modeling Of Membrane Solute Mass Transfer In Ro/Nf Membrane Systems, Yu Zhao
Modeling Of Membrane Solute Mass Transfer In Ro/Nf Membrane Systems, Yu Zhao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Five articles describing the impact of surface characteristics, and development of mass transfer models for diffusion controlled membrane applications are published in this dissertation. Article 1 (Chapter 3) describes the impact of membrane surface characteristics and NOM on membrane performance for varying pretreatment and membranes during a field study. Surface charge, hydrophobicity and roughness varied significantly among the four membranes used in the study. Membrane surface characteristics, NOM and SUVA measurements were used to describe mass transfer in a low pressure RO integrated membrane system. Inorganic and organic solute and water mass transfer coefficients were systematically investigated for dependence on …
Biostability In Drinking Water Distribution Systems Study At Pilot-Scale, Michael Le Puil
Biostability In Drinking Water Distribution Systems Study At Pilot-Scale, Michael Le Puil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biostability and related issues (e.g. nitrification) were investigated for 18 months in 18 pilot distribution systems, under various water quality scenarios. This study specifically investigated the impact of steady-state water changes on HPC levels in chlorinated and chloraminated distribution systems. Chlorination was more effective than chloramination in reducing HPC levels (1-2 log difference). There was a rapid increase in HPC corresponding to the change in steady-state water quality, which was observed in all PDS. Modeling effort demonstrated that HPC levels reached a maximum within five days after water quality change and return to initial level ten days after the change. …
Characterization Of Protein Prenyltransferases And Protein Prenylation In Plasmodium Falciparum, Thiago Gaspar Dasilva
Characterization Of Protein Prenyltransferases And Protein Prenylation In Plasmodium Falciparum, Thiago Gaspar Dasilva
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Malaria kills at least one million people each year, mostly children - a death every 30 seconds. Almost one half of the world population is at risk from malaria. Antimalarial drugs are the only means for the treatment of about 500 million annual global malaria cases. Because of prevalent drug-resistance it is extremely urgent to identify new drug targets. Many proteins involved in eukaryotic signal transduction and cell cycle progression undergo post-translational lipid modification by a prenyl group. Protein prenyltransferases, which catalyze the post-translational prenyl modification, have been established as a target for anticancer therapy. Research done in our laboratory …
Self Designing Pattern Recognition System Employing Multistage Classification, Manal M. Abdelwahab
Self Designing Pattern Recognition System Employing Multistage Classification, Manal M. Abdelwahab
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recently, pattern recognition/classification has received a considerable attention in diverse engineering fields such as biomedical imaging, speaker identification, fingerprint recognition, etc. In most of these applications, it is desirable to maintain the classification accuracy in the presence of corrupted and/or incomplete data. The quality of a given classification technique is measured by the computational complexity, execution time of algorithms, and the number of patterns that can be classified correctly despite any distortion. Some classification techniques that are introduced in the literature are described in Chapter one. In this dissertation, a pattern recognition approach that can be designed to have evolutionary …

Natural Organic Matter : From Contaminant Interactions To Structural Aspects, Gabriela Chilom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Natural organic matter (NOM) is one of the most abundant forms of organic matter on the earth's surface. Because of its agricultural and environmental implications, it is essential to have a basic understanding of the structure and composition of NOM. This dissertation is an attempt to look how the studies of soil / sediment interaction with hydrophobic organic contaminants contribute to understanding the structure of NOM. The potential of polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and its metabolite to form bound residues was quantified. The formation of bound residues by naphthalene and its metabolite, cis-na phthalene-1,2-dihydrodiol, in a sediment, a silty loam soil …

The Regulation Of Git1 Transcription In Response To Nutritional Factors, Wei Cheng
The Regulation Of Git1 Transcription In Response To Nutritional Factors, Wei Cheng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Glycerophosphoinositol is produced through deacylation of the essential phospholipid phosphatidylinositol. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, when inositol is limiting in the extracellular environment, the glycerophosphoinositol can be transported into the cell through the permease encoded by GIT1 . In this study, Northern blotting and GIT1 promoter activity were analyzed to assess the nutritional factors responsible for the regulation of GIT1 transcription. Here, I report that GIT1 transcript levels are greater in cells starved for phosphate, with or without inositol limitation, than in cells only limited for inositol. Ino2p and Ino4p are required for full GIT1 expression when the medium lacks both inositol …
Post-Conciliar Models Of Sin And Reconciliation: Towards A Contemporary Paradigm, James Cross
Post-Conciliar Models Of Sin And Reconciliation: Towards A Contemporary Paradigm, James Cross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The central proposal of this dissertation is that now, in the wake of the Second Vatican Council (1962-5), official Roman Catholic teaching on sin and sacramental reconciliation is not, but ought to be, based upon a contemporary paradigm of sin and reconciliation--i.e. a paradigm which is concordant with, and adequate in light of, the teachings and goals of this Council. According to the author, an existing "liturgical-narrational" model of sin and reconciliation ought to be elevated to the status of such a paradigm or supermodel.
The author arrives at this conclusion after examining two critical post-Conciliar documents--the revised Rite of …
Development Of A Biochemical Probe For Arsenate Respiring Bacteria Using Bacillus Selenitireducens Strain Mls10, Mirunalni Thangavelu
Development Of A Biochemical Probe For Arsenate Respiring Bacteria Using Bacillus Selenitireducens Strain Mls10, Mirunalni Thangavelu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To date, eighteen phylogenetically diverse prokaryotes have been found to utilize arsenic as the terminal electron acceptor in anaerobic respiration, converting arsenate into the more toxic and mobile arsenite. This process can lead to ground water contamination, making it imperative to detect in situ, active arsenate-respiring prokaryotes.
A biochemical probe that targets the catalytic subunit (ArrA) of the respiratory arsenate reductase (Arr) from Bacillus selenitireducens strain MLS10 was developed. Polyclonal antibodies were raised against a fifteen amino acids long highly conserved sequence at the C-terminus of ArrA. Highly specific antibodies obtained by affinity purification using the synthesized ArrA polypeptide, reacted …
Assessment Of Constructs Related To Childhood Aggression, Susan B. Mclaughlin
Assessment Of Constructs Related To Childhood Aggression, Susan B. Mclaughlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study provides empirical support for the comprehensive theoretical model of aggression proposed by Meloy (2001) by examining characteristics of children who have a longstanding history of aggression across home and educational settings. The theoretical model first proposed by Meloy (2001) found attachment, anxiety, and attention difficulties in adults who evidenced severe aggression problems. The current study clarified how the adult model applies to children. That is, this study examined how attachment, anxiety, and attention are related to the overall functioning of children requiring treatment for aggression. Results are discussed in terms of child development issues, treatment selection, and intervention …
