Ecological and trophic distributions of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota were studies. Components of the ecosystem analyzed were water, bottom sediment, zooplankton, benthic algae, crayfish, aquatic insects and fish. Concentrations of aldrin, DDD, DDE, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, methoxychlor, and toxaphene were determined by gas chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. DDT and its metabolites, DDD and DDE, were the highest residues detected in all trophic levels examined. Heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrine, dieldrin, and lindane were present in the majority of sample types, while neither endrin nor methoxyshlor was detected above analytical confidence limits in any …

Vacuum Dewatering Of Elutriated Wastewater Sludge Conditioned With Lime Sludge, Donald Lee Miller Feb 1968

Vacuum Dewatering Of Elutriated Wastewater Sludge Conditioned With Lime Sludge, Donald Lee Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary concerns a community must consider upon adoption of a sludge disposal program is that of operating costs. The operating costs of a vacuum filtration process are relatively high due to the large amounts of chemical coagulants which are generally required to condition the sludge so that it will exhibit its best dewatering characteristics. This project was undertaken to assess the value of lime softening sludge as a conditioning agent for digested sewage sludge preceding vacuum filtration. The sludges studied were obtained from the Sioux Falls Water Treatment Plant and the Sioux Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant. Sioux …

Evaluation Of An Aerated Lagoon System Treating Domestic And Industrial Wastewaters, John Thomas Lowthian Feb 1968

Evaluation Of An Aerated Lagoon System Treating Domestic And Industrial Wastewaters, John Thomas Lowthian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As industrial management becomes increasingly aware of' the advantages of processing agricultural products near the source of supply, the rate of industrial growth in rural areas correspondingly seems to accelerate. Many rural communities have already experienced the impact of industrial expansion. The type of industry which processes agricultural products produces large quantities of polluted water and, thereby, imposes a significant load upon the wastewater treatment facilities. This increased loading alters, to some extent, the ecology within the treatment processes employed. The wastewater treatment facilities used by a high percentage of rural communities consist of stabilization ponds. Some unique problems are …

Synthesis Of Deoxy-Glucosamine As A Possible Antibacterial Agent, Theodore Allen Westley Feb 1968

Synthesis Of Deoxy-Glucosamine As A Possible Antibacterial Agent, Theodore Allen Westley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An antibacterial agent is a substance which destroys or suppresses bacterial growth or reproduction. The discovery of the antibacterial properties of the sulfonamides in 1935 by Gerhard Domagk began one of the brightest eras in modern anti-bacterial chemotherapy. These drugs have remained useful as antibacterial agents but the introduction of the antibiotics, particularly penicillin, has made the sulfonamides less popular. However, the sulfonamides are effective and are still used today. Antibacterial agents are not characterized by one chemical grouping or a particular mode of action. Phenols and alcohols, for example, act by denaturing protein. Others such as arsenic and the …

Drought Resistance Of Ponderosa Pine And Eastern Redcedar On Central South Dakota Soils, Gerald L. Jensen Feb 1968

Drought Resistance Of Ponderosa Pine And Eastern Redcedar On Central South Dakota Soils, Gerald L. Jensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Afforestation of the Missouri River hills along the Great Lakes of South Dakota's reservoirs is a varied problem. Most of the flood plain vegetation, of which Eastern cottonwood, Populus deltoides Bartr is the dominant, has been flooded by the impoundments. The new, shores are mostly grasses of which the potential natural vegetation according to Kuchler (1964) would be in the Agropyron-Stipa association. Hardwood forest, mostly the Ulmus Fraxinus type, exists along tributaries of the Missouri. There are scattered stands of Eastern red cedar, Juniperus virginiana L., on the north facing slopes of the hills. There are several pockets of shrub …

Effects Of Supplemental Lysine In The Drinking Water Of Growing And Finishing Swine, Aaron R. Taylor Jan 1968

Effects Of Supplemental Lysine In The Drinking Water Of Growing And Finishing Swine, Aaron R. Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Proteins are defined as organic compounds formed as polymers of amino acids. The structural characteristics of the individual proteins enable them to act as catalysts (enzymes) and thus control the rate of all biological reactions, to serve as carriers for biologically important substances in the organism, to regulate physiological relationships as hormones, and to serve as structural components for subcellular, cellular and other organic substances. Previous research has indicated that for optimum utilization of amino acids to occur the required amino acids must be present at the site where synthesis of the organic substances takes place. These required amino acids …

Beneficial Effects Of An Intercepting Trench On Degraded Ground Water In The Vicinity Of A Refuse Landfill, William George Hendrickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The concern for ground water contamination resulting from the sanitary landfill method of disposal, the realization that adequate data were lacking, and the availability of a refuse landfill that could be used for obtaining more pertinent data, resulted in several research projects at this university. These included: a study of the effects of the refuse landfill on the quality of the underlying ground water (5) ; a study of the areal extent of the contamination and the variance due to seasonal changes (6); and a study of the effects of the refuse landfill on the subsequential uses of the related …

Aflatoxicosis In Poultry, John G. Gregoriades Jan 1968

Aflatoxicosis In Poultry, John G. Gregoriades

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term "aflatoxicosis" is applied to the toxicosis which is produced by "aflatoxin", a poisonous metabolite produced by certain strains of Aspergillus flavus. This toxin is a part of a series of toxins produced by fungi, which may be ingested by livestock, poultry and humans to produce toxigenic effects--the so-called mycotoxicoses. The occurrence of mycotoxicoses are frequent enough considering the prevalence of fungi and their proliferation in nature. They develop under favorable environmental conditions in foods and feeds of plant origin before and after harvest.

An Evaluation Of The Pre-College Guidance Received By The College Dropout And The College Persister, Douglas John Soule

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The amount of pre-college information that college dropouts received, as compared to college persisters, was the focal point of this study. This factor, along with certain external and internal forces, may determine the extent of college success. The objectives of this investigation have been to determine if there exists differences in the amount of pre-college information college dropouts received as compared to college persisters. Specifically, this investigation will seek answers to the following questions: 1. Is there a difference in the number of visits the dropout and the persister had with his high school counselor? 2. Is there a difference …

Relationships Between Beef Palatability And Bone Density, Bone Hardness And Other Maturity Indicators, David E. Schafer Jan 1968

Relationships Between Beef Palatability And Bone Density, Bone Hardness And Other Maturity Indicators, David E. Schafer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A trend in recent years has been for meat scientists to concentrate much of their effort on obtaining a more complete understanding of those factors which affect or contribute to meat quality or palatability. Some of these topics have ranged from the effect of nutritional regime on palatability to the effects of hormone treatments, antemortem stress conditions, breeds or types, sex, marbling levels, maturity or age, cooking techniques, chemistry of muscle and fat, measurement of muscle fiber diameter and extensibility, connective tissues and, finally, color of muscle and fat. This emphasis on factors relating to beef palatability has also caused …

Feedlot Adaptation And Shrinkage Of Feeder Cattle, Robert E. Revell Jan 1968

Feedlot Adaptation And Shrinkage Of Feeder Cattle, Robert E. Revell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past 10 to 20 years the cattle feeding industry has undergone many changes. A number of changes in environmental factors and management practices have created problems in the adaptation of newly arrived cattle to their new environment. Major problems are the high incidence of diseases resulting in extensive treatments, slow gaining cattle during the early stages in the feedlot, and costly death losses. All result in narrowed profit margins. Cattle are being sent to feedlots at an earlier age. The practice of holding cattle until they are mature or selling them as grass-fats has declined. Feedlot operators want …

Genetic Localization Of Chlorophyll Mutant Genes In Barley, Sheria Chaio Chaio-Tong Chang Jan 1968

Genetic Localization Of Chlorophyll Mutant Genes In Barley, Sheria Chaio Chaio-Tong Chang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chlorophyll deficient mutants have been useful in studying the actions of genes determining the submicroscopic structure of the chloroplast and in analyzing the genetic control of the formation of macromolecular cell structures. Normal chlorophyll development is probably controlled by a large number of genetic factors, most of which are inherited as recessives when mutated. Each of the chlorophyll deficiency phenotypic groups seems to be determined by many genes. The chlorophyll mutations were produced. They could be divided into nine different types (Gustafsson, 1940), according to their appearance at certain stages of development of the plants: albino, xantha, albovridis (alboxantha, xanthalba, …

Tissue Culture Of Carrot Leaf On Three Media Using The Growth Regulator Tordon, John O'Connell Jan 1968

Tissue Culture Of Carrot Leaf On Three Media Using The Growth Regulator Tordon, John O'Connell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of tissue culture has been in existence for several years and it has been carried out in a variety of ways (31). This study was made on the culture of carrot leaves (var. Danvers) with the use of various media and the auxin Tordon in an attempt to induce embryo formation in liquid culture. It is generally considered that Haberlandt in 1902, was the first person to introduce plant tissue culture. White (36) does not consider this to be the case, however. According to White, Haberlandt and the investigators that followed him, really cultured organs. He considers tissue …

The Fish Population Of Lake Poinsett, South Dakota, As Indicated By The Catch, James C. Congdon Jan 1968

The Fish Population Of Lake Poinsett, South Dakota, As Indicated By The Catch, James C. Congdon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gill nets, trap nets, an otter trawl, and a boom-type electric shocker were utilized to obtain samples of the fish population of Lake Poinsett, South Dakota. The species and size composition of the samples differed significantly with time of season, time of day, location on the lake, and type of gear. Decreased activity following spawning was the apparent cause of a midsummer decline in gill net and trap net catches of black bullhead, black crappie, and white crappie. A late summer increase in the catch of yearling black bullheads, crappies, white bass, carp and bigmouth buffalo was attributed to an …

Evaluations Of Techniques For Estimating Fall Age Ratios Of Canada And Snow Geese, Kenneth Frederick Higgins Jan 1968

Evaluations Of Techniques For Estimating Fall Age Ratios Of Canada And Snow Geese, Kenneth Frederick Higgins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Validity of flock counts, average group-size counts, cannot-net catches, and hunter-bag checks for estimating productivity of lesser snow geese (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) and small Canada geese (Branta cnadensis hutchinsii-parvipes complex) was studied at Sand Lake and Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuges during fall, 1965 and 1966. Age-ratios obtained from flock counts vaired with the number of flocks sampled, wind velocity and amount of sky cover. If adequate sampling sites are selected and weather conditions are standardized, age ratio data from flock counts are of value for assessing productivity. Variation in group composition and number contributed to the bias in average group-size …

Life History And Ecology Of The Black-Footed Ferret In The Wild, Conrad N. Hillman Jan 1968

Life History And Ecology Of The Black-Footed Ferret In The Wild, Conrad N. Hillman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Twenty-one black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) were observed at six different locations in southwest South Dakota between April 1966, and September 1967. All observations were made on black-tailed prairie-dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) towns from 15 to 100 acres in size. Because of the proximity of towns inhabited by ferrets, it was possible that individual animals were observed in more than one location. Three litters of ferrets were studied. Young ferrets were most active during early morning and late evening hours. Ferrets remained as a group until early fall when dispersal evidently occurred. Young ferrets accepted live-tethered and dead prairie dogs, mice, cottontails …

Food Habits Of The Sharp-Tailed Grouse (Pedioecetes Phasianellus Jamesi) And The Greater Prairie Chicken (Tymphanuchus Cupido Pinnauts) In Western South Dakota, Bruce A. Renhowe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Summer food preferences were determined for 48 adult sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesi) in a mixed grass habitat. Seasonal foods were determined for 659 sharptails and prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus). Vegetation analysis of four selected study areas indicated significant differences (P<.05) in grassland and brushy draw habitats. Of plant food items, cultivated crops were first in importance on the basis of crop analysis by volumetric comparison for summer, fall, and winter for prairie grouse. Common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) ranked first (72.2 percent) in importance by volume for 63 sharptai8ls during spring. Short-horned grasshoppers (Acrididas) were the most important insect item by volume for summer, fall, and winter. Preference indices for food items taken by 48 adult sharp-tailed grouse during summer indicated selectivity for rose (Rosa arkansana) hips, wolfberry (Symmphoricarpos occidentalis) fruits, clovers (Trifolium spp.), and prickly lettuce (Lactuca Serriola) flower heads. Cultivated crop were fifth in important based on the food-preference index. Short-horned grasshoppers were consumed in approximate proportion to their availability.

Fishes Of The Big Sioux River, James A. Sinning Jan 1968

Fishes Of The Big Sioux River, James A. Sinning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An understanding of the fishes and limnology of a river is essential to the effective management of the river. The climate, soils, and agricultural practices in eastern South Dakota create unusual characteristics in rivers draining that area. One of the principal rivers of the area is the Big Sioux River. Fishes of this river were first studied about 1900 by Meek and by Everman and Cox (Bailey and Allum, 1962). A later survey by Churchill and Over (1933) apparently included the Big Sioux River, but collection data were inadequate for detailed comparisons. Since that time collections of fishes were made …

It is increased in solids content with nonfat milk solids. The purpose· of developing this product was to obtain a new outlet for milk constituents; desirably it was to be one that could regain the market sales which were lost by butter and are now enjoyed by the margarines. The high price of butter compared with the substitute product …

The Feeding Value Of High Dry Matter Corn Silage, Myers J. Owens Jan 1968

The Feeding Value Of High Dry Matter Corn Silage, Myers J. Owens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The important of corn in dairy cattle feeding is generally acknowledged. A popular way of preserving the crop is to make corn silage, thus using the whole plant for feed and preserving maximum feed per acre. The increased utilization of corn silage by dairymen may be due to its high energy yields per acre, high acceptability by cattle, and ease with it is incorporated into automated systems of harvesting and feeding. The increasing importance of corn silage in the United State is evidenced by the increasing acreages harvested as corn silage. In 1950 there were 4,937,000 acres planted with a …

Stabilization Pond Site Evaluation, Terrence Owen Hausken Jan 1968

Stabilization Pond Site Evaluation, Terrence Owen Hausken

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing number of stabilization ponds, it becomes desirable that they be located where they will least affect the present and future uses of water, cause the least amount of nuisances, and be economical with respect to location and construction. These desirable characteristics cannot always be fulfilled and thus a compromise must be made when choosing the site of the pond. At present there is no conventional method for evaluating various site characteristics and construction practices of areas or sites where wastes are released to the ground. Studies have been conducted on various phases or areas relating to stabilization …
